    Alright, for all the low-carbers out there: if you don't like the idea of this, you don't have to follow it. Continue with your cholesterol, fat-laden diet and see where it lands you in 20-40 years. And leave us high-carb, starch-lovers alone. Some of these low-carbers actually believe the gurus that say a steak with a slab of butter on top is better for you than a plain baked potato or even a piece of fruit. Give me break.

    This may sound dramatic as I know my weight wasn’t as bad as it could be, around 4 months ago I started to change my diet to a solely vegan raw food/plant based starch diet. I was 286.6 pounds 3 months 2 weeks ago, I am now 244 pounds (still got another 44 pounds to go). The day I started I decided to put my logic to the test: “I want to change my life, health and weight so much that I will die trying”. Due to how I was raised I thought cutting out meat and eating this way would make me sick. I figured “I don’t think I could get much worse so it’s worth a shot” I just can’t get over how life changing it has been changing my diet to this. It’s not just the weight loss, it’s my achey knees (believe it or not, even at my highest weight of 300 pounds I really liked to go for fast walks), they have healed up and I can walk without being in pain, my heart rate is low as I can exercise properly, my bloodwork is absolutely amazing, my sleep is good, my mental clarity is fantastic, my chronic eye pain I’ve had for 10 years after going blind in one eye is totally gone, it was so bad I was on a sickness benefit because I could hardly function. I am now looking for a job! Food “allergies” I used to have are gone, my energy levels are fantastic. I could go on and on.
    Please, if you are on the fence I beg you to give this way of eating a try. I absolutely promise you if you can get through the first several weeks it will be the best thing you will ever do for yourself. I have basically been given a second shot at life. I am only 26, I was obese for only 5 years and it was beginning to take a real toll. I am still big, but at the rate I’m losing weight I just know I will make it to a perfect body weight for my height.
    I feel full without the need of meat, absolutely have no cravings for any foods too.
    Thank you for inspiring me and teaching me how to change for the better Dr McDougall

      I'd like to know how you are going a year from your comment.... today, 11 Dec 2021?
      I've never heard of this before, and there are quite a few negative comments here where people have ended up sick through doing this way of eating, but then I see the positive ones like yourself, who are finding this the answer.
      I must admit, when he showed the pictures of the starchy foods, my body felt bloated and full already; and I also believe there needs to be discussion in this video on present gut issues... but maybe that gets covered in his book.
      Anyway, please do comment again, because I think more people need to do this at least a year in from their original comment.

      Its works and it made sense. I used to eat a double egg sandwich for breakfast. A sausage sandwich for lunch. And KFC or Pizza for dinner. And I could never understand why I was fat. I never considered that alot of food.
      Then I discovered Dr John McDougal. And I became a starchavore. In 7 months I went from 228lbs at 5 8" tall to a toned 166lbs. And my constipation stopped. My energy throughout the day increased vastly. My diabetes eventually REVERSED. My blood pressure stabilized. My arthritis disappeared.
      After all those positive changes. I'm NEVER EVER going bad to eating crap. Meat dairy and oils and processed crap is POISON TO THE HUMAN BODY.

    I've really gotten into a groove with this way of eating. I make a vegetable soup every day, just an easy thing with tomato puree, and frozen vegetables, lentils, some garlic powder and pepper, dry herbs, and a little soy sauce. Then I have a pasta or bread, or rice, or tortillas, maybe potatoes with that soup, and then I'll have some fruit, or maybe a vegan no oil banana bread for dessert. I eat that basic way day after day, and have for years, and I never tire of the food! It's always delicious!

    One scary thought is if it wasn't for RUclips millions of people would not have access to this information. Yes, they could buy books, but sadly most people don't do that these days, they want to watch videos (TV, RUclips, etc.). And most wouldn't even know to buy the book unless they saw an advertisement for it on TV. I've seen very little about this issue on TV in the last few years, or ever.

      Your comment was written 4 years ago, and I still had not heard of the starch diet/solution by Dr. McDougall. I just happened to run into one of his talks a few weeks ago (September, 2019). I have a serious kidney disease, and I started on the diet a little over two weeks ago. My blood pressure is lower, my energy is up (I don't have to take daily naps anymore), my urine output has gone up, I've lost 7 pounds, and I can't believe how easy this eating system is. Because these are basic foods (potatoes, rice, oatmeal, corn, etc.), they are inexpensive and simple foods. Not having oil is only a problem when going out, but it can be done. I'm still on dialysis, but I have a feeling I won't be on dialysis 13 hours per day anymore. I don't expect to go off dialysis completely, but if that happens and I don't need a transplant after all, I'm thrilled.

