- HOW TO ADJUST POULAN MODEL 2150 CHAINSAW CARBURETOR. These are just suggestions, others might do it differently. Be Careful doing this. IF YOU SCREW IN THE LOW SCREW IT WILL RUN LEANER. UNSCREW THE LOW SCREW AND IT WILL RUN RICHER.
USE THE HIGH SCREW TO SET IDLE AND ALSO TOP END. DON'T FORGET THE IDLE ADJUST SCREW, THE BIG SCREW, TURN IT IN FOR FASTER IDLING AND TURN OUT FOR LOWER IDLE.
Great Job! People like you deserve praise for the help you spread online. This is type of learning is what Television promised, but money rules truth in corporate land. And "designed-in complexity" alienates most "would be" do -it -yourselfers. Help keep people smart. Bravo Dude!
Thanks for the vid. I got this saw three years ago. Never pulled it out for the first year, and when I did it never ran. I had people who said they could fix it, but they never could. All I did is screw them all in and then back out one and a half turns. Then a slight adjustment on the high and it works great. ....Then I ran out of gas. LOL. But I just wanted to say thanks. You were a big help.
+Dean you're welcome Dean, make sure you are subscribed
Thanks for the video! A tip for anyone who doesn't have a splined driver, or doesn't want to buy one, take a small hex-end driver and put a wad of duct tape in it. It'll turn those two splined screws well enough to do the job. Mark the tops of the screws with white-out or something so you can keep track of position, the driver might slip a bit. Worked well enough to get my 2050LE going!
Bro, you saved me! Great video. Turned the low screw a half turn and now she idles like new. Thank you!
Thanks for making this video. I thought my poulan needed a carb kit but all it needed was a new fuel line kit and carb adjustment. With out the owners manual I wasn't sure which screw did what. Your video took the guess work out of it . My old saw runs like a champ now .
If you own a 2150 how in the hell did you fish the suction fuel line through the hole in the tank? It's located 90 degrees behind the fuel tank cap where you can't get at it. I'd like to beat the crap out of the engineer that designed it.
Hi Gary,
I had the same thing happen to my Poulan Shark. I followed Donyboys video on how to rebuild the carb, and when I opened it up the little screen was full of dirt that was blocking gas from getting into the carburetor. Cleaned it out, put back together, it fired right up. DONYBOY, thanks for the advice and keep up the good work!.
Absolute novice at this. Your videos have my old Craftsman Chain-saw I inherited from my Grand-pa running like a champ now!He is no longer with us but that saw purrs like a kitten. Thanks for your patient and very informative videos, they are excellent!
you're welcome and sorry for your loss
Finally someone gets right to it. 1and a 1/2 turns out on both H and L to start.
Thanks for your responses. Rebuilt the hda268 carb with new kit, which didn't help. Removed all rubber hoses to check for cracks which there weren't any, then replaced. Replaced the fuel filter. Removed the top end engine to make sure it was worth fixing, then replaced piston ring and replaced with a new gasket. Had it running briefly under throttle without the muffler, but it refused idle.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I made a carb adjuster as you suggested and it worked great, the chainsaw is running like a new one. Thanks again for saving me time, money and frustration!
Thank you Donny. my craftsman was bogging bad and not idling good after a fuel line replacement and sitting for about a year I cleaned the carb cleaned the muffler but it was the Low adjustment now it's screaming again. appreciate it bud.
Excellent advice. I have an old Poulan Pro 222 that would not idle and bogged down when I attempted to throttle up the saw. I order the adjustment tool you suggested. I reset the low and high to one and one-half turns out. I had to make an additional adjustment of a quarter out on the low, a little adjustment on the high, and I increase the idle a bit. The saw idled well and it was quick to respond to the throttle. I cut several saplings and limbs without any issues. Thanks for the advice:-)
I generally adjust the low while at idle - turn right until bogs then turn left to bring it high go past the high until the sound changes to lower, that should do it, then adjust the idle speed until the chain stops moving, then set the high with a tachometer or just remember as you turn it in it will go faster (could blow the engine), but generally 1.5 to 2.5 turns on the high would be fine, if you want it to run slower then turn it left (out), it may add some power but run a tad slower while not cutting but while cutting it will have enough gas to have good power, if it bogs under a load then turn it in (right) a tad..
