    14:48 is THE best line in the movie.
    Your reaction to this movie is completely generational.
    As someone in their 40s, the parents in this movie are the BEST part of this movie. This is one of the better (if not the best) teen Rom-Coms to come out of the 2010s. Yeah, olive acts a lot older than is expected, but wouldn't you with parents like that? The nuance of her family dynamic is what grounds her, and they check in with her all the time in the movie.
    Her favorite teacher is cool, how she mends the relationship with her bff by setting up boundaries works. There are a lot of subtle things in the movie that work outside the slap you in the face premise.

    Olive's parents were honestly my favourite part of this movie. My cousin had me watch it with them and told me about the scene in the kitchen, when the little brother says he's adopted, and the parent's response to it. I was immediately intrigued to watch, and that scene was preformed beautifully. It was so nice and refreshing to have likeable and understanding parents in this. Like, regardless of what people might say about their kids, they know their kids well enough to be able to tell if it's the truth or not. And that was nice to see.

    I still find this movie hilarious. I agree the parents aren’t great at being the best real life parents but for this movie they are hilarious and it adds to just a loving family between everyone. The line that follows “but I’m adapted” cracks me up every time

    7:11 I never really understood slut-shaming OR virgin-shaming back when I was in high school for this movie too. Pop culture keeps making a big deal about either of those extremes, and they're usually full of sexist double standards. For example, "boys can't be virgins" or "girls can't be sluts" and other sorts of peer pressure. The word "slut" as an insult kind of loses its meaning half of the time when describing two people in a CONSENUAL relationship. The same goes for "virgin" being used as an insult on people who don't want to have sex or choose to wait.

    • @DizzyBusy

      The 80s-early 00s had weird morals like that. Britney Spears announced she was a virgin. How weird was that?? Why did her marketing team think it was any of our business? It was a wild time

      Eh, slut shaming I can understand, like it’s not a good thing for people to sleep with multiple random people without an emotional connection, for one, the risk of STDs and pregnancy gets higher with every partner, and also if the majority of someone’s relationships with people are sexual then they will struggle with non sexual relationships, this isn’t a brag, but from personal experience I can say that majority of my relationships or friendships with woman during my slut era were all based around sex, I joined clubs just to hang out with the girls I thought were hot, I only talked to girls to have sex, not to be friends, not to get homework help, not for anything but sex, and I only know that was part of being a slut because now that I’m in a committed relationship, my relationships and friendships with woman are completely different, that’s just my two cents, it’s a free country do what you want, but a little shame is good sometimes

    Todd is low key the best love interest in all of movies.
    He goes trough this whole arc offscreen where he goes from this shy kid to scared to kiss a girl, to this guy enthusiastically dancing in a bever costume and singing to little kids with a crab on his head, his lack of confidence made way for him to become truly confident in himself.
    He is also always there when he is needed, and not pushy about it as well. He is supporting Olive in his own way, listening to what she is saying and responding to how she feels, all without expectations of anything else.
    And that ending when he is standing outside her window with a mp3 player and a lawn mower is all a cumulation of what Olive told him she wanted out of romance, down to the song he is playing.

    7:37 Hey, as a foreigner, is this realistic to American schools? I seem to have seen this scenario in movies multiple times: a bully says or does something horrid to (usually) the main character and the main character returns the favour. And even though the teacher clearly saw who the perpetrator was, only the self-defending student gets in trouble. Does this normally happen?

    • @imbaby5499
      @imbaby5499 2 месяца назад +7

      I'm not American but it happened quite a bit in my school. I think it might ubiquitous, probably because teachers don't think punishing the bully would yield any results.

    • @pthaloblue100
      @pthaloblue100 2 месяца назад +5

      I don't know if it is just America, maybe it happens a lot here because we have often so many kids in one classroom for one teacher to keep track of they miss what actually happened. Personally, I did get in a huge pile of trouble because I left an uncomfortable situation that was escalating with two of my grade school classmates, no teachers were there to witness it and I got yelled at for leaving a mess I didn't create! 😕

    • @jaykayt44
      @jaykayt44 2 месяца назад +5

      A lot of American schools have what’s called “zero tolerance” policies regarding bullying and violence which means all students gets punished, including any retaliators. School administration is general is just notoriously bad at knowing and empathizing with their students in general so victims are often blamed without evidence. I’m sure similar things happen in other countries without proper student mediation or supervision deal with this too.
