Julien Rochedy shared this video on an Instagram's story and I found that was a really good video about masculinity. High quality and subtitles in french, nothing to tell anymore
Excellent ! I live in France and in my country TV, radio, school, etc...Promote softness and weakness and feels masculinity as toxic ! But Humans need a good balance between feminine and masculine values. Your channel is on the right way. Congratulations !
Thanks Alexandre! Moi je suis pas français mais j'ai habité un peu en France donc je comprends bien ce que tu dis. C'est exact. I appreciate your encouragement and support, so thank you!
The Geats sheltered for too long behind their great king, trusting in his valor and strength. For all Beowulf's virtues, he gave little thought for the future. When he fell, he left neither heir nor successor, leaving them at the mercy of the Swedes, the Danes and anyone else who fancied a go. There was no one to carry the torch because of a terrible mistake. They had trusted in a great hero to solve everything for them. And God help us, we still haven't learned. Directed here by Brittany Sellner. I'm already glad of what I see.

thank you for this great interpretation. In school they teach us that Beowulf is a bad character because of his toxic masculinity and his "lack of humility". I hate whenever someone says "toxic masculinity" so much. Thank you for your video!!
Exceptional. This was an unexpected joy to watch. "Ballad of the White Horse." was another work that really highlighted the need for virtuous and strong men. And warned sternly of the coming generations of weak and corrupt and men. "They shall come mild as monkish clerks, With many a scroll and pen; And backward shall ye turn and gaze, Desiring one of Alfred's days, When pagans still were men."
I've never read "Ballad of the White Horse" but just looked into it and am super interested! I'll definitely have to give that a read at some point. Thanks for sharing. Also, thanks for your kind words, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)
The narrative for this video is exceptionally well written. Outstanding my friend. And so very essential if we are to drag ourselves up from the gutter that is now in power.
Except for the whole 'defining toxic masculinity as the same as strong men and defending the concept of strong men' thing, rather than actually talking about the actual definition of toxic masculinity. . . I guess it gives an excellent example of someone using the straw man fallacy.
Beowulf is a beautiful story with lots of different adventures. But it is not by far where aggressive masculinity is the most intense. For that you have to read the Iliad or the Icelandic sagas (Egils’ or Njals saga for instance). And there are very strong women as well :)
@@RewiretheWest I am listening to it through LibriVox because it is free but it is taking some getting used to because the way they translated it makes it sounds like how Yoda talks. I'm sure that way is more authentic to how it was originally penned but because of that and the flowery language means that it takes more effort on my part to properly 'digest' it.
That's a good question. You're getting at the heart of what this video is about - the discussion of what is "toxic" masculinity, and what is simply "healthy" masculinity. I believe genuine toxic masculinity occurs when traditionally masculine traits are heightened to the point of selfish domineering or inflicting injury on others. For example, leadership becoming authoritarianism, strength becoming abuse, or drive becoming ruthless ambition. As mentioned in the video, it is in fact weak men who are the most toxic. Weak men use force, abuse power, and don't take responsibility for their actions because they're not self-sufficient enough to get by in life without doing so. In case it's not obvious, lots of men who appear "strong" on the surface may very well be weak (and therefore "toxic") on the inside. On the contrary, strong men who are confident in themselves and their role in society empower others to flourish, seek to do the right thing, and build up those around them. They use their qualities of leadership, strength, and drive to lay out a better future for all. I believe masculinity is healthy, and when cultivated well leads to virtue and the flourishing of all. What I don't appreciate is the framing of all forms of traditional masculinity as "toxic." They can be, but they're certainly not by default. If you'd like an analogy, take the example of testosterone and steroids. Testosterone is good, and in fact very necessary. You can increase testosterone naturally by lifting weights and working out (ie pushing yourself to grow and develop as an individual). Using steroids, however, is to cheat the system - it's taking a shortcut to get results (ie to abuse masculine traits to get what you want). Using steroids, like any almost any attempt in life to short-cut hard work, discipline, and self-development, results in dangerous side effects. All this to say, I believe strong masculinity can and should be channeled for the good of society. Instead of rejecting masculinity itself, we should instead focus on and cultivate the aspects of it that result in courageous leaders, good fathers, and virtuous men who strive to serve others and leave their world better than they found it.
Toxic masculinity is not synonym for 'strong men'. It is more related to weakness: men so obsessed with adhering to male gender stereotypes that it hurts them, whether through failing to ask for help when they need it, avoiding things they enjoy because they aren't 'manly' enough, etc. It does NOT mean all masculinity is toxic, just as the term 'toxic chemical' doesn't mean every single chemical is toxic. Maybe anti-feminists should just avoid this subject altogether if they are so incapable of forming a coherent argument without having to resort to tearing down a straw man of the term. Or in this case, a definition that has nothing to do with toxic masculinity other than both involving men.
What exactly is "vapid" about calling out men who don't take responsibility for their actions, and who abuse force and power to get what they want? What is "reactionary" about encouraging men to be good fathers, fight for justice, and live their lives for the good and prosperity of their society and loved ones?
@@ThePhilologicalBell please see my reply to your other comment.