Jim Richard where do i start from the seat how many turns out l and h
Video may be 12 years old but it’s an excellent video! Thanks for the tips.. worked like a charm!
I fixed it! It was the Walbro HDA268 carb non-replaceable jet. I followed someone elses fix with the same problem on the same saw, purchased a new HDA203 carb which is basically the same carb with the fuel inlet and choke rods in a different place for less than half the price. I had to re-route my fuel line for clearance, and reuse the old choke rod since it was positioned for the CS-600P choke linkage. After a few pulls, it idled and ran fine.
Donny, Thank you for the great video, I got my poulan 4018 dialed in perfect thanks to your great video. Your the best
Followed Donyboys's guide to tune the L and H (and earlier to tear it down, check it and rebuild it), load tested it and its running the same as before! Carb bolt mounting problem is contributing a bit, but will be gone once I get the CS-8000 bolts and nuts. The guides are great! Thanks for the help!
My unit ran perfectly until after I replaced fuel lines and a mechanic thought it needed a carb adjustment. He really fouled it up. I was about to pitch my 16 year-old Poulan because it was running like crap. No power and would not idle. A friend let me use his new Poulan and the chain kept coming off due to of that easy bar adjustment. No way do I want a new chainsaw with that feature. Anyway, I referred to your video and now my trusty old Poulan is working like a champ again. Thank you!
We have this same saw 15 years old,cut atleast 40 cord or more of wood, started running bad, i rebuilt the carb, ran better but still had issues, turned out the intake manifold had loosened itself off, tightened that and its like a brand new saw
Great video L and H is now in place and my 40 dollar craftsman saw will now idle. I myself never new what L and H was lol Now the only problem i had after watching the video was adjusting them, they had no slots for screwdriver. U have to have a special tool lol. I used a small flat head screwdriver and a 16-14 butt connector Its blue in color I shoved the metal center piece out of it with a ice pick and then shoved the flat head screwdriver into it and then used in on the low and high mixture screws the butt connector when shoved into the screws grab the groves so that u may turn them. I priced this special tool on ebay and they wanted around 12 to 50 dollars for it I don't think so lol thanks man again
Mr Knott---I have the same problem but could you tell me what a butt connector is?---my imagination is running wild! Thanks
Mine was only a couple dollars or 15-20 for a set of different ones. Splined, Pac man, Double d, Single D&Hex
I got the kit off Amazon it has the whole new carb, fuel lines, air filter, spark plug, two fuel filters.and adjustment tool for $20 :/
Blue butt connectors are sold crimp type spicing on electrical wires. Very common product found in most any hardware electrical or home center
I've had one of these since 1997. I've never done anything to it except abuse it. It's by far the most reliable $149 saw I've ever seen. I run suicide chain (anti kickback and depth guides removed) on it and it just jeeps going. It cuts dirt metal rock and I just replace the chain when it's toothless or snapped. It's strictly a junker for me. My Husqvarna's Stihls and Jonsered never get abused. I'll have to try tuning up the ole beast. Thanks
Apparently the one armed man who killed "The Fugitives" wife, filed the drags, rakes, depth guide (anti kick guides) off the chain of his saw too. But that was before the days of the chain brake. :)
Thanks for the reply .. took the cover off, air filter was lookin bad, cleaned it up .. the rest looked real good ...turned up the L idle just a tad ... your videos are great.
i like this guy ,,no vulgar language ,, very detailed
Oh who gives a flying fuck about vulgar language you candy assed puss fart?
Awesome tutorial! I followed your advise and within 30 min I had my poulan 1800 purring like a lion. Those little carbs sure are finicky! Even a 1/8 turn on the L threw mine out of adjustment.
donyboy, Your videos are great! They are very instructive an the audio is high quality unlike most others.Keep Up the good work.Thanks. This video prevented me from tossing ny saw out!
