If I was that Cessna I’d be on the radio letting Tower know that, I too, am unarmed.
hahaha... you know she was thinking about it too! she hesitated too long... lol
I flew in San Diego while also in the Marine Corps working on Hornets. When I was all happy with my speed one day in my 172... Then 2 jets took off while I was in the little block of airspace west of Miramar and then... POOF, these guys were just straight gone like I was standing still. Asked a Pilot what he thought about Cessna VS Hornet. He said it's like riding a pedal bike VS a serious sports car.
They were on different frequencies at the time. The Cessna would not have heard any of the conversation until the blue angle checked in with tower and was given the landing clearance.
Slick Cessna incoming!
And to lower the arresting cable.
When the controller asks if they can touch down prior to the approach end arresting cable, he's concerned if they can put the aircraft down precisely in a 1000' long box. The confidence of the response is a very modest understatement - F-18s land (trap) on a 300' long deck, aiming to hook one of 4 (3 on newest carrier) spaced 50' apart. Plus the carrier deck, unlike the runway, is constantly moving and can also be pitching and rolling as well.
And it could be foggy and at night too. Landing on land is child's play compared to a carrier deck.
In the PBS video Carrier, pilots have to land at night on choppy seas in a storm. Cdr. Fravor is the last to land and has no possibility of refueling. Of course, he makes a perfect landing.
Wow!
He's clarifying that they will have to land before the landing runway legally starts - in the displaced threshold. Not sure why they wanted to do that vs 3/4 down the runway, and outside of an emergency you aren't supposed to touch down there anyway.
@@mikemilner8080 😰
For those of you who are curious, The woman on the mic was Lt. Katlin Forster, Blue Angel 8 from 2021-2022. #8 is the squadrons NFO (Backseater in the 7 jet)
Lt. Katlin Forster was the events coordinator. Lcdr. Amanda Lee is the first. I don't know who that woman on the mike is.
Stalin went to the Blues in '23, This happened in 2022. And i know it was Katlin because that's her voice@@Bluelightning23
@@Bluelightning23That was Katlin Forster, just like bisonaviation said.
I was there on the ground, watching. Couldn’t see anything but since I live right there, I’m always watching the planes.
@bisonaviation1217 She went to the blues, but she wasn't the first pilot. Since katlin wasn't a pilot, I'm confused as to why she is talking on the mic.
3:15 That is a crash barrier, not an arresting cable. Completely different devices for completely different situations.
Barricade. Pedantically, it’s a different device than a Barrier, which is no longer used.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arresting_gear#Barricade
Not sure why they used that pic. The airport does have a cable. It was installed around 2004 since the airport is used for military training.
@FishingPlanetMobile64budget fields use spike strips...
@FishingPlanetMobile64 MSN is a civil/military airport so they do have real arresting cables.
@FishingPlanetMobile64wrong
The professionalism of this interaction is awe inspiring!
I know on A6s if you have to blow the gear down after hydraulic failure it locks gear in place. And no hydraulics means you can't steer to taxi.
Yowee😮
Special Breed. No WAY could I be that calm during an emergency! Bravo!
I wasn’t a Hornet guy (Hawkeyes) but this is mostly a procedural emergency. If the primary hydraulics fail to lower the gear, the backup methods can do it just fine, but the NATOPS (think: owner’s manual) says you have to take a trap with arresting gear, just in case the gear isn’t 100% down for some reason. If it collapses, you’d rather not be rolling out on the runway. Better to have your hook attached to a rope stopping you.
In order to get the gear rigged, you have to declare an emergency.
I had to do a couple of these in the Hawkeye and it’s not that big of a deal inside the plane.
Controllers tend to freak because they hear “Emergency” but I get that.
Had the pleasure of seeing them in Norfolk. I was off duty and at Virginia Beach.... well, had duty with a beer. Great show. Saw them a couple of times.
"I'm a complete slick jet." No kidding. An understatement.
I'd bet she's a slick pilot too!
@@BobbyTucker-- The Air Force has pilots. The Navy has aviators.
Couldn't they use the brakes to steer but why make the situation worse.
What does slick jet mean? Thank you.
No armaments, fuel tank(s), wingtip missiles, or other attachments.
2:56 made me jump. Thought my smoke alarm was going off!
R u listening with your headphones,sir?
@@Flight_Follower Nope.
Haha. Me too.
0.42 surprised me.
Why'd you show the catch net? They were landing with the arresting cable that works with their tailhook, same as on a flight deck, not the nets.
