    Miss Hewson was, in fact, a Cornell graduate (1955), in Food & Nutrition. The official title at Appian Way appears to have been home economist, which, whatever, it's better than Pizza Tester. She eventually got married (in 1976) to someone else who went to Cornell, though I'm starting to think they met in Worcester. (Where he worked in insurance.) Anyway, her husband (Louis Mason) retired in 1983, and they moved to Ogunquit (or York) Maine, where Mrs. Mason apparently still serves on a bunch of low-level art-oriented town committees (even though she's in her 80s), and wrote a food column in the local paper. (Louis died in 2009.)

    • @loissimmons6558
      @loissimmons6558 6 лет назад +8

      Miss Hewson was a graduate of what was then known as the School of Home Economics. Around the time I matriculated at Cornell in 1970, it was rebranded as the School of Human Ecology.
      According to my 1987 edition of Cornell undergraduate alumni, if Louis Mason attended Cornell, he didn't graduate from there. Miss Hewson is listed as Mrs. Patricia A. Mason, a free lance food writer from Ogunquit, ME. But there is nary a mention of Louis Mason.

    Major White lived a long life, dying in 2010 at the age of 85. Mr. Walker, on the other hand, was killed in 1966 after a mid-air collision between his F-104 and an XB-70 (US experimental supersonic bomber) during an unauthorized flight for publicity photos. There is absolutely such a thing as bad publicity.

    "The Appian Way Pizza Company" brings back memories. When I was a did, my mom would buy that brand of "pizza in a box". It came with a package of dough mix to which you added water (flour, instant yeast, salt, other ingredients), a can of tomato-based pizza sauce to spread on the dough once you'd pressed and patted the dough onto a pan, stretching it from edge to edge, and a little can of grated cheese to sprinkle over the sauce. Then you'd bake it in a hot oven and pretend it resembled pizza. It was pretty bad. I didn't know Appian Way also made frozen pizzas.

    It's interesting how when Walter Brennan disguised his voice on an earlier show by speaking with an Asian accent some people commented it was racist, but when Buddy Hackett speaks with a Spanish accent nobody made any comments about it. I don't care one way or the other.........it's nothing more than an observation.

    At 5:54, Alan King jokingly asks if the contestants were the veterinarians for the Russian dogs. He was referring to the fact that the Russians were sending dogs into space as part of their space program. The first animal to orbit the earth was Laika in 1957; she died in space. King's quip was probably based on news that was quite recent at the time: a little over 3 weeks before this episode, two Russian dogs -- Bars and Lisichka -- died when the rocket that was to carry them into space exploded shortly after launch.
    Under the circumstances, King's joke was, IMO, in very bad taste. The laughter it got, especially from John Daly, is hard to fathom.

    John Daly is such a liar. I heard the woman say under her breath to John, " what about the meat?" and John sat right there and told Dorothy there was no meat in this product. And then he said that nothing was alive in it or derived from anything alive and that you would never see it walking around. Bold-faced lie. The last time I checked a cow or a pig walks around and a tomato is a fruit and it is alive. I can't stand cheaters. That's the quickest way to make me stop playing a game with someone, is if they cheat because that just takes all the fun out of it.

      Good catch. I didn't notice it the first time, but looking at it again, I see what you mean. John Daly usually takes a guest by the hand to position them on the spot and then guide them over to the desk. In this case, he holds Miss Hewson slightly above the wrist. And as she leaves, her left arm does dangle awkwardly at her side. I would suspect a birth condition or mild form of polio.

Not a very good synonym for sweater, so Arlene repeats "Bust" and then starts feeling herself on the her chest. The audience laughs and she finally responds, "soft" and everyone continues laughing hysterically.