+kevin Harmony thanks kevin, I went to HD in 2010
Thanks for the video, I race and tune 125cc 2 stroke bikes but the chainsaw is a whole different animal! Just need some fine tuning and its good! Your instructions are the best!
thanks donyboy, I followed your steps and now my Craftsman chainsaw is working great! new fuel lines and adjusted the carb....
Awesome video... have a Poulan 2375 that won't stay running. Already changed the plug, filter and brand new gas mixture. Will adjust the screws like you showed and see what happens.
yes clockwise, i adjust the H screw by top rpm or sound and then turn out 1/8 of a turn so it's not too lean, if it bogs down i turn out, if it's too rich or slow i turn it in
I switched from Poulain to Stihl a while ago but now I can fix it too now. Merci!
thanks for your vid i got a saw at a pawn shop for $5 needed new fuel lines and carb adjusted thanks for showing me how to do it right
That is a great tip and I will remember it to use on my Poulan Pro saw. It should work on my Stihl saw also which is having problems cranking. Thanks for the tip and I hope you all are having a Blessed weekend.
also a very good idea to check the spark screen on the muffler for carbon plugging , this will restrict the exhaust this slips by a lot of peoples thoughts when they have a bad running saw. use care to not adjust the carb mixture too lean on any 2 cycle engine always err on the slightly rich mixture side
Another place to look for carb fuel/air mixture adjustment is in the manual. I know that the Homelite I recently worked on followed a slightly different procedure. Great video by the way. I will definitely refer to this video for future adjustments.
How is that one done
@jazz82z u can turn down the idle screw, if that still doesn't do it the clutch springs may need to be replaced
I just finished solving my problem by adjusting the Hi carb screw out another full turn to allow more fuel to enter at full throttle. It's now about 2-1/2 turns out from fully seated and saw runs pretty well. The above video says very little about the Hi carb screw adjustment and could be improved by addressing this issue.
@bbplayer546 could be a host of problems but firast check the idle screw then make sure the intake boot , if it has one, isn't cracked. they tend to crack on the stihls and cause that problem
Not sure anyone mentioned this but that carb adjust that’s splined is less than 2 dollars at Amazon. Like 3.55$ or so. Amazing. Better than making your own. Just to clarify: when someone says they’re going to turn in the low screw they’re speaking of two screws side by side and let’s say it’s the left screw turning it in would be clockwise and the the right screw would be turning ccw (turning in to towards the other screw)? Trying to make sense mentally. My interpretation yes?
thanks donny boy your videos are great and helped me fix a chain saw someone gave me. 5 dollars in parts and it runs fine
+Keith McKnight you're welcome, make sure you are subscribed
+donyboy73 Do you think it possible that my poulan 33cc idle is leaner from factory. I know my 4 stroke start easier in the cold with lean idle. But that chainsaw stall like my 4 stroke atv did with the setting to lean. It start fast but cant idle for more than 30 second. Except that it work fine... My uncle is a chainsaw mechanic and his poulan as the same issue.. While all his stihl he got ton all idle fine.. So i suspect it just an engine weakness maybe.
Your tips, and the required routine maint., I've at least managed to get it to start not for long, but it's better then nothing. A unit I borrowed, which the owner does not maintain, but the free price is right. Thanks again. Narragansett Bay
Donyboy73 is the best. I have been intimidated by small engines for the last time! The USN taught me a lot about Electronics, but 2-Cycles have always kicked my B***. Thanks to the Small Engine Dr, my Poulan 2160LE is running hot, and ready for the backyard. Thanks a million, Don =]
hey you're welcome
I have attempted it, that is how I found your videos. They are a great help, very much appreciated. If you ever make it down to Texas I will buy lunch, you like Mexican food?