Calm and cool fighter pilot.👍💪
Yeah! She is so calm and confident 🙏
@@Flight_Follower She definitely knew what she was doing and confidence most definitely.
Is Blue Angle 8 a back up jet and being ferried to the next show site? 1:40
@@probe98 *Blue Angel 8* is the callsign for the Events Coordinator who _normally_ rides in the backseat of a FA-18F, partnered with Blue Angel #7, who serves as the team Narrator in front seat. They normally travel in the #7 jet as the advance team for the next show site. In this case, Blue Angel #7 (a naval aviator) is likely in the front seat flying the plane, while #8 (a naval flight officer) is in the backseat running the checklists, and operating the radio using her callsign. This incident occurred in November of 2021. The voice you hear is *Lt. Katlin Forster,* a fleet F/A-18F Weapons Systems Officer. Lt. Forster served as *Blue Angel #8* Events Coordinator for the 2021 and 2022 show seasons.
Lt. Katlin Foster's callsign, Blue Angel 8, should be updated to include the word "Ice".
SO perfectly professional pilot and controller god bless you all..AMEN.
Sounds like the hydraulic failure affected not only the gear lowering mechanisms, but also the brake application.
I'm surprised, I thought military equipment had better redundancy than that.
Keep in mind, these are designed to land on an aircraft carrier with arresting gear. No need for breaks in that situation.
@@danielpowers3320 Wow, so they don't need brakes for taxiing around the deck either? I never knew that, thanks! 🙄
Hydraulics are needed for nosewheel steering as well. That's why the tow is required.
@@SplashJohn just trying to point out during a loss of hydraulics, the brakes aren't much of a concern since it would land on a ship, and then immediately be hooked up to a tow bar to park. Again, this is just in the case of an emergency not normal use.
Redundancy also adds weight though so the downsides might outweigh the upsides in this case, especially a fighter jet that is designed to land on aircraft carriers with arresting cables
Excuse me: She is NOT a pilot. She is a NAVAL AVIATOR with gold wings. Everybody else is just a pilot.
I use AF-1 callsign when I'm out flying my Cessna . . .
Similar situation way back in 2003 at the Patrick AFB "Century of Flight" Air Show. Blue Angel jet had to land with Barricade, I believe from a hyde issue. We were close enough to see the landing which looked pretty intense! Was interesting because the Blue Angels continued with the show while the solo jet with the issue just circled over the ocean.
Amazing how calm they are...
Should the best pilots in the world not be calm and collected?
Outstanding ATC & Pilot communications!
she's too happy for an emergency ... lol
I was driving toward The White House One Day When I Looked up and saw Five Blue Angels directly Overhead. Awesome 😊❤ !
Emergency gear extension on every retractable gear aircraft which can happen to any one
Absolutely! It can happen anytime.
See a lot of questions regarding Madison etc. Truax Airforce base is located in Madison. It is also the National Guard base. In fact, they fly F-35's out of Truax. My question is where was the F/A 18 Blue Angel going or coming from? Also no video of the arrested landing at all?
This was right after an airshow in Milwaukee.
I'm surprised with that much advance notice of this landing (I'm guessing 15-25 minutes) that no one filmed the actual landing and made it available. Why didn't that happen?
Because this is RUclips, where fraudulent advertising is always the order of the day.
@@TheDavidlloydjones Are you saying this incident didn't really happen?
Wow just wow
Maybe someone did! Having said that, it was a bit of a non-event.
What kind of regional airport has arresting gear?
Is it normal that a regional airport would have arresting cables?
I don't have much knowledge on that
Had to look it up myself. Madison, while a regional airport, is a civil-military field. It is the home of the 115th Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard. The emergency arresting gear for the runways makes sense with the fighters that are based there.
@@HeisenBurg1722 Thank you very much!☮️
Portland International (PDX) in Oregon has a cable, because it too is a civil/military shared airport.
When the Blues do an air show it's a requirement for the hosting airport to have temporary arresting gear installed for emergencies such as this. #7 actually tests it upon initial arrival in advance of the team
Why does a commercial airport have arresting gear?
It’s a regional airport not a commercial. They have a military field there for Natural Guard and it’s used daily for military ops. They have several ramps and taxiways restricted to military use only.
Air Force aircraft won't be able to stop on the runway if they lose brakes or hyde, they're too fast on the approach and have no reversers. So even airforce aircraft have hooks (for the cable at the end of the runway)
MSN is both commercial airport and military airport. @@PTRRanger951
When did this happen?
November 30, 2021
On 1 hand it's funny listening to a civilian ask a NAVY pilot if they can land on the land in daylight.
