  • Hello everyone, welcome to ‪@AutoScholarwithMrB‬ ! Today we are doing the simple job of replacing the valve cover gasket on this 2010 Toyota Prius hybrid. Before starting this job, disconnect the orange service plug and the battery for safety!
I did this job with the wiper cowl removed, but I am not sure it is necessary. I does make it much easier if you do, and only takes a few minutes.
If you order the gasket from Toyota, don't forget to get the grommets for the oil passageway and the center bolt, along with the spark plug tube seals. These come with the Felpro kit found at most automotive part stores.
Any questions? Leave them in the comments!

What happened to the installation of the actual valve cover gasket? That can easily be put in incorrectly.

Just dropping you a big "Thank you!" for taking the time to do this! Always appreciate those who are willing to go the extra steps required to not just do the job, but film, edit, and post!

Did you apply sealant to the joint between the timing cover and the camshaft housing as is recommended?

I was thinking the same thing too. Great video nonetheless, but that sealant between the valve cover and timing chain cover should have been mentioned.

What is the actual part name of the 3 holed gasket? Thanks

Doesnt the gasket need a drop or two of silicone sealant in a select spot or two?

I went to my local auto zone and asked the same thing and they said no and google says yes so I’m not entirely sure what I should do

Thank you for the very informative video! Also, how to get the stuck those seals off if they’re bonded to the cylinder cover? They’re soo stiff and can’t get em off

Thanks again for another great video! Thinking about doing this. Do you have any videos on how you organize the parts as they come out. I'm worried I will not remember how to put everything back together.

The Felpro sparkplug gaskets are slightly larger than the OEM toyota ones, which makes a big difference when installing the new ones. Instead of hammering them in, you only need oil around the outside and you can push them in without even needing to bend the tangs back. I highly recommend paying the $20 for all 4 and making it an easy 5 min job to replace those.

Followed the video to the T and I can’t for the life of me get the tube gaskets to go in. Used the right socket size and even a seal driver and I’ve already damaged all the tube seals. What could I be doing wrong? I’ve tried tapping them in light and with a little force. Any extra tips will help please.

Ugh, sorry to hear that because I may or may not have had similar problems in the past! I used the old ones flipped over and hit firmly, yet gently, around and around until they were seated. I still had to tap a few of them back out just a touch because they went in too far. Don't understand why 1) Toyota put those stupid tabs in the way. Like, if that's the only thing keeping your gaskets in place, you've already got a major problem... and 2) why they wouldn't just have the seals "bottom out" so that you CAN'T tap them in too far.

I'm gonna wait right here for the head gasket repair, or oil consumption repair video. I feel that's the natural progression for this 3rd Gen.