Thanks a lot!!! When I adjust the carburator I take off the spade and the chain, that is quite more safe. During the fine adjust y adjust it with everything.
thanks, i had a talon ac3100, with a walbro t439 carb, watched your video, set low and hi to 1 1/2 turns, and away it went, thanks
I mainly work on weedeaters and lawnmowers and only recently got my own personal chainsaw. I got a Poulan 25DA and no matter how much I tuned it it would not start. Your video makes me feel kinda…. Awkward because i usually think of myself and a good small engine repair guy but couldn’t do this one without your video.
So for this I say “Thank you for the video.”
@1972porkchop i agree, if u go husky u will need to go with the pro models, they are good i.e. 575
Thanks for the video. I had mine running like new in 15 minutes. This was after a week of struggling with it. Thanks!
I ran into the spline issue a while back, I heard of a couple people melting the end of a bic pen and molding it to the screw to adjust. I found a deep well 5/32 12 point socket works also. It's not perfect but it's good enough to get the saw back on it's feet without waiting a week to do it.
Appreciate the advice. My saw starts and stalls when given gss. Suggestions? Thankd
This guy has made so many helpful videos. Thanks.
@ethanolsucks666 did gas pour out before? loosen the fuel cap then tighten it again in case the cap isn't venting. don't prime it too much or it will do what u mentioned. try that and let me know before going further
Thanks to all for a great job on helping others with your know how on everything. This is my first time at this. I have a 1950 model poulan wood shark it is about 10 years old. I went to use it one day and when I started it it started fine but when I pressed the trigger it bogged out on me. 10 times latter and pissed off. I replaced the fuel lines/ filter /cleaned carb/ screen on muffler/ fresh gas/ good primer bulb adj carb. It does the same thing. it starts and runs press trigger it bogs HELP.
@pdrom100 as long as the line fits on the connector i wouldn't worry about it, make sure though the lines are tight on the connector. also check carb adjustment
Also, 2 stroke engines love to flood. As soon as the engine gurgles even a little when starting it cold, take the choke to half way. 2 or 3 pulls with the choke on when it shouldn't be will flood it and keep it from starting. Sorry if you already knew all this, just suggesting problems I see the most often.
@mexicanstandup not sure, but i set it so the chain doesn't turn, also H screw start at 1 1/2 and low at 1 turn out
it,s amaing that everyone asks the same questions, over n over, i just read to 5 years back, and found enough info to cover adjustments to crank seals, vent caps, junk carbs, dried diaphram,s my shit prolly still wont start, but before i go buggin some cat tryin to do a solid n put out info. i will read the comments, then getbusy. remarkable patiance there Donyboy. got a couple sweet old mac,s one an electric start. should be fun.
Thanks for the info. I just picked up a Poulin 3818, has spark but does not even attempt to start. I sprayed ether in where the spark plug goes still nothing, I cleaned the carb, still nothing. Any ideas what the problem may be?
I just rebuilt my zama carb today. The slightly shorter screw with the blunt end is the H screw.
@RickciD i would have to physically see it, also check that the coil isn't rubbing on the flywheel
Continued from previous post.
I also replaced the primer/purge bulb. One side of the bulb goes to the tank vent and the other side goes to the carb. The filter line goes to the carb also. My problem is I do not know which barb on the carb is to be connected to filter line and which is to be connected to the bulb
I have longer carb mounting bolts and nuts (which go to the CS-8000) coming since one mounting thread is stripped in the rear handle assembly which is probably causing an air leak between the carb and intake boot. Rear handle assembly which includes the gas tank, is like a $65 part alone. The HDA268 carb has a semi-fixed jet (non-replaceable), so if you start having my problem, you'll likely need a $115 new carb. The Echo CS-600P is a beast, but its expensive if something goes bad.
Wow very confused I never heard of adjustment of L jet at full throttle! Did you mean to say H jet? Thanks for your time and expertise!🙏🏻
I'm a big fan. And love ur vids. Lots of info. I have a poulan p3816 and does say high rpms should be 13,000 how yo get there? I'm at 3000. Of course tryed increase h screw while holding down throttle but nothing? Cleaned carb too
The last one minute was the best part of this 1 1/2 turns is basic setting on both screws .
