It's funny to see this film set in Poland during the Cold War period where the protagonist, a disgraced communist leader, is subjected to what might be called clumsy state surveillance and reflects on this anomaly that has turned against him. Today billions of people in all countries (including supposedly democratic ones) are or can be monitored in real time with the help of smartphones connected to the Internet capable of providing geolocation data and being transformed into microphones and spy cameras without the owners knowing, but everyone thinks this is normal. Unperceived oppression is obviously much more destructive than that which is perceived. The West won the Cold War, but the total control paranoia typical of authoritarian eastern European states in the 1970s prevails worldwide.
it might have been a well made film though I detect a certain critique of Russia which most people mistakenly equate with the former USSR. That said the film is outdated exactly for the reasons you describe. We can all be spyed upon whenever "they" choose in all countries of the world.
@@barnsdalemartin5469 Yep. I forgot to say something important: at the end of the film the protagonist manages to deceive the surveillance and escape from Poland. Now there is nowhere to run or hide.
Hai perfettamente ragione. È esattamente quello che penso sempre io. Analisi lucidissima.🤟🏻✨🏅
Look into what Hoover was doing - clumsy lop sided anti Russian as usual.
To all who believe Big Brother is the same anywhere, go try and live in Putin’s Russia, you will feel there’s a tiny difference left in how the collected information is used and what the consequences are. Go try….
At last a movie which held my interest throughout. Donald Sutherland a real actor true to his craft head & shoulders above. Thank you.
I'm Polish old lady escaped from Polish Communism 1979 just when the film starts. My "prison brake" was as dramatic as theirs! Well done !
Well done you! 🎉
Im Polish as well, living in Tasmania, those events are reason why I left Poland, but unfortunately same outcome awaits Polish people because they did not learn from history and allowed to be sold and taken captive by UN,Claus Shwab and Ursula....,sad -historia sie powtarza, pozdrawiam.
A piognant reminder and warning of our present cancel culture.
So lovely. Donald Sutherland and Anne Archer lead an intense cast in a rewarding suspense laden Bloc thriller, watch till the end, or die in Gulag. Thanks very much for uploading this movie!
When the free stuff is better than netflix
The times people where able to speak them minds.Very few still do,but much more people are affraid these days.
Excellent film. Donald Sutherland is a fine and brilliant actor, believable in every role.
RIP Donald Sutherland. This is not one of his best. But i like these cold war type of movies.
Sadly Donald Sutherland is no longer with us.
Donald is excellent worth the watch
Really engaging movie, Sutherland finding himself in an almost Kafkaesque scenario, he and Archer are excellent. Good to see Paul Freeman in a good role.
A real master piece❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for uploading this movie. A very interesting story as well as competent actors.
Wonderful actors. All of them❤

