Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this. I have been looking for this film for ages. I have a crappy VHS copy recorded from another copy or TV - can't remember which. But, it's so old, I don't think it would play anyway. I can't believe the studio never had it released on DVD, Blu Ray, etc. Truly one of Gene's best roles as well as a heartbreaking story.
I've never seen a more beautiful movie! The boys were so good. The dialogue superb. The ending so sad but healing ... healing for all the men who mistakenly left a child behind like that and then realized what he done and works to heal. The music was magical. The streets so wonderful. Incredible movie!
Thank you SO much for telling us the whole story, including the end! Now there's no need to watch it! Why would we waste our time watching movies if we can just read "spoilers" instead? Now for the non-sarcastic version: You have just wrecked this show for every single person who comes after you, when all you needed to do was to start your comment with the word "SPOILER" in capital letters. I'm sure they all thank you just as much as I do.
When I was a student a long time ago (1977) I worked P/T at the London Palladium box office. One day, Gene Hackman came in to collect tickets. I recognised him straight away. He stood in line waiting to be served. When he got to the front of the queue he said, 'I think there are some tickets for me - the name's Hackman.' I found them quickly and when I looked back he had taken money out to pay. I had to explain they were free as in someone had already paid for them (often the case when celebs came in) and he was shocked. He looked like he had won a prize and left smiling. I was amazed he hadn't assumed they were free!
Great movie. I cried a lot but, I know that it’ll part of life.. I also know the goodness of God , And if I put my faith in him, he’ll sustain me. Without Jesus Christ Im nothing.
I watched this movie when I was in church Sunday school in Toronto, Canada when it came out in the theatres in 1983 or 1984 as grade four or five student. My Sunday school teacher was Harold and he took out us out to see this movie one Sunday afternoon and everyone cried during the movie. I lost my Dad last year and see my Dad whenever I see this movie over and again. Thank you and God bless
Best of Gene Hackman I'll have to admit. Even the two kids here brought out my childhood experiences that I thought I'd lost to memory. God bless whoever posted this film because they have humanity in their soul. ❤
Very good movie. This kind of life did happen a lot in those days, it's getting better, but it still happen. Andrew experience a lot of hurt, first he loosed his mom then he had to deal with a nanny, his dad didn't love him he only loved Miles, Andrew felt left out and didn't feel a part of the family anymore, that's why he got into that accident, but after that the eyes of his dad opened when he was listening and reading the stuff what Andrew wrote, when Andrew told his dad that he only loved Miles, that was a big shock for him, I even cried, but Andrew was right and was able to tell his dad, after that his dad change his life and be good for both of them. Very well done, a great movie for people that have experience this kind of life. There are probably a lot of people that can relate to this. There are also people that never felt loved anymore by their parents, it's pretty sad to see or hear that, but I would say to all these people, keep your heads up, because there are a lot of people around that do love you, but you only need to see it.
I know that I am going to squawl like crazy, my only child is forever 39 for the third year now, but I am going to cry as long as necessary. ❤ RIP SON 8 19 2O21 ❤
Based on the book of Florence Montgomery (1843-1923) Misunderstood (1869, UK). The original story is deeper, more emotional and written gently. She never had a child but understood the soul of children very well. Nice book, worth reading. Thanks for the movie.
Thank you for posting this movie! I saw it on cable TV over 30 years ago and more than once but I never got the chance to watching it in full, since back then there was no internet or streaming. So is until now that I have the chance to watching it in full from start to finish. I really always wanted to watch it in full because it's a beautiful and touching movie with important lessons about grief and neglect. Thanks again.
I LOVE the chemistry between the boys! You can tell they played their brother roll QUITE WELL! I WISHED I had that, when I was growing up! I've also watched the original version of this movie, and that version is A LOT sadder then this version!
It is just so unfair for children if the parents play favorites and the children knows. Never cried watching a movie for a long time, this one made me.
This is a gem of a movie mostly bc of the outstanding children actors and the excellent direction they received. Gene Hackman while having an emotionally tough role to play as a father to very young, articulate bright boys, and a new widower, did act this role with sensitivity for; grief, for distraction towards his children, particularly the older son, using work as his solace and distance; for confusion as a single parent, but with means to find any kind of decent caregiver. I m sure Gene found time to bond with these children and try to create a history, given the confines to the script, with, of course, the directors’ vision. Location films are exotic and interesting for the audience. Of course this story could have been anywhere, in any society, so I don’t know why Tunisia was important to the real story of a widower dealing with grief and two very young children/sons. However, it is a nuanced, carefully crafted story in the eyes of the 7/8/9 year old son which is a profound, early coming of age, in a comfortable, but foreign environment to the essence of who is mother was; and is to the Uncle, too. Ultimately, a formulaic tearjerker, with a real quality about the complexities of grief for very young children and in this case, a precocious older brother caught between his still babyish brother and his distant, over expectant, bewildered father. I m so glad I got to see this movie and respect all the wonderful acting and direction in this common story. It is special bc of Gene Hackman, Henry Thomas and Huckleberry Fox. Thx to Manouever Prince for finding this forgotten and difficult to find unique movie! Greatly appreciate your efforts and posting it on RUclips, albeit a year ago. I finally caught up with your find. 🥰👍❤️
Well .. didn't know that. I was just reading one comment before but it was more about the writer of a book Misunderstood this movie was based on. But on years the movie was released was in the 80's. Florence Montgomery (UK) was the writer of the book - the commenter said

