Nice video. I love the upgrade on mine. I had my battery mounted on the rear rack just like you. I have now mounted my battery on top of the stock battery on top of the beam. Keep up the good work.
We put on the cargo baskets and in the back of my head I kept thinking “look at all the places to mount batteries!”
@@ElectricAllWheel I was in the same situation as you. I originally wanted it mounted on the center beam on top of the stock battery to leave the rear rack space but couldn't screw into the frame or the stock battery would not slide in and out. It took me time but I figured it out. I wish I could upload a pick on here to show you.

@@juanescorza2984 I am planning to mount my 2nd battery to my step-thru coming next week too.
Even if you could slide the main battery out you should never drill holes into that frame that can let water seep in, without at least some rubber seals, the battery compartment should be sealed from the top at least, rain and moisture will find its way in and wont find a way out and corrode battery terminals, connector pins, and anything not sealed.
Hopefully the frame is 3/16 of an inch thick then you have enough thickness you can drill and thread-tap blind holes into the frame, with enough threads to hold the battery secure.
Btw, the engineering for thread strength is only 1.25 x the bolt diameter into a properly tapped threaded hole is being held by the threads, so basically a short bolt provides as much load-holding as a long bolt in properly tapped holes.
If the battery holder is too thin to tap, I would epoxy some threaded nuts to the top of the battery beam, if I had a MIG welding gun that would be best but you would have to grind off the paint to bare metal at the welds, then paint the nuts to match.
If this battery had a mounting plate with full flat contact, I would probably epoxy the mounting plate right to the top of the frame.

@@ElectricAllWheel Imagine your Lectric with 1100W peak, 80nm torq, programmable display/controls, hyd brakes, 4" fat tires, bigger battery, 22A controller and 34mph top speed... Thats my T42... It came on my Bday, Nov28. So, Nov28 this yr, my wty expires and I customize my electrics... Meanwhile, I'm working on a stubby folding stem, BMX bars, and putting miles on this lil beast! Debating on adding a 48V30A and a Bolton battery coupler or Going for a 52V30A and a Blender from SparkCycleworks... OR, add a 48V20AH parallel and a 12V80AH in series for 60V to the motor!?!?! Heat buildup may limit that setup to winter rides. LOL
I really love that you fit the small 20 amp balancer into the controller bay, that's the first time I've seen it done. Probably because most folks use the larger 30 amp types, but it's gonna get hot in summer where your palm trees are I bet. I am going for a similar setup with my 2.0 XP, and I now think a couple of small cheap thermocouple wires between and on the controller and the balancer are maybe not a bad idea. The reason being that those devices have components that can get hot without good airflow. It's probably fine, but expensive if it actually does form hot spots. That said, awesome POC build man!
Thanks! The 20A was chosen to match the controller. The current is limited so it’s anticipated that heat dissipation will be minimal especially considering the potential possibilities of a new 30a controller with a matching new 30a discharge balance. Thank you for watching!

I have a 30 amp balancer and a 30 amp BMS on my new 48v/20Ah battery now which this controller will never ask to draw that many amps from. So if you go with a new controller, that sounds very cool indeed to see, now that I am just out of warranty. :) Take care.
Another thing you can do if you ever want to free up your rack space is to mount the battery mount to the frame using some Gorilla mounting tape. It's a very strong hold and it puts the extra weight closer to the front of the bike which is better for weight distribution. Since you're tall you should have no problem with step over clearance. The tape forms an extra strong bond with whatever coating is on the paint. When I attached more batteries I had to pull out the excess cabling from inside the frame to make room for the new battery connections. The XP has way too much excess cable.

Bought my Lectric last month and its so much fun,but im still riding my Trek Dual Sport 2 as daily. That extra weight around my belly has to come off , but man ebikes are so so much fun. I get 22 miles on one battery.
Trek is a great bike. Definitely an enjoyable ride.

I have the same stock battery and I get over 35 miles on a charge (with a bit of charge left). I weigh 235. I do peddle all the time but at speed 4 (mech shifter) and rarely go to electric speed 3. My peddling is always comfortable, up hill or not.
Always offset your solder connections so that they are NOT opposite each other. You never know when the friction gremlins will show up.
I use a similar setup system. But I turn on the key to the battery that I want to run my bike. I do this so I can tell which battery is getting weak and needs to be replaced. I like the idea about those no solder clamps using the heat gun. I will have to get myself some of those for sure. My Lectric 2.0 with the dual battery I am giving to a friend as soon as my Lectric Premium gets delivered because I like the mid-drive motor versus the hub drive. Great video I enjoyed watching it.

Small note about electric safety - *make sure both batteries are fully charged before connecting them.* It's not unsafe to connect batteries of different mAh in parallel together it is however unsafe to connect batteries with different voltages together, which they will be at different levels of charge even if they have the same "nominal" (READ: IN NAME ONLY) voltage. At this level (48v) the chance of an explosion is small but not impossible, and the Discharge Balancer box makes it even less likely, *but not impossible.* Its job is to ensure continuous discharging safety, if you put two batteries into it with wildly different voltages one time, *expect smoke.* And you should also be concerned about extra wear, the batteries will try to even out their voltages which will cause extreme heat which will cause the cells to fail earlier or even possibly leak/puff up. The key is to have both batteries at the same voltage - so technically you could match them ~80% to ~80% charge level etc, but it's better and safer to not think about that and just fully charge them before connecting. Also never let the batteries drain unevenly, either use them both at the same time, or only connect them once both are fully charged
Just for the safety some electric bike dont have portable batteries. Is it safe to charge both batteries while connected to the balancer with the controller?
@@detroy183 If you're asking if it's okay to charge both batteries with one plug - I wouldn't call it "safe". But if they have similar voltage profiles and charge times, I don't think it's likely it'll end badly. I'd ask an electrician though
As an automotive technician I can tell you you always want to hand solder your connections and close up with shrink wrap because using solder balls or solder masks can add too much resistance to the wire

This is all dependent. Weight, throttle usage, etc.
In the most relatable way possible, at 245lbs with a speed addiction and zero regard for battery preservation, I anticipate 20 miles while the batteries are brand new.
This was done to ensure a days worth of excessive overindulgence for new young ebike riders.