Thanks for the help. I just need to know the amount of turns OUT for L & H and 1 1/2 turns did (no adjustment needed after either).
@MrPalvis 1st take off the muffler and look at the piston and rings to make sure they aren't scored, it could be that ur compression is too low, check that first, it doesn't cost anything
I have a Poulan 2150 which I have just replaced the spark plug, carb, fuel lines, fuel and air filters, and put in new non ethynol gas and I can only keep in running by pushing the choke in and out for a split second while trying to run wide open. Tried adjusting L and H right now both at 1.5 turns out. Got any suggestions?
Thank you for the video. I have a 2150 that struggles to idle. Seems to have gotten worse over time. I have replaced air filter and spark plug. I swapped out some fuel lines/filter with some out of a 'universal' repair kit. Can those lines be small enough that they are not getting enough fuel to the carb? Took out the 'walbro' carb and cleaned it. Did not seem that dirty, but cleaned anyway. Seems like the carb just needs to be tuned, but not sure where to start. Thanx!
Can I adjust the carb on a Farmhand 2900 using this technique? It won't idle and has lost power despite new spark plug, cleaning air filter, etc. Great video, thanks.
feel if the compression is good. u can take off muffler and look inside to see if rings aren't scored. maybe adjust the carb again
I have a 42cc Craftsman chain saw . I took the carb apart cleaned it all out .With the needles L & H out. Should i be able to blow thru the low side hole of the needle valve like i can the high side ? The high side blows thru easy. Also on any carb video if you know the factory number of turns out to start any saw you should say it . Thanks much .
@JustMeNoOther have you tried adjusting the carburetor?
Great vids btw .. I`m learning lots .. Mine runs fine for about 10-20min. into the job ..then it stalls at idle everytime.
Hi , I have one of the first Poulan Wildthing 18" 42 c.c. saws with a Walbro carb. I have used, and abused this saw and actually cut firewood with it . It runs strong and is very dependable . I know it can't last forever so I'm looking at Husqvarna as a replacement . Everyone tells me they are the same saw . Is this true ? If so which doo you reccomend . Thanks for sharing !
Is there a video that simply explains the screws and there affect on the saw?Does turning the Low idle screw in add fuel or does it reduce fuel? Same for the High idle screw. All the videos seem to simply say turn them until it sounds good? like WTF? Does anyone understand what turning out ( counter clockwise ) does to the carburetor?
Dan I have Poulan P3314 I tried everything did like you described Clean carb, replace fuel lines new gas, air filter , new plug compression 105, spark present but it did not start, Can you tell me what is the problem i have to check to start it up.
you may have too much oil in your gas. mix it 40:1 = 4 litres of gas to 100ml of oil.
u may have to remove the muffler and clean it out too.
the other thing is that the Low screw may be turned out too much thus making it run richer. hope this helps.
Thanks, now off to the garage to get mine to run smooth, along with a couple beers :)
Chaps, helmet, no booze!
Gary, I have a new Poulan Pro 42, starts easy enough......cuts fine, but after you stop cutting, and you let it idle until you get to the next log, it will stall every time, it starts back up easy, but always having to start it every time.....what can I do to fix that? Thanks Jim
Dony, Your video are great. I'm almost there. I replace the gas cap, the purger, the diaphrams and the hoses are correct on my 2150. I turned the H& L all the way in then backed them off. Its starts, but then craps out after a few seconds. I also pulled the muffler & cleaned the screen. The only thing i didnt do was replace the punch outs and pins. I even added a little more gas to the mixture because I thought there was to much oil. Any help will be appreciated.
@poordueto401k i believe the filter line from the tank goes on the top connector of the carb
Great instructions. 5 STAR! Got a question about a fuel line tank on a gas trimmer.
What material do you use to seal the fuel line where it exits the top of the tank? This thing has leaked fuel since new and I've tried to seal it with silicon but the fuel and oil mix seems to leak through and it usually drips enough to get all over me when I use it.