i thought that was a compulsory purchase order?! i got one once from my council they wanted to buy my family's home so I sold for almost 2x it's market value the gullible mugs!
This film is a gem .. the era the plot the set the cars the music their costumes and above all the cast !!! Thank you for this
Great Movie! Some history there. Donald Sutherland another favorite!
What a polish face, mr. Donald has....😊
Well done... Good history movie.... Donald Sutherland, a great ACTOR 😊👍🍀👏My regards from Bucarest ROMANIA!
Superb drama and top class actors. 5* Movie, Thanks Flick Vault
Hi
Certainly a bad hair day for Donald Sutherland throughout this film!
Excellent film excellent cast Donald Sutherland is really something
As song goes by: " WINDS OF CHANGE"..... Scorpions....
Amazingly good movie👌Donald Sutherland never disappoints👍❤
Just when life couldn't get much lower for me spiritually a great film pops up on YT that I never new existed. Thanks.
Myself same. This time of the year is really hard for me. Thank god it’s a nice film.
Some scenes evokes me so much tough memories about the DARK hours of my country....during last years of comunist dictatorship...I CAN SAY ROMANIA SUFFERED VERY MUCH DURING THOSE YEARS... MAYBE MORE THAN OTHER " SISTER COUNTRIES"....
It seems that some sister countries like Hungary and Poland by undermining Europe already forgot about the past !
@@dipling.pitzler7650 Why so!?
@@dipling.pitzler7650 波蘭沒有忘記,但是匈牙利已經忘記了,白俄羅斯忘記了,那些“斯坦”都忘記了,所以,他們還會遭受苦難。
@@viorelpiscanu9425 You really do not know? the most important pillar of democracy is an independent justice system, now go and look what is happening in Poland and specially in Hungary...same in Israel, but that is not in Europe.
@@dipling.pitzler7650 Well... IT depends... Another pillar of democracy is that sovereing & independent nation should be respected by others, no matter If that nation is member of a Union..of free nations! . Just look on the basic rules of EU....ok!?
American movie set in Poland ? 1979.....wow.
Was this movie really made in Poland.....interesting soundtrack.
Wikipedia claims that the movie was a France/Canada/Israel co-production. So no, no an American movie. Too much to hope for, I suppose.
@@idesofmarch1001 it looks like Belarus or Ukraine as the fun fair was most definitely not made up and I’ve seen this style exactly in the village outside of Chernobyl and Belarus in the 1970s
Yes, it is central Warsaw. These quarters that were built after WWII in socialist style. They are called MDM. They look the same now. You can check on Google maps Plac Konstytucji for example.
The Best way to keep your enemies UNDER control is to give them a very important position to have better control upon him... Basic rule in a dictatorship...
This is a great movie with great performances by all actors. It very subtly depicts the terror the people of Poland lived in during those days.
Excellent exposé of the perfidy of politics.
Donald Sotherland and cast excellent. Film interesting plot . Sound though is appalling, volume up and down like a yoyo. Thanks. Dave
Excellent, and such good quality. Thanks for the upload.
Very good!
Amazing movie! Thanks!
Very enjoyable
I think nobody understand what is going on, but that was Like that: boring and very dengereous.
Gripping acting very enjoyable and good filming
sorry to say: the girl's acting was really bad... that's probably why she died so soon in the movie.
Something Connect with " 1984" RIGHT!? Orwelleian atmosphere.... 😮
Communist regimes were 1984, Poland 45-89 no exception!
@@italianstallion9170 Try to read again... IT SEEMS You Did not get what I wrote... Anyway... Best of luck
Feels true (though who remembers anything about Lech Walesa anymore, save his moustache?) I preferred Don Sutherland in STEELYARD BLUES.
Absolutely brilliant movie…10/10
I find the counter revolutionary comrades ...I will be informing Moscow .
Think you'll find Warsaw is in Poland
Donald Sutherland, a rare treat 🙂
RIP Donald Sutherland
Indeed.. " WHO OWN THIS COUNTRY"!? A legitimate question back then...
And now applicable in America.
@@aleccullen2696. And the UK and EU. We are all owned by the WEF now.
Worth a watch.
Why did they apply such a dreadful grading to this rare film, nothing is safe anymore from the wrath of the revisionists.
Life's a bitch in a workers paradise.
This had my attention throughout!
Another great Donald Sutherland film... you seem to be a fan, may I request an upload of Eye of the Needle? I have very good memories of it and would love another look.
The cold war was a sick joke
Good one, worth to watch. Nice Sutherland's acting. He ate the bait and shit on the hook.
Donald Sutherland is always fairly good. In today's climate, I find this hard to watch. I'll try and finish it despite the sentiment.
What an actor!
I don't care it's hot Donald Sutherland in it, Icon.
Pretty depth,,,dealing with corrupt govt administrations 😂😂😮

