  • Balancing is challenging, especially when moving between various postures within the same pose. With a few tips, however, poses like Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana become much more accessible, even for beginners!
In this tutorial, we discuss UTTHITA HASTA PADANGUSTHASANA \ EXTENDED HAND TO BIG TOE, a balance posture from Ashtanga’s Primary Series. You’ll learn the vinyasa cues and Sanskrit count as you move through all three states of this asana. We share tips to help you keep your balance, especially as you transition into each part of the vinyasa, so you can stay focused and stable. You’ll learn what not to do (and why) and what to do instead so you can safely work toward the full expression of the pose even through various modifications.

wow the thing about not going straight for the shin or knee and grabbing the toe even if the leg is bent really helped me today! ive practiced for years and always felt that i either had to grab the knee (no improvement ever) or try to straigthen my leg but compromise the whole pose, and i thought grabbing the toe and not straightening made no sense but today i just held that pose with all the rest of the pose straight and i could really feel all the work my leg and hip flexor muscles were doing, definitely practicing this way from now on, thank you!

The details that y'all talk about with internal/external rotation, drishti, and all the "What not to do"s are SO HELPFUL. The details on *what* to focus on in the asana as a beginner are really helpful as well! Thank you both!

This is the hardest pose from the half primary for me. Balance is hard, but straight leg is even more harder. My pose is something like David showed 🤭

A tough pose but so much good work in it. I really feel it in my quad holding up the leg at the end. For me as well it's a good measure of the progression of flexibility in my body as I can plainly see how much higher I can lift my legs compared to a year ago. This is one of the most interesting asanas to me. I would like to see a tutorial on Purvattanasana, my most detested posture

Thanks!! This is the most challenging pose for me. 2 years ago, I could balance and do it (nor perfect) but with flow. This year, I have been practicing the last 3 months with NO balance, and I had to start all over again with this pose... What happened? I don't know. My teacher never gets stressed and simply tells me to take it easy, "Do it as a child playing." Do not think the posture that much, and that advice helps me 😊

Thank you for the tutorial! Couple questions. 1. standing leg, can it be bend a bit? Is it right or wrong? 2. The last part, holding the leg strait without hands, how/what to do to raise it higher? I'm practicing for 10 years (once a week), but this leg is still 20 cm from the floor since the day one, no improvement whatsOrEver. Should I contract/relax/feel any particular part of my leg muscles? If you already have a tutorial for both those questions, please, point on it. :) Thank you very-very much.

I was actually going for the easy pose, even though I learned it the hard way in class. I was always wondering why should I stand there hunched over with a not straighten leg and having my teacher hold me😂. So back to that difficult pose, because the easy why isn’t really fun! Thanks for pointing it out so clear! I have a question about first series, I do not understand when it starts, as you say it starts with that Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana?

You did not point the toe in the first bit? I thought the leg needs to go into the hip socket and the toes need to be pointed when touching the knee? It's confusing cause people have different approaches to it.

  • @lourdesgyan

As a yoga teacher and 10yrs Ashtanga Yoga.practicioner, 20yrs hatha yoga, with science background, I strongly disagree with you:
    1. When you say don't use strap! Why hands to leg ratio is different for every body, hence the force and effort use to bring foot up is same you can use with strap. People can build flexibility on conditioning exercises, it's a delusion to "practice and all is coming" used for the series. It doesn't magically happen. Especially within a 5 breath cycle.
    2. Stability is key, so hands to shin fine, as they build all the anatomical engagements to hold and balance.
    Out of that, great tutorial

Good tips on balance for what is currently probably my worst posture in primary series!🦩My sense of balance is really affected by travel and my surroundings… I can do this pose at home, but in a shala with other people, it’s tricky and difficult, particularly in the past year or so for some reason.🤔🙈😅