On the other hand, the pilot was a QF.
That looked like a lot more than an arresting cable.
Yeah, that’s a Barricade Net, used when the arresting cable system or an aircraft’s tail hook fails.
Except they didn't use that to land. They used an arresting cable that the airport puts up that they use to trap on, just like on the carrier. The incorrect photo in this video is of a barricade net, used for planes that lose their brakes entirely.
Total Professionalism by both parties
Guess there is no manual gear crank on an F 18. Shouldn't have been an emergency if they had one.
Foul deck, foul deck, this is no drill! Rig the barricade!
Um. The final picture. Thats not an arresting gear...thats a barricade. Wtf. I may just be a navy brat who joined the army, but even I know the difference
Yet you couldn’t help showing off your knowledge
@@Flight_Follower no. Just pointing out your fuck up
What difference did it make? It didn’t bother the other 150k viewers
Hang on.. "Blue Angel 8 are you armed with anything?"??
The Angels don't mount anything other than smoke or tanks on their planes right?
As far as you know. 😁
@lucasokeefe7935 Never Assume. It's a bonafide "checklist" question of safety to ask.
Amanda Lee. She's the best.
This was from a couple years ago.
This is the first female Blue Angel pilot?
Did they make it safely
Oh yeah they did
Are you armed??
Doesn't he realize they are a flight demonstration team.
They are running a checklist.
Those planes can be fully loaded. Yes they do more show work as the team but when war comes they fly to the front.
@@charlesmaurer6214 i hope that's sarcasm
@@charlesmaurer6214while that is often told to make congress happy, it is not true.
I am a former Growler Pilot (EW super hornet/Rhino). I had a buddy in the Blues last year. Those jets are highly modified, gun is removed, smoke system place instead. Major software changes and even controls are modified. All those jets are at the end of their life and will goto a barnyard or museum after the team.
They're an aerial demonstration team, but the Blue Angel F/A 18 Super Hornets are also combat ready aircraft that can be fitted with the full compliment of ordnance if necessary.
Did ATC ask a blue angel if it was armed? LOL
@kennyb7883 You may have missed it, but #8 did respond that the aircraft was "Clean"[of any munitions, missiles etc].
Clickbait warning: there is no video of any landing here, just audio of towaer talk well beforehand.

That's why it is written “ Real Audio” in Thumbnil
OMG...a girl...what is this world coming to?? YOU GO GIRL!!! I wanted to fly a Thunderbird....
Whoever told Cessna 57T to do what ever he told him to do, seriously needs to slow TF down and talk like a normal person. This isn't a speed reading contest, ffs.
This is old
All this dude's videos are old as hell. The gays, grannies, and grandes video they posted the other day is so old, it's in high school.
I've never heard of the Blue Angels having to declare an emergency before, but now that I have, it's a female pilot. 😁
I kid! I kid!
Sorta.
Go Army! Beat Navy!
Notice, GA pilots, how she did not annoy everyone on the radio by repeatedly saying "mayday" or "pan pan". Professionals say "declare an emergency".
Cringe
Just to let you know that this was façk because there no number 8 for the blue Angels it's only 7
Blue 8 call sign is the advanced coordinator., not a performing part of the demo team.
Wrong.. #8 usually shows up a few days in advance of an airshow...handles media etc
Blue Angel 8 is the callsign designated for the Events Coordinator (usually a reel or back seat rider)
The events Coordinator travels with Blue Angel 7, the narrator and press pilot and together, they run everything behind the scenes fir each airshow. They depart typically a day before the Delta for each airshow to ensure the site us ready for arrival
I was an enlisted man in the Events Coordinators office in 2015-2018
@@TheCyberMantis When the current super Hornets were transferred to the Blues, 9 were single-seat F-18E and 3 were two-seat F-18F. I saw one show where two #7 jets were part of the show (I'm guessing mechanical problems with the others) and a video last winter from El Centro where #4 was a F-18F.

Tax dollars pissed away every hour they fly
Believe me, there are far worse ways of government tax money being pissed away than just on an aerial demonstration team.
yea and those hours allow YOU to post YOUR freely written garbage and be able to sleep at night without worrying about some enemy slitting your throat... but hey, people like you will usually be the first to run away like cowards so those like me have to step up to protect sheep like you.
The Angels and T-Bird pilots are accruing flight hours and experience. They can either fly aimlessly over the desert to gain hours, or put on a show for the tax payers that are paying for those hours in the air.
Its NOT pissed away tax dollars, that $$ is going to be spent regardless. Learn something why don't ya. re-tard
