So lovely. Donald Sutherland and Anne Archer lead an intense cast in a rewarding suspense laden Bloc thriller, watch till the end, or die in Gulag. Thanks very much for uploading this movie!
Really engaging movie, Sutherland finding himself in an almost Kafkaesque scenario, he and Archer are excellent. Good to see Paul Freeman in a good role.
- Which one was hiding; me or this film - or even both? What exactly was I watching in the 90's? A great film. Atmosphere, sceneries, tensions, narrative, drama. Impressive background music, especially piano-parts slightly closer to final scenes. "The Wife" was particularly good in acting - even surpassing the theatrical level in general, imo. Despite of the tragedy, the "daughter" was so sweet and "coy". More brainy film into which Mr. Sutherland fitted well. There was a sense of certain authenticity, some "real touch" here. The narration was not too fast, which spoils too many western movies. One has to have time to "absorb", to think - somehow identify with the main characters in the film like this. Here it succeeds. Thank you! -
Another great Donald Sutherland film... you seem to be a fan, may I request an upload of Eye of the Needle? I have very good memories of it and would love another look.
No one is like Donald Sutherland: he is mesmerising! 'Don't Look Now' and countless other perfect performances under his belt! When he displays love for a woman, it is utterly credible and like a prayer....
That's strange as much as i remember i have never watched the movie. It is strange to watch it here in Switzerland...with my whole memory and story. That was great that people were intersted in Poland's history.
It's funny to see this film set in Poland during the Cold War period where the protagonist, a disgraced communist leader, is subjected to what might be called clumsy state surveillance and reflects on this anomaly that has turned against him. Today billions of people in all countries (including supposedly democratic ones) are or can be monitored in real time with the help of smartphones connected to the Internet capable of providing geolocation data and being transformed into microphones and spy cameras without the owners knowing, but everyone thinks this is normal. Unperceived oppression is obviously much more destructive than that which is perceived. The West won the Cold War, but the total control paranoia typical of authoritarian eastern European states in the 1970s prevails worldwide.
it might have been a well made film though I detect a certain critique of Russia which most people mistakenly equate with the former USSR. That said the film is outdated exactly for the reasons you describe. We can all be spyed upon whenever "they" choose in all countries of the world.
@@barnsdalemartin5469 Yep. I forgot to say something important: at the end of the film the protagonist manages to deceive the surveillance and escape from Poland. Now there is nowhere to run or hide.

Intrigue , good script and subtleties and it has some truth about as based in pre glasnost Poland , look it up interesting both the film and real life. Title means items or power that can be removed for good of the country possibly with reparations , confusing as he is allowed back into the politburo. Donald Sutherland provides that air of superiority but also knowing his place in the game that ultimately out wits his boss. Good film.