Very good,thank you.
YOU WILL OWN NOTHING AND BE HAPPY!!!!
Excellent movie!
Wonderful movie suspenseful interesting right to the very end
Too many adverts!
Intrigue , good script and subtleties and it has some truth about as based in pre glasnost Poland , look it up interesting both the film and real life. Title means items or power that can be removed for good of the country possibly with reparations , confusing as he is allowed back into the politburo.
Donald Sutherland provides that air of superiority but also knowing his place in the game that ultimately out wits his boss. Good film.
No one is like Donald Sutherland: he is mesmerising! 'Don't Look Now' and countless other perfect performances under his belt! When he displays love for a woman, it is utterly credible and like a prayer....
Mesmerising? Creepy!
If you can make heads or tails of it.
European Union in 15 years. In some areas starting now...
1:32:30 - RUclips was founded in 2005. There was no RUclips and no RUclipsrs, American or otherwise, back in ther winter of 1979-80, seriously there were none. Nice research for this movie.
We didn’t even have computers, let alone YT.
At least it has a happy ending
Yes, but their daughter got killed.
Why do they always leave the best bits out ? The faces of the decrepit Polit bureau Chief would have been priceless.
Because we, the viewer, can imagine it so much better...Let the audience work!
I reiterate my recent post which is missing (look look !)For those who think that our liberal western societies are no better than the usual dictatorships (I’m not naming any this time), let them live under one of them and tell if the tastes aren’t slightly different. This kind of short-sighted wholesale discontent is what is eroding democracy, which needs responsible citizens to support and sustain it not grumpy finicky customer-minded beneficiaries. JFK’s famous remark still holds : « Don’t ask what your country can do for you… »
Jodhi May
Wow soviet style
From history we may learn important lessons today... RIGHT!? My country was a comunist one until december 1989 too../
RIP Donald. Good film.
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
Why oh why do film makers put that dreadful noise , supposed music over the speaking , it totally ruins a great film .
Ruined by too many ads
Top class Donald Sutherland Intellectually stimulating movie.🏆🎓
That's strange as much as i remember i have never watched the movie. It is strange to watch it here in Switzerland...with my whole memory and story. That was great that people were intersted in Poland's history.

Nice touch at 1h 7min...the taxi driver....with now broken arms.
One photo.... Makes the " world" turns around!!!! This is politics a la comunism ....😊
Donald Sutherland has been a favorite since I first saw him in M.A.S.H.
Excellent film!
An excellent movie but unfortunately that equates to an advert every 5 minutes.
This era is far from over for the worst, but yes I love this movie honestly 😊❤❤❤❤
very poor script unfortunately
well done!
Well that a a suspense filled film..
Excellent acting by those professionals.
Great directing too.
Glad all came out well..
Similar to our present day Russian fellow system....
Thanks for posting this film 👍👍
Great movie
Absolutely superb ! More Donald Sutherland please .
Agree, the best dramatic performance of Donald Sutherland, I have seen .

Donald Sutherland was so good on this movie!😊
- Which one was hiding; me or this film - or even both? What exactly was I watching in the 90's? A great film. Atmosphere, sceneries, tensions, narrative, drama. Impressive background music, especially piano-parts slightly closer to final scenes. "The Wife" was particularly good in acting - even surpassing the theatrical level in general, imo. Despite of the tragedy, the "daughter" was so sweet and "coy". More brainy film into which Mr. Sutherland fitted well. There was a sense of certain authenticity, some "real touch" here. The narration was not too fast, which spoils too many western movies. One has to have time to "absorb", to think - somehow identify with the main characters in the film like this. Here it succeeds. Thank you! -
Hard to watch a film in one go; this one makes it easy. Nice twists, happy ending.
Excelente película
The wife gave up her husband easily, instead of supporting him and blaming him, sad that she contribute to the death of their daughter😌If she watch her daughter instead of blaming only her husband, then she still alive.

2:01 so she gently releases the champagne bottle yet it still impacts the ship like it was shot out of a cannon!?…🤦♂️🤷♂️…😂🤣😂
Hi
Champagne bottles are under pressure.
Shalom to us only in Christ Jesus Yeshua returning soon to reign over the world from Jerusalem forever.
And they acquire momentum whilst released.
@@toosiyabrandt8676 Yes you are correct. And whether it’s a low impact hit on the boats hull or high impact the result is the same. This was an extremely fast impact. And there is no physics that can explain where Such felicity came from after the girl “gently” released the bottle.
Not sure what God has to do with this, but hey as long your all happy. 🙏
