The Swiss guard saved the pope in the 1500s and the story is fascinating. During the French Revolution in the 1700s over 500 died protecting the pope in France. They don’t always wear the half plate and they are trained with all manner of guns etc
If I remember right this is year 1527 when Vatican was attacked. And Swiss Guard defended so long that Pope got out from building. I love history and Sabaton makes good music!
The Sack occurred in 1527. Still, the date you mention is equally if not more important; that's when the first Swiss mercenary company took service in the Vatican, marking the beginning of the Pontifical Swiss Guard, and making them the oldest professional army in the world. 1) 'Traditional Europe' did not exist for thousands of years. Or are you really going to slap antiquity, the 'Dark Ages', the Middle Ages, the New Age, etc all together casually? 2) revolutions are not inherently 'leftwing'. If anything the nation state ideals and meritocratic ideals that spawned from some of the revolitions including the french ones are distinctly rightwing nowadays. 3) Europe reached it's height in power and influence well post the French Revolution. And in no small part thanks to a lot of the ideas that were spread by the Glorious, the American, the French Revolution and the Bonapartise compromise. 4) Our decline is mostly due to us being retards that fought 2 World Wars among us, shattering our power followed by a complete decline as we gave up our ability to project power due to complacency. Both problems pre Revolutionary states, cultures and Empires have experienced as well. 5) If you refer to moral decline that too is a cycle we've gone through many times and is subjective to boot.

Die Garde verfügt sowohl über mittelalterliche Waffen, wie Schwert und Hellebarde, als auch über moderne Schusswaffen. Leider ist darüber nicht so viel bekannt.
