Georgian polyphonic singing is a mesmerizing musical tradition characterized by intricate harmonies, often performed a cappella by multiple singers. It's renowned for its rich cultural significance and UNESCO recognition as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The unique vocal techniques and the storytelling within the music make it truly captivating.

When Georgian vocal polyphony was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Heritage masterpiece in 2001, Chakrulo was cited as a prime example. Chakrulo was one of 29 musical compositions included on the Voyager Golden Records that were sent into space on Voyager 2 on 20 August 1977 and Voyager 1 on 5 September 1977. Chakrulo (Georgian: ჩაკრულო, transliterated: chak'rulo) is a Georgian polyphonic choral folk song. It is a three-part song from the region of Kakheti, dramatising preparations for a battle. It is characterised by two highly ornamented individual vocal parts over a choral foundation. Polyphonic singing, in the Georgian language, is a secular tradition in a country whose language and culture have often been oppressed by invaders. There are three types of polyphony in Georgia: complex polyphony, which is common in Svaneti; polyphonic dialogue over a bass background, prevalent in the Kakheti region in Eastern Georgia; and contrasted polyphony with three partially improvised sung parts, characteristic of western Georgia. The Chakrulo song, which is sung at ceremonies and festivals and belongs to the first category, is distinguished by its use of metaphor and its yodel, the krimanchuli and a “cockerel’s crow”, performed by a male falsetto singer. Some of these songs are linked to the cult of the grapevine and many date back to the eighth century. The songs traditionally pervaded all areas of everyday life, ranging from work in the fields (the Naduri, which incorporates the sounds of physical effort into the music) to songs to curing of illnesses and to Christmas Carols (Alilo). Byzantine liturgical hymns also incorporated the Georgian polyphonic tradition to such an extent that they became a significant expression of it. Georgian polyphonic singing

Georgian folk song creativity originates from time immemorial. The historical sources of the 8th-4th centuries AD provide us with information about the songs of the Georgians about work, work and travel. In that distant era, other genres were also born, which is indicated by the archaic structure and pagan content of many songs that have come down to us. Georgian folk song originated and developed in rural areas. The bearers of this richest culture were singing peasants gifted with the talent of improvisation, who were passionately involved in the process of collective music making and developed creative and performing traditions with joint efforts. They passed down samples of folk music as an oral tradition from generation to generation. The singing treasure reached us through folk professionalism. The main merit of Georgian folk song creativity is polyphony, which arose in the environment of monophonic singing cultures. You will not find examples of polyphony in the neighboring countries of Georgia.
In Georgia, three-voice is mainly developed. We will find samples of single, two-part and four-part songs. Different types of polyphony were formed in East and West Georgia, in which the development of national musical thought reached a high level. Georgian folk song creativity is distinguished by the richness and variety of key, rhythmic-intonational structures, polyphonic forms, expressive means and performance traditions. To put it bluntly, Georgians have been singing since ancient times when sowing, harvesting, pressing grapes (pressing wine in a pitcher dates back to 8000 years in Georgia, and UNESCO recognized Georgia as the country of wine and grapes), when sick, when casting a spell, when fighting, and you can imagine even at the time of death...

This is Chakrulo, one of the most famous Georgian polyphonic songs. These singers are really great and show how strongly rooted the vocal tradition is in Georgia. There are other versions you can find on youtube by the famous Rustavi Choir.

Thank you for your nice comment. At times it sounds similar to "Chakrulo", but this isn't "Chakrulo". You can watch "Chakrulo" here:

A traveling troupe of Georgian dancers and singers in traditional dress performed in my home town of Pasadena, California twenty or so years ago, and when the men started singing in the style heard here in this video, I started tearing up. It's so unadulterated and full and strong and human. Men do not create enough beauty in our culture. Thank you, guys, for sharing yours.