Gene Hackman had pereviously done I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHER. Here he revisits the subject - he must have had a tough time with his absent dad. The film's action takes place in Tunisia, a strange, even distracting, setting for an American family. Thanks for posting
I wish the sound had been better; I missed so much. Maybe it was my old ears. I hope any fathers watching this film will understand how much children need their fathers.
Thrilled to be subscribed as #816, and I honestly can't believe it's not #816,000. This movie was fabulous and I have been reluctant to watch anything about death or with a son, I am still choking down the loss of my own son who died three years ago. This really touched me deeply and I never knew this gem ever existed. Perhaps I was too busy being a young mom when it came out. Thanks so much for your channel.❤

I watched this more out of couriosity, to see Gene Hackman's interepation as the father. it is good . But unfortunately it is no comparision on the, 1966 Original version, 'Incompresso- 'with Anthony Quayle as the father as in many remakes, there is something missing. Try watching the 1966 version, it is in Italian but rpobably a version with English dubbing or sub titles Thank you for posting
Anthony Quinn was a really great actor! Thank you for telling us. I will look for that. Remakes are almost never as good as the original, but I do appreciate the fact most are in color. I'm not one of tbose who thinks B+W movies are always better. In fact I think they are far less good. B+W greatly lacks nuance, depth, and detail, leaving everything looking flat or even nonexistent, like a grey mush. But the writing, plot, and character development are often superior.
I remember seeing this movie many years ago now. Never forgotten it - in fact every now and then wonder if I'd come across it again. I saw Anthony Quayle's version - although I enjoy Gene Hackman - must admit Anthony Quayle's portrayal is the best.
Nope, no "judgment ". Where in the Bible does it say God judged man? Nowhere. Neither does it say his Son judged man or woman. Decades ago Gene came in the hair salon where I worked. He was extremely friendly, upbeat. Since retiring from movies he's an author.
The father is nuts. The whole plot is derived from that. This is a bad movie for Fathers' Day, because it portrays fatherhood in a very negative way. People like this movie, only because the boys are sweet. "The Road" is a more positive portrayal of fatherhood. Try that movie on Fathers' Day.
@@dolinaj1 Why would a father think that? Not difficult to understand if you are biased against fathers. Otherwise a baffling aspect of the father that is not explained in the story. It's okay to criticize a movie. You lighten up.
I absolutely LOVE this movie. I used to watch it when I was a little boy. I almost cried when I found it up here. Thank you!
This presentation was an absolute masterful look into humanity. A magnificent gift for Father's Day viewing , but equally valued for family viewing❤
Thanks for sharing, I like dramas with children performances a lot!

It's based on a novel by Florence Montgomery. Even with the same title.
Hackman is such a fine actor. I'm sorry he's not in any movies. Hollywood is like real life: they don't want to hire you when you're old.
