  • In the Nicene Creed we state that we believe in "one, holy, CATHOLIC, and apostolic Church." In the Apostles' Creed we state that we believe in the "holy Catholic Church."
    What does Catholic mean?
Why is the Roman Catholic Church a "Catholic" Church?
    The Meaning of Catholic
The word catholic comes from the Greek word katholikos, which means "universal," or literally "on the whole."
We might think of the meaning of Catholic, therefore, in two ways:
    Little "c" Catholic
Little "c" catholic can be used as a term to mean universal. This is the way in which we use the term Catholic in the Nicene Creed. We believe in a universal church that welcomes everyone in the whole world.
    Big "C" Catholic
When we write capital "C" Church, we refer to the Roman Catholic Church.
The term Catholic Church appears in the writings of many of the early Church Fathers including Ignatius of Antioch (AD 107), Cyril of Jerusalem (4th century), Augustine of Hippo (4th-5th centuries).
In general, these writers used the term the Catholic Church in comparison to other churches that were disconnected from a bishop or heretical. Therefore, the term Catholic Church was used by bishops and early Christian writers to refer to the one, true Church.
Today the term Catholic is often used to refer to the Roman Catholic Church compared to Protestant churches or Orthodox churches.

Why do you place your faith in these bishops? Why do you allow the catholic clergy to determine what is and isn't hersey?

We Catholics put our faith in Jesus Christ. How exactly do YOU determine what is heresy? Your church, pastor, elders, denomination? If you have a disagreement with what they deem heretical then you can just go to the church down the street. Then, if you agree with them you can become a member. If not, just find another one who aligns more closely with what you believe. Maybe you think that scripture alone determines what is heretical. Where do you think they think they got the canonized scripture ? The Catholic Church! That’s why😊