    I wouldn't be a whole food-plant based person without RUclips and Dr. Mcdougall. I am off blood pressure medication and I don't need a statin, and will never need a statin because of this diet. My Dad takes like 7 pills of which 2: blood pressure and statins could be dropped with doctor supervision if he was on whole food-plant based diet (assuming bp and cholesterol are under control from the diet, which it would be). I tried. I mention how good I feel to my parents on occasion, and hopefully they switch.

    I think the "plant-based whole foods books" authors should use a visual for people to remember what they should eat. I say start with a bowl of oatmeal (like an oatmeal bath), add a large potato in the oatmeal, that has spiral pasta as hair, rice (sideways) for eyes, corn kernel for nose and a kidney bean for a mouth. There we have all the types of starches. lol

      @@karenannvillar6241 I also think there's less of a need for cheat days with this diet because the point of starches are that they satisfy you. For example I am a vegan and tended to eat less starches and I lost a lot of weight but I kept binging sometimes on oats. I never knew why and called myself oats addicted. But that's not true. The reality is that my body and brain wanted the oats aka the starch/sugar. My brain even felt stressed without starch and I'd notice my brain suddenly cool off after eating the oats.
      I concluded then that having starches all day would satisfy me preventing the need for ever cheating.

    That says that the heavens and the Earth were created before being filled.
    The Hebrews in Mitz'rayim have witness to the following:
    «We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic".
    They also ate barley, wheat and spelt.
    Lentils are mentioned also as part of the diet of Ya'aqob.

    There's alot of B12 in the soil (dirt), that's where plant eating animals get it from. One of best ways for a vegan to get B12, in my opinion, is to sometimes eat carrots or other roots with a little bit of soil (dirt) on them or even better eat them right after digging them up from your 'pesticide free' garden. I'm not talking about huge chunks of dirt, but don't peel and wash away all the good stuff. Must be organic of course. Hope this helps :-)

    He refers Chinese diet of rice has kept over a billion people thin. What he fails to mention is that many are poor and consume very little overall calories. It is scientific fact that a "starch" based diet can have harmful affects on insulin if not eaten with fat and protein.
    Here's a test. Eat nothing but white rice for a week. See how much energy you have. The first couple of days you will have all kinds of energy. But then you will notice that you will begin to get tired in the afternoon.. You will begin to start feeling hungry more often through the day. Your blood sugar will be spiking and I believe if you stay on a starch diet your cholesterol will rise.
    Starch doesn't make you fat, the insulin spikes from a high carb diet do. Try if for yourself.

    • @etaylor8028
      @etaylor8028 9 лет назад +9

      Kristopher Kruger I don't think he is advocating eating solely white rice. He is advocating eating predominantly starch, which means the bulk of your meal would be potato or rice or oats or something, and then you would have fruits and vegetables and nuts alongside it. It would be madness to suggest eating solely white rice.
      Also, since when was starch causing harm to our insulin levels? Look at the diabetes sufferers today - none of them are eating starch/plant-based diets. What they are eating is refined sugar and processed animal products. Have you ever met a diabetic vegan? Nope, me neither. You're saying "it is a scientific fact" when you only need to look at the examples today for the real evidence. I have never met a vegan who was overweight, never.

    • @rubbleofempires
      @rubbleofempires 9 лет назад +4

      Kristopher Kruger I've been eating basically fruit and white rice for about two weeks now. Basically fruit for breakfast, and rice for lunch and dinner, with the odd bit of fruit here and there. I have as much energy as normal, if not maybe a bit more. I am not any more hungry than I was before, but I've been eating whenever I want and I've lost 2 kilos (or 4.4 pounds), doing if anything, less exercise than I was before. But the two times I did go for a long walk (as I often did before I started this diet) I had just as much energy as I had done previously.

    • @kristopherk1091
      @kristopherk1091 9 лет назад

      rubbleofempires Everyone will lose wight on that type of diet in the short term, But basically insulin spikes will eventually push the scale upward (known as insulin resistance) - that and along with a very low protein diet will cause your body to break down muscle to use for repair. When you lose muscle due to very low protein intake, you will begin to gain weight.
      Remember rice doesn't contain all the essential amino acids, therefore it requires that you eat beans along with the rice to fill in the gaps. You also need to know that many forms of Rice contain arsenic so you should eat that in moderation.
      There are several online calculators that can help you to determine how much daily protein intake you need to maintain the muscle mass you currently have. If you continuously drop below the level your body needs, you will lose muscle.
      Also know the signs of insulin resistance - the most common sign is fat around the midsection, especially the stomach.

