- Everyone who owns a LeapPad knows that it's super useful for teaching the kiddos essential learning skills such as reading and fluency. But what's the value for the older, tech-savvy ones in the crowd?

This used to have me horrified as a kid my aunt was sold a defective device so it would do that while I was playing I'm 23 now and I just had to look this up to see if this really happen to anybody else or was just Just me. Growing up other kids were afraid of the monster in the closet myth I was afraid of this despite this thing brought so much joy as well....

You cant actually destroy the cartridge data I think. These are ROM cartridges, which means Read Only Memory. Zero data is actually saved to the cartridges while you play, so nothing can get overwritten or corrupted. The Pad will ask for data that abruptly doesnt exist, and it doesnt know what to do next. Other times it may get stuck on the last piece of audio data, like a sound effect, that it had successfully loaded. If it couldn’t load the whole piece of data, the garbled mess it was working on would be played instead.

this device uses the leap-font, along with the pre-pollux based leapster systems (leapster2 and before)
leap-font based devices like to glitch out when it can't read a cartridge for some reason, but the most common one you'll get on the leapster is the gargling noises.
sometimes, the voice/audio would come back right after the cartridge is reseated properly, although sometimes it doesn't and keeps gargling/shuts off. other times, voices/audio would continue, but the game would fail to even start back up again.

I remember my LeapPad having the weirdest glitch I would put in, let's say, a Scooby-Doo cartridge, but after a while, it would play the audio of a completely different book! Specifically, one about this kid saying something about "My tooth is loose!" IDK if we even HAD that book cause honestly, I was a pretty stupid kid! I don't know what I did wrong, or if my brothers did something, but eventually, we just gave up
Lily’s loose tooth was the original book that came with the LeapPad, it didn’t require a cartridge. When you heard that book while you were using a different one it was probably due to there being something wrong with the book cartridge you were using.