Thanks and keep up the good work!
Hi, I have a craftsman chainsaw, and have changed the piston ring, checked the compression, cleaned the carb and put a new carb kit, checked the spark plug and sparks good, had put new air filter and new gas filter .... it starts well but when I pull the trigger to full, it drowns, if have ideas I will take them. Thanks.
can you explain which way leans and riches the carb(ie.. by turning out the L/H is it leaning or enriching fuel flow)?
would be nice to understand what the screws actually do, i have a 2150 and rebuilt the carb but it is being a PITA.. will not stay running nor will it accelerate with full throttle, just bogs and dies..
Thanks for taking time to make the video, I bought a 16 in poulan from local hardware and used it for maybe a hour or so total running time, never ran right and then would start but then bog out and die as soon as I squeezed the trigger, then finally wouldn't start at all. Not sure what is going on.
Thank you very much for all of your videos! I have a Poulan 2250 chainsaw. When it starts it races and the chain moves. I believe that the idle (L) screw needs to be turned down. However both the L and H screws have those colored stops on them and will only turn about 1/4 turn. Do I need to remove those stops? If so, how do I remove them? Thank you very much.
k thanks .........and one more thing the choak is juest the one screw and u just adjust it till it idles nice and smooth and i did not mean to dug u with the questions
Hi ;
Great video.
I have a Poulan chain which I can not for the love of me get it to start or if it starts for a few seconds and then dies. I have checked carb., spark, plug, new gas and nothing. I have a second chain saw identical to that one and no issues. Can the head lose compression. What should the compression be on these. Can not visually see if the bore is scored or the rings are stuck. I have read that on these chains saws the piston rings get stuck closed and do not provide enough compression to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@This0is0pointless might need to turn out the screws just a bit more and possibly replace the carb kit
yes, I also use Mercury Powertune engine cleaner which I buy at a marina
Hi buddy. thanks for the tips. ill try it but what im thinking is wrong with my baja 5b its the same wollabo carb it dose not want to fire up at all got blisters trying to start it theres not enough spark to the plugs
great how to video. my Poulan 2150 hasn't been run in couple years and i just moved from sea level to about 7300 elevation. so, wondering how i need to set this for higher altitude. i removed the L/H guards and re-set them to 1.5 trns out and started from there, adjusting. i am still not getting it to run at all. checked plug and have spark. new gas too. what else can i do?
Thanks.. Do you know if the wood shark models have the idle screw that needs to be adjusted.. I see the 2 holes and it does have different screws but was not sure which screw to turn.. I will try it out and let you know. thanks
@AnoseFull try adjusting the carb you might need the tool in the video
Great video. What is the purpose of the H high screw? Have you worked with Makita chain saws at all? I have one that is real hard to start
When you say "in" all the way you mean clockwise, correct? In all the way then 1.5 turn out. Then WOT to adjust low screw "in" or "out?" WOT adjusting low screw till at maximum RPM...how do you know when to stop adjusting low screw? Will it peak rpm then start slowing down when you've turned too much? Thank you
I have the Poulan 2900, It has been used very little. I have replaced the fuel line. I have disassembled the carburetor to clean. Fuel filter is clean. It has fresh gas mixed 40 to 1. It will not run. The only way I can get it to fire is with carburetor cleaner. Any hints or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for the video. It definitely helped me get my 2075 w/ Walbro tuned up and running well. I did have a question. My saw seems to be dispensing an excessive amount of bar-oil. From your experience is this due to a failing oil pump? Thanks!
Great video. You make it look easy. I have an older Homelite XL Automatic UT50156. I can't get it to start. The gas drips out of the muffler. Could you point me in the reight direction on how to get it started and then adjust it so it runs smoothly please.
Keep up the great videos.
Andy
My poulan is having a lot of carbon build up to the point where the carbon is getting wedged in the sparkplug gap. What adjustment do i make. I already but a spline adjustment tool.