    • @kristopherk1091
      @kristopherk1091 9 лет назад

      ***** Yes, processed foods will kill you and the salt levels in processed foods are simply obscene.
      Remember that "starches", even those based on vegetables may not provide all the nutrients you need. Ideally you want to add in fish, eggs, lean cuts of meat, seeds and nuts. Women should make sure they are getting enough Folic Acid, B12, and iron from the foods they are eating. Folic Acid in particular are linked with female health issues.
      Some people don't realize that the "way" you cook food can have an impact on the glycemic index of that food - which will affect whether the food can cause you to gain weight.
      Take for example Sweet Potatoes, when baked their GI is relativity low, much better than russet potatoes. But if that sweet potatoes is deep fried, the GI of the potatoes goes up very high and is basically turned into a simple sugar. This is because the heat and oil basically "pre-digests" the food and allows it to break down in the body very quickly - when this happens, insulin spikes.

      I sometimes get tired from rice/potatoes. I think it's dehydration, tired and fatigue is a symptom of dehydration. I think cooked food often doesn't provide enough water on its own for proper digestion so when you eat it, it takes some water from your body to digest it. Try drinking 16-20oz / 400-600ml water 20 minutes before eating them. I seem to avoid getting tired after meals if I focus more on drinking enough water. Up to 4L/1Gallon per day!

    oh my god this is such a load of garbage? Oils have no nutrients they just dilute foods? FAT IS A NUTRIENT THAT WE NEED. Its not a vitamin its a fat. And many Fats have FAT SOULUBLE VITAMINS. You don't get Fat soluble vitamins from POTATOES!
    Ya the guy got really thin eating only potatoes so he had to include fat in his diet. How the hell are you going to last on an all potato diet? Ya John said himself he loved mashed potatoes and gravy when he was a kid well try to have potatoes without butter in the mashed potatoes or without gravy(from animals) its going to taste like crap. There is a reason why people put butter on potatoes and a reason why it tastes 100 times better with a bit of butter and salt because both butter and salt are very important for the body that's why the body is craving it and satisfied by eating it.
    when Jogn says the reason why plants have diseases its because of animals and their "poop" Poop is also called fertilizer, its natural to have animals poop under plants if you change nature to remove all pathogens so our weak bodies can continue until there is a pathogen we can't avoid. There is certain theories that we need viruses, parasites and pathogens as checks and balanced in our bodies and we know we are a symbiotic organism in many cases if the body is strong and resilient it can deflect infection. cold, flue, viruses ect...
    Yeah omega 3 fats are synonymous with fish not potatoes for a reason. Where you get DHA from potatoes. There is no too much DHA, more DHA the better and you only get it from fish, just having a bit from your own bodies production is not optimal at all as many studies show benefits all across the board for DHA consumption.
    Ya all large successful populations of people also eat GMO's, or are going to soon it doesn't mean that what is best to feed over populated societies is whats best to eat for an individual person. and it was only really 10,000 years ago not 50,000 or 100,000 years ago that's ridiculous no one has said agriculture was around back then. Even if Neanderthals ate some limited types of grains that doesn't mean it was a mainstay in their diet, humans are resourceful they will eat when they are hungry and often humans go hungry back then so they had to eat what they could and find new ways of surviving. Of coarse you can survive off starches the question is it healthy to strictly eat starches which is the radical claim that John is making. In many cultures it was the leaders and the powerful people who had access to fish and higher nutrient foods. The farmers, the poor, the soildiers who had to work and fight instead of think and design society ate mainly carbs; carbs are great for running, great for working long hours in the field, if you want to eat for energy that's great it will do it but the fats are what is healthy for your brain, fish is whats healthy for your brain.
    John mentions the Eskimos but he neglects to mention the north American Indians, the Polynesians and new Zealand and Australian aboriginals, cultures living in the tropical rainforest.

      That's assuming that there are recommended foods for all peoples on this earth. And I'm guessing that you think foods like butter, milk, and oily fish and meats don't count as recommended foods.
      I think it is clear that people can thrive on varying diets. All diets that have been successful on the long term included some animal foods that is clear. Weather it is low in fat and protein is another question. Generally those diets low in fats and proteins in the east have been diets for the working class in asia. These diets are the cause of the small bodies of many people in that part of the world. They have smaller frames, they live long but that diet is best geared for workers. There is a reason why the top class Royalty and Nobility all around the world were eating animal foods far more and they we're generally a lot bigger in size(probably brain size too) then the lower class people. Foods that the rich had better access to in these highly populated Asian countries were foods like fish and other animal fats that are very good for the brain. There are no studies linking starches to brain health, quiet the contrary but oily fish has DHA and sardines and anchovies have DMAE which is also great for the brain.

