It's unclear what leads up to it, but seems to happen frequently in New Jersey.

That’s what I was going to say! This isn’t the first time I’ve heard of a home just exploding into tiny pieces! Why does this happen? I wish the news people would say what is causing this. It’s absolute insanity. Last year it happened to another home right in NJ.

My distant opinion, is gas leak.
Sudden explosions, nice neighborhood, newish home, means with a newish home that the windows might have been tightly shut, and then with a gas leak either from a newly incompletely tightened gas appliance hose, due to recent "install" or recent "maintenance" by someone, THAT adds up to gas leak at the appliance hose faulty connection, gas building up to explosion level ratio of gas to atmosphere in the air tightly (windows all or mostly closed allowing none to escape and ensure the ratio isn't thus explosive), and then with some internal electrical connection in the home igniting the gas.
Or, if would have to be proven by detectives, prosecutors, if it was the above intentionally done, but again, same principle, windows tightly closed so the gas buildup could not escape and reached the ratio where electrical connections provided the spark.
Advice: Be super mindful of all gas appliance "work" or "installation" and be sure to speak up FAST in case you smell gas on the gas lines or gas appliance "work" or "installation." Be super mindful right after any work or installation, cannot stress this enough.
If you do smell gas, immediately evacuate, Leave the building, call 911 from outside your building. Newish tightly window shut houses if there's no one there, and the gas has time to build up, like occupants off for months at a time, be mindful of the smell of gas and take it very seriously!
New home "gas leak" explosions, further advice, if you are going to be away from your home for extended periods, leave some windows upper floors cracked open. Also, if away for extended time from your building, don't suggest you have ANY work done on your gas lines or gas appliance including installations, because someone needs to be there AFTER the "work" or "installation" to smell if there is any small gas leaking!
It's all common sense. If you SMELL gas, call 911 immediately from OUTSIDE the building. Don't fail to do this if you smell gas!!!!
Take the smell of gas seriously! All your life!
IF THERE IS ANY UNSUNG HERO IN THE HISTORY OF GAS INDUSTRY, IT'S THE LONG FORGOTTEN ANCIENT ORIGINAL GAS EMPLOYEES WHO THOUGHT UP PUTTING THE STINK IN GAS. I ALWAYS THINK THE PERSON(S) WHO THOUGHT OF PUTTING THE STINK IN GAS OUGHT TO HAVE RECEIVED THE NOBEL PRIZE!

There were two men in the house. It's very likely they would have noticed the smell of gas, especially at such high concentrations that it demolished an entire home. My bet is foul play, but I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm going to guess and say it was a gas leak.
