  • As the Greenlandic ice sheet melts, huge deposits of rare earth elements are being uncovered.
    These are vital in the production of low-carbon technologies - such as electric cars and wind turbines.
    But some farmers - worried about radioactive dust and waste water - are trying to block mining projects.
    Al Jazeera’s Nick Clark visited the town of Narsaq in southern Greenland - the site of one proposed mine.

      Do you realize that the entire point of mining rare earth minerals is to manufacture the technology necessary for green energy? You need permanent magnets for the generators in wind turbines, and you need lithium, cobalt, etc for batteries to store the energy

    I hope the locals can keep international corporate mining interests out of their home.

      I hope you like running out of the minerals that make your electronics work because you and they assumed there could be no safe mining operation. Negotiating for better conditions is always an option. The people of Greenland can wait indefinitely for terms they like.

    1:45 Of course he says that. He won't need to face the consequences of mining.
    And the "bring jobs and business oportunities" is such a cheap argument. They are fine like that, no need to increase urbanitzation and destruction of natural habitats.

    • @nathanlevesque7812
      @nathanlevesque7812 2 года назад +1

      Mineral mines are not urbanization...and the mineral deposits buried under ice are not "natural habitats" they are literal deadzones.

      No one gets away and no one is innocent.
      There are no victims.

      It is not exactly as if the US has treated Greenland better, look up Camp Century and Project Iceworm.

      @PalleRasmussen 2 года назад

      @@enriquelopez6692 my thoughts on it is complex. Given the knowledge they had then and general behaviour it was fine. What is not fine is that Denmark now has to foot the bill; if the US had any honour and integrity, they would pony up and pay.
      But they do not, they are but the large schoolyard bully that you are only friends with to be protected from slightly less large schoolyard bullies.

      You sound desperate to contain China's rise, huh? :) Fun fact: CO2 emission PER CAPITA of the WEST is much larger than that of China. And China even yet got industrialized like the West.

    And then they are wanting independence. It’s easy to say you don’t want mining when much of the economy is a financial gift from another country.

    the stuff has to be mined somewhere, and environmental regulations in greenland will be way better than in china or afghanistan. sorry, but these people are just going to have to move (with full compensation of course). there's enough space in greenland.

      People criticize but at the same time they buy new cell phones at Black Friday every single year.
      People just wanna live like kings with only paying a few pennies... That is why this massive mine industry is unstoppable... Because it's people mass consumption that support it.