We humbly request forgiveness for not EVER being so frugal with the “gas.” Our guesstimate is dual batteries discharged with conscious thought towards assist, while having zero regard for hard starts and speed limits… 20-30 miles at 250 lb rider weight.
Great video, you made it look easy. I really have been wanting to do something like this on my XP 2.0. Just wondering if would be okay to use a 48 volt 20ah battery from Unit Pack Power that says, Max Constant Discharge Current:30A/50A( BMS) Or is this too strong for the controller?

If you used a 20A balancer it would be the limiting factor. Any balancer larger than that and the controller will be limiting
I'm curious if I'm gonna need to do this. I'm about 260 lbs and I'm planning on trying to ride about 20 miles per day. Just curious how many miles you were getting before adding the second battery?
Do it. You’ll want the freedom of choice. You won’t want to be confined by conservation of battery.
At that weight and an average 14-16 mph throttle, you’ll need double.
Dollar for dollar, it’s an excellent investment.

Can you charge both batteries while they are plug in with the balancer and the contoller? Or can charge one battery at a time while plug in with the balancer?
With the current set up, the original battery is charged as normal in the bike. We simply disconnect the second battery when charging it. The connection is easily accessible.
Quick question: I brought my bike on vacation, but forgot my external batteries charger. If I reinstall it, will the extra battery charge thru the lectric charger? Thanks!
The charger will need to independently charge each battery but should work for both.
If you bought the recommended battery the factory Lectric charger will charge it

2ft will provide a length that will allow you attached to rear rack. Any excess can be coiled in the bag.

What would happen if you used the 30 amp version ? Would you go faster ?
For 30A to matter you would need to replace the Lectric controller as well. A quick check with the rear hub current limits would be worthwhile as well as BMS discharge capabilities. However, the beauty of Lectric is the customer service and warranty. Keep that in mind as you move forward! Thank you for watching.
I have some steep hills, not long gradual hills. Will this help or do I need to look into a stronger motor?
Lots of factors involved in that. Your riding style. Whether you pedal. The intrinsic value of your bike.
You’re never going to hear us shy away from a special mod like a new motor, but that will require an upgraded controller and associated components. You might consider selling and acquiring a bigger motor and higher voltage system.
@@ElectricAllWheel I have a “Specialized ground control” mtb that I want to convert. It’s to tall and I think putting 24” rims/wheels will help. I plan to peddle it like a regular bike but would like to be able to get to where I’m going faster. I won’t be going on trails or off reading. I picked the bike up dirt cheap. I’m aware of the amount of money I will put into it. I figure it was a better investment than buying a much heavier bike ready to go.

Officially, the motor, controller, battery BMS, as well as balance discharge would all need to be matched for max current. Heat will become an issue.
The Lectric controller is a 20A controller. The balance discharge is as well.
Unofficially, you might be intrigued by a Google search of the phrase shunt mod.
Remember there are limiting factors from all components listed above. Heat becomes more of an issue as well.
Could I add a 10 ah battery to the 14 ah that comes on the counter long range with this ?
Yes. Ah doesn’t matter. Just make sure voltage rating matches.

Everything does not fit in there. Not without compromising connectors and bending the crap out of wires. Maybe with the new xp's there is more room. The balancer looks like it needs to mounted externally on the first gen XP. I do not feel comfortable mounting it inside with the controller as there is t even enough room for the controller and stock wires to begin with. I'm trying to do it now on my own XP.
Keep in mind that you can extract some of the same existing factory cable from the housing to give yourself some room. They often leave excess cable in the controller compartment. We neatly wrapped excess cable with zip ties on a few of the 2.0s and 1.0s that we have performed installations on recently
@@ElectricAllWheel prior to seeing your reply I ended up pulling the excess blk wires out as much as they would go wrapped in blk wire loom and mounted the balancer externally while still keeping a good look. Love the kit and extra distance.

Both. It’s a Balanced discharge to the low voltage cutoff of the controller.

It’s is good practice to treat the system as if the balancer is not there and you are running batteries in straight parallel. This would require full charge and twin specs. However, the point of the balancer is to compensate for the scenario you describe. Just be sure your spec voltage for each battery is the same. Meaning, a Lectric is 48V. Do not use a 52V or 36V battery.

It is good practice to do so, regardless. However, we charge the original while still in the frame. The second battery is easy to unplug, so we do.

If the capacities of the batteries are different, how those batteries will depleted? At the end of the trip, their voltage will be it equal?
The balancer balances voltage. If one battery is more charged than the other it will draw down the voltage to that of the other battery then uniformly discharge both.

@@ElectricAllWheel i bought controller but on the video you have external battery which connected to its own quick connector. Connector was mounted on the rack with zipper lock.

How do you charge the batteries? separately or have to remove them from bike?
The original stays and is charged normally while in the frame. The new one gets unplugged and charged separately.

@@jimbianca9560 We charge the internal battery as normal. We pull the connection for the second battery for precaution prior to charging.
It is not anticipated that the back feed would damage the discharge balancer, however the ability to help prevent any issues is too easy not to oblige.
