  • While this deep twist is great for so many reasons, we find there are some common misalignments that happen because it can be a tricky one to express fully. We want you to have access to healthy twisting!
In this tutorial, we’re discussing MARICHYASANA C \ SAGE POSE from Ashtanga's Primary Series. You’ll learn the Sanskrit count and traditional vinyasa cues as we show you step by step how to find the full expression of the pose. We show you why Marichyasana C is different from the A, B, and D variations and what alignment is priority when working through it. You’ll see some common mistakes and what not to do (and why!) while also getting tips for foot/leg placement and how to safely access the twist while keeping the sitz bones grounded.

Wow, I'm glad I watched this. I've been following along with your half primary led series nearly every day for about a month now, and I can tell that I've increased my range of motion in Marichyasana C. With that increase in ROM has come a strange feeling in my guts when I untwist, and while it's shortlived, is rather uncomfortable. That "wringing" feeling that Jelena described is spot-on.
Good to know that that's normal, and also is a reminder to not run away from the feeling, but feel it and not attach to it.

David And Jelena, you're amazing! And I would like to add this for anyone who like me has a temporary misalignment in their body. One of my teachers Peter Sanson from New Zealand helped me understand this.
Put your foot out to the side of the mat, not aligned to the outside of the hip but further away, and then go into the posture.
At first after doing this I had to lie down for a couple of minutes because my hip tendon [I guess] would spasm and it was seriously excruciatingly painful. I could, I would skip it, and I'm happy that Peter kept me with it. I also had to help me arm with my other arm, only on one side the other side I can do easily.
The spasms stopped and now I'm slowly moving my foot closer towards the edge of my hip instead of further out. Trust this helps someone.
    With much love.
    VM
