➡️ It's time for more JINJER and Eugene's play-through of "Vortex" has been the top-requested song for me to do next. After reviewing "Wallflower" months ago, I quickly started to understand this band's unique writing style with their use of slow-burn builds, careful melodic buildup, and absolute crushing payoffs caked with infectious heavy riffs. These guys have really mastered their own brand in the metal scene. In this video I dissect Eugene's melodic approach to the guitar riffs, how he borrows chordal notes for bass fills (creating counterpoint-style melodies), his usage of power chords and tritone chords on bass, and a zoom-out look at this band's writing style which continues to blow me away. Guys - very few bands can take you on a journey in 4 minutes, but Jinjer have woven an epic narrative for every song I've heard so far. I can't wait to check out more!

I appreciate the way Eugene can play super fast but he also knows when to leave space, great song writer

Jinjer used to be a two guitar band. After the second guitar player left, Eugene kind of started pulling double duty to fill that sonic void left by that absent guitar. I think this evolution of his playing style lead into the unique Jinjer sound that we now love. Finally, Vlad's arrival on the drums sealed the deal and everything they put out since is absolute gold.

Billy Sheehan did the same thing. He was always in 3 piece bands which leaves more empty space he wanted to fill.

My favourite bass playing in any of their songs is still "Who Is Gonna Be The One" (official live version). He has some wicked little finger tapping runs in that one, as well as some amazing background runs.

Jinjer used to be a 5-piece band with an additional guitarist. When they became a 4-piece, it seems that Eugene and Roman started to "fill in" for the missing guitar in their existing tracks. So now Eugene naturally uses the higher register of his bass and sometimes takes the melodic lead. This came up in a discussion video (in Russian I think) if I understood the slightly ropy subtitles correctly.

Dropped what I was doing to watch!!!! So glad you got to enjoy this. Attention to detail is their signature, in much the same way as Rush. The "Perennial" bass playthrough is a good next choice, but you should definitely check out the Live at Wacken 2019 video on your own afterwards. Phenomenal live video, excellent sound. Also, the "Home Back" bass playthrough is like no other bass playthrough you've ever seen. I'll just leave it at that.

Check out the bass play through of their song Home Back . A little background on the track Roman, Eugene and Tatiana were forced to leave their home of Donetsk Ukraine after Russia initially invaded Ukraine back in 2014. It's a heavy song especially when you add in the lyrics. But they did have a bit of fun with the visual effects to have some fun with the truck.

I think one reason why theres so much voicing of the guitar melodies through the upper bass notes is because theres only one guitar. So that extra bit of counterpoint and harmony from the bass fills out the melodic side of the sound. I really love this dudes bass line writing just because it does all the fun things when it comes to playing bass in a metal band. The most freedom you could ever have and he expresses that

I agree, the interplay between Eugene and Roman is interesting! Sometimes Roman will just play "weaves" of harmonies, and Eugene will take over playing more guitar-like riffs (while keeping the roots)

your opening statement is correct and it's the same thing that korn did 3 decades ago and why the were my favorite band when they broke out then, and why jinjer is now
they can be super heavy without getting that heaviness from speed, the way thrash metal does, for example

  • @module79l28

What makes this song even more difficult, shall we say, is that each part is played twice (one after the other) but never repeated again. This means that they had to memorise all the different parts and their connections almost as if they were different songs and play them together.
Yes, that's a multi-scale bass and drop A is not that low of a tuning.

His control is amazing, so fluid, how does he get that snappy tone? Is it just force or what?

    • @LowEndUniversity
      @LowEndUniversity  10 месяцев назад +2

It really is! Many times, players can be striking strings much harder than it looks - it's really at the finger joint (bass) or wrist joint (guitar, or picked bass). If they are exercising relaxation and control with their forearm, it can look like a light touch still. I'd say that's the case here. However, I'd argue that a huge part of the snappy tone is from the effects, drive, and compression that are very much at play with his tone. Compression is a fantastic tool to get snappy, even note response from anything you play. A little compression, when correctly dialed in, can achieve this!

Jinjer are a culmination of the 2010s Ukrainian metal. I almost feel bad that everything they are doing is very very old to me personally because I heard people here do it again and again for so long 😑
Anyway, they are masterful at Ukrainian Metal. Especially intro to "Vortex" feels like a Zlam or Megamass song and it could literally be that and work 🙃
Definitely check out Zlam, check out Megamass, check out TOL, Velikhan - it's basically all that but still developing into Jinjer. I feel like a heretic saying that but it's almost literally true
