    one of my favorite films - and all the better that Michael Palin is actually playing out the true story of his great-grandfather, Edward Palin

    I really liked the movie... However it is quite irritating to have the screen blown up with ads for another two movies, obscuring the final ending script... Why can't the ads come after the movie is completed and the roll of characters seen..? This really screws the pooch... this has happened so often on so many movies on this platform - I strenuously object to this and wish I could stop it... I paid not to have ads, period... ads should come only after the total completion of the films and the roll of characters...

    I only knew Michael Palin’s genius side of comedy from watching him in “Monty Python” series and movies, and from the hilarious movie “A Fish Named Wanda.” But to my surprise this is the first time I see him in a drama. What a great actor!

      Yes. @LadyAstarionAncunin (below) is correct. We're fortunate to find this entertainment. I agree though it just isn't the Hollywood culture. Learn to live as an outsider in your own country and vote with your dollars and attention. Most of my entertainment originates in Britain and am even more surprised that much is from decades ago. I am adjusting to an alien culture and time everyday.

Migration saved the ethnic Irish & their talents. That accounts for the Irish names present in the Caribbean & Latin America as well as the USA.

Also don't forget people would be expected to dress (formally) for dinner, so he'd need to take a frock coat, formal waistcoat and ties, evening trousers, shirts, collars, shirt fronts, studs, and evening shoes, before he even started packing his walking clothes.

      That name in the 19th century is a more than eligible suitor for a pregnant female without family or fortune or practical education? We have a great re-set today. Females no longer need a men but may expect one if they wish, We see motives more clearly today and have greater self-determiniation. We're more liberated today and are becoming more so. Live accordingly. An engaging story, beautifully filmed with locations and costuming at the highest standard. I believe neither males nor females would want to return to the relationships of those days no matter how picturesque. You can see how the female had no control over her emotions and how, in effect, she destroyed the career of the male lead.

    • @westaussieeggs8867
      @westaussieeggs8867 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@johnwollschlager9827 Absolutely, most of the comments here are through the view of 21st century not taking into account the times it was supposed to portray. Women at that time needed a husband to exist in the society and men need a woman to maintain a household or like this poor man Ashby forbidden to form any sort of relationship if he wanted a career.
      Story of my g-mother... as soon as she turned 16 her family was on a lookout for a suitor and my g-father got an offer of a job as a headmaster at a boys school but he needed a wife to get it. Therefore he went looking for one. He was 28 at that time. Yes, they got married but the marriage was not a happy one.
      Proper on the side of my g-mother but with many indescretions and gambling on the side of my g-father. They were always short of money but my g-father demanded a household run on the level of their social status. He would say to my g-mother: dear we have a dinner for 12 people today, local doctor, lawyer, priest, business person... And she had to provide. She started taking boarders to help with the finances.
      So people think about the times, it is not 21c that is portrayed in this movie.

    It is difficult to feel any afection for the insufferable, pompous, boring, insensitive, humerless 'hero' of the film.

      @@johnwollschlager9827 She if she is so does not represent all women's views. I actually loved how this character was not fooled into fake mannerisms etc. A woman who could think for herself.

    A pity! Michael Palin is not a good actor - needed a stronger talent to support the story
