Fun Fact before Swiss Guard became the true bodyguards of the pope, the papal father had a variety of military organizations to protect him. Such as the Noble Guard, they were a ceremonial cavalry guard that protected the pope's apartment and escorted the pope's carriage, when the pope started using a car the Noble Guard stopped being a cavalry unit and solely a ceremonial guard closest to the pope. Next is the Palatine Guard, a part-time volunteer force that guarded the Vatican estates entrances and also performed ceremonial duties. Before the Vatican Gendarmerie became the Vatican's official police force they were also a ceremonial unit that wore bearskins and had similar roles to the Noble Guard. Both The Noble Guard and Palatine Guard were abolished in 1970 by Pope Paul VI due to the realization of the pope that he had too many ceremonial guards and they were only there for ceremonial purposes, not for his protection at the least, so he abolished the guard units and only kept the Swiss Guard and reforming the Papal Gendarmerie into a police force. After the Noble Guard and Palatine Guard left, the Swiss Guard were left to do all the ceremonial duties and the close protection of the pope.

The Swiss Guard are all active members of the Swiss Army and serve as true bodyguards, not just ceremonial ones, with modern rifles and pistols as well as their halberds. That being said, as far as a "functioning modern military" is concerned, they're just too small to pose any real deterrence to an invader. Swiss Guard or no, any moderately sized country that wanted to invade the Vatican could do so, if not for one major roadblock: Italy. Any invasion of the Vatican would first necessitate an invasion of Italy, and so it's their military (and the rest of NATO via Article 5) that really guarantee's the Vatican's national security
@@neilthorley1664Thanks I was wondering if they actually had rifles and other firearms instead of just midieval weapons to act like a policing force or something
They act as a security force for Papal officials, although Vatican City does have its own police for regular everyday crimes (and their own march! ruclips.net/video/Anp3BehR6Fs/видео.html)
The Swiss guard are real Swiss soldiers. And they are a elite. Furthermore they have all be roman catholics. I don't want to mess with one of this guys. It the same, like the beefeaters in GB, or the US Marine corps, the garde estrangere in France. Or the Wachbataillon des BmVg in Germany.
Yes, before they even get to the Vatican the Swiss Army requires them to go through a whole month of modern basic training then another month of Vatican specific security training before they are sworn to their 26 month term of duty in Rome. This is not a rag tag group of boys who are unaware of anything but their loyalty to the church.

great music. not oomp pah like other deutchies. colorful uniforms but a bit overdone with metal plates and helmets. funny snail march. great show to impress the faithful. even the clergy attending. but if the Pope has a god connection why does he need the Swiss guards? reminds me of Stalin who asked; how many divisions does the Pope have?
The Catholic leadership will see these young men as the protectors of their enclave and Catholics who swear to serve two to three years in a life oath to protect said town.
Their metal breast plates are designed to allow for a big belly ....... i.e. fat guards. It really should be re-designed and guards required to stay in good physical condition.
They would not even get to the Vatican if they did not get through a full month of boot camp with real Swiss training (no doubt many of the academy instructors feel that these young men need to be evaluated at a higher standard than most of their guard units)
You are right, but those are the ancient ceremonial uniforms. Hit them on any normal day and they will be dressed like modern soldiers or protective police.

You have to remember there was a time when one would wonder if the Vatican would be overthrown by a foreign invader (such as modern Italy for example)

Very cool
Do not be fooled. They are professional army.
Does the Vatican have a functioning modern military or is it all just customary?