    Oh man I don't know how much of this garbage I can go through today.
    he says Neanderthals were vegan. first of all no1 said they were vegan. Vegan means no meat there is not primarily or mostly vegan its like saying its mostly peace there is either peace or no peace. Okay if some people want to call the Neanderthals mostly vegetarian that's different but still far from true the most likely diet is meat consumption along the lines of other hunter and gatherers. John says the bowen arrow was only for defense and he must have just watched the animal decay instead of eat it because the Neanderthal must have been grossed out by meat and then now we are addicted hopelessly to meat. Come on give me a break. This is some real non biased review of the Ice man Neanderthals diet. which was composed of 30% animal foods and he even had meat in his colon from his last meal!
    "Last year, researchers looking at the chemical composition of ötzi's hair suggested that he was primarily vegetarian or even vegan, eating little if any meat or milk1.
    This came as a surprise to University of Glasgow botanical archaeologist James Dickson. "I could hardly believe it," says Dickson, who with colleagues from several institutions now presents evidence to challenge the claim.
    The Iceman's innards, they contend, reveal that ötzi was much more of a gourmand. His last supper included fire-cooked flatbread, herbs and meat. Dickson and his colleagues make the case for omnivory in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London B 2.
    Their argument centres on the contents of ötzi's colon, which included grain, moss, pollen, the eggs of a parasitic whipworm and muscle fibres from meat.
    They also take issue with previous analyses of the chemicals in ötzi's hair. The team's interpretation of the hair data suggests that meat may have made up as much as 30% of the Iceman's diet, bringing his tastes in line with modern hunter-gatherer societies."

I want to listen and decifer the good or bad that comes out of Johns mouth maybe I can learn something maybe I can see some common ground from what he says and other very reputable healers/ health speakers. So far no luck he is just pretty extreme and his advice just ignores the data and clinical studies and other evidence that clearly states the harms or at least the limitations of eating lots of carbs. A good example is the glycemic index foods which starches are very high on that index and the result carbs have on brain function vs fat. Carbs definetly have their place in many cultures who have lived very healthy but to demonize meat and fat is foolish because those very cultures and infact all cultures have glorified those fats and meats. In fact the only reason it has been in limitation is the access to animal foods. Agriculture is only there because it is important to feed the masses special the poor and peasant classes, that's just how its been done. There is no evidence that the people who ate higher fat foods had modern diseases there simpily were not any of these modern diseases 1 or 2,3 hundred years ago. Even one hundred years ago they were extremely rare. Look at this cookbook pre 1900, almost all recipies have either milk, cream, butter or eggs. www.archive.org/stream/worcesterfamilyc00worc#page/11/mode/2up
      During that time when people were eating like that (highly animal food) there still was almost no heart disease, cancer, diabetes; all of those diseases dramatically increased when vegetable oils were introduced instead of lard/tallow 1950+. That's not the only factor but it is a huge root cause because we are not designed to eat those rancid vegetable oils, specially when we heat them!

      But what about the other 90 percent of our evolutionary conquests. Where we striving on meat?
      That book you cited is only a hundred years old or so.. I’ve been to France at a castle from the 1200s in la petite pierre and my stage there in the village was mostly set up to store surpluses of vegetables and preserves. It’s just more sustainable, refrigerators didn’t exist.
      Our palate and laziness has made us store energy the most efficient way possible.
      Milking, refining food and raising cattle is part of food storage , but proof of this has only found to go back about ten thousand years. Other than that it’s been fresh meat, plants, but mostly foods that can be stored during our evolution.

    It's true for me that a meal of simply steamed potatoes with a bit of extravirgin olive oil, makes me satisfies and good after it.
    No sleepiness or fatigue.
    I've been eating vegan for more than 10 years and I can't recommended it enough. A lighter body makes you, your mind, aware of the Truth of who You are. You became increasily more spiritual, more calm and understanding.
    Please try.

    I am not a vegan and do OMAD Keto. Yet, I am a firm believer that *regardless your diet choices we can learn from others to make better informed choices.*
    I love rice and potatoes. *Good lecture.*
