Nice video Paolo. I love the sound of the BASS on the Juno 60 and 106. Thanks for getting me into Italo Disco. I love all those tunes! I appreciate the "How To" videos the most. Take care and have a wonderful week. Sam. :)
Fantastic Video, these are all super useful! I enjoyed trying it out on my own Juno while watching - it's super cool of you to walk through your patch creation process.
I simply can’t get over the fact how such a simple one oscillator synth sounds so GOOOOD! I only got the software version (tal uno lx) that sounds kinda similar as far as I heard online, but i absolutely LOVE the sound of it. Your videos are super inspiring to my music, so please keep them up and coming!
I just want to hug this guy! Perhaps it's his accent or something, but he just seems like such a nice fellow. Haha I love the simplicity of the Roland Juno-60.
Thanks Paolo, that was fantastically helpful. Even though I'm used to subtractive synths, have you going through this with your level of experience was much better than me fiddling for ages still not making making anything "Italo" sounding! P.s. If you ever do other Italo songs can you do fun fun- colour my love & taffy - I love my radio.Love the synths in those!
Nice video and the Roland sounds great. I have playing around with my Arturia Minibrute a couple of evenings now and I must say that the dedicated Env for the filter (that the Roland is missing) is really useful and gives a lot more sound tweaking abilities. But the Roland is still the disco bass king.
So good! Would you be able to share(at least in comments) what filter/envelope settings how to get a nice rounded bass synth on the BSII ? If you know this. Thanks. I've come close but still not as smooth as I want it.
I don't have a BSII at the moment, but you might be interested in these videos of mine ruclips.net/video/3L_VQHSRMjg/видео.html - ruclips.net/video/CMHelMkdy0Q/видео.html
This is so great! I love this groovy stuff, but can't seem to find much of it for listening online. Does anybody have any Albums or Artists to recommend for some listening? Anything is appreciated!! : )
Any examples of arpeggio being expanded to more than two notes? I imagine a multitrack recorder with digital clock output for multi tracking multiple beats in perfect sync.
I went and made a patch based on this on the Cobalt8x and it came out surprisingly similar. The trick was the SVF filter set to bipolar (or relative but not legacy). and also another trick was not leaving the cutoff at absolute zero but rather moving it a tad to affect the envelope just a hair in the right direction to mimic the sound (the first patch you made, the italo disco style) Sounds lovely on the cobalt! There's a difference but it's merely sideways rather than and upper/lower relationship.
Hi, Paolo! You wrote Evgeniy from Russia! I have a suggestion for you: why don't You do in the style of classic 80s spacesynth like Laserdance and Koto in the near future? It will be another interesting style on Your channel! Thank you in advance!
Juno 60, and the other junos too, but IMO esp 60 (and 6 of course), can be so versatile. It's one of those examples that breaks the rule that synths with kinda "poor sound shaping options", can't be good enough..Yeah, it has only one osc, (the sub osc can't be considered as a free one osc), one env (though it can be shared..), one lfo which is not exactly state of the art, and i mean at it's time, 1982 not today, and if these aren't enough, the osc isn't a VCO, but just a DCO, which isn't consider as a true analog, for a lot of people..(i'm not included, BTW..;). But Roland did break this rule, and make the juno 60 a great sounding synth, which does not only sound and looks beautiful, but can be used by a novice almost as easily as a pro, and in fact i think it's kinda "difficult" to make it sound bad, in a way of speaking.. But it's a shame that the price for it is often a bad sounding joke, yet it's an amazing synth..
Aw Great demo and instruction. Question: are you using a separate arp unit or the one built in to the Juno? As I don’t own a Juno I have no idea if it has an arp function. I have a Sequential Take5 that I love and my 1st synth. And I want to create Italo-disco. I am heavily influenced by Moroder. And I can’t understand that pulse bass pattern. But your demo was fantastic. Happy belated birthday btw. And thanks for being here!
The Juno-60 (but not the later 106) has an arpeggiator built-in. It was released just before MIDI was adopted as a standard, so that arpeggiator was crucial for sequencing sounds that stayed on the beat. Since it was so easy to use (just press or hold a key or three, you didn't need to be a Grade 7 pianist) it helped give birth to a whole genre, and got us all used to repetitive loop-based music that took over the world.
Would you say the Juno 60 is one of your favourite synths? I'm considering picking a Juno 6, but for the price I could buy say an Alpha Juno and maybe a DX7iifd. The Juno 60 seems to make its way into almost all of your videos so it must be a favourite or something ;)
I'd suggest you to go with a pair of JU-06 modules as I did rather than chasing vintage stuff. First of all you'll get way more capable setup than an original one - 8 voices instead of 6 and better computer integration such as patches back-up as well as digital audio interface. As a matter of fact time works against a hardware so as one man has wisely noticed that it's getting harder and harder to maintain the vintage gear in working order. I picked my JU-06 for just a little more than 200USD each in mint condition. Also Roland recently came up with decent yet very powerful gear such as JD-XA and System -8 synths which can reproduce all the 80's sounds just had down.
One audio electronics designer's wife said: "If to keep looking at a glowing vacuum tube for quite a while then it might seem that there is somebody inside of it." In fact, any analog synthesizer has no "soul" unless one is plugged to a decent reverb/delay cause the "soul" lives in harmonics. The richer harmonic spectrum the "warmer" "soul" is. But again, all the good reverbs in this world are digital. In other words, in order to get a good sound you must treat it digital.
I love the Juno 60 and it shows up in almost all my tunes as well. I know the Juno 6 is the same without the presets. The Juno series is great. You'll be in heaven when you play them. Enjoy! Sam.
Is there a science to the actual patterns? I wanna program bass patterns but these arpeggio patterns are really basic. Down up down up down up down up...
+Chris Topher but that's all staccato. When do you know when to sustain the notes etc. I guess talking more funk/r&b than italo. The bass line in "Thriller" & "Off the Wall" sounds funkier than a root/5th or root/octave italo bass line. I wanna know how to do those patterns.
Ecks FromVA From what I gather from my own r&b endeavours, theres alot of taking apart the chords, while keeping them connected to each other via the melody. so 13578 + any melody notes would work, usually alot of root octave work
+SynthMania - It's really great that you are now making videos dedicated to specific viewer questions. Thanks!

Right? The low end on these synths is out of control!
Great sounding keyboard and super tutorial. Thanks as always and welcome back Paolo!
oh yes my favorite, thank you so much Paolo! 😀 this'll help anyone who needs it.
Very welcome! Hope it helps a bit..
SynthMania thank you for going into alot of detail with many examples. perfect! lots of gratitude. thank you again.
I know Im kinda off topic but do anyone know of a good site to stream new tv shows online?
@Remy Miller flixportal =)
@Oliver Xavier thanks, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it !
I just want to hug this guy! Perhaps it's his accent or something, but he just seems like such a nice fellow. Haha

Well done. Instant Italo feeling.
Wow, useful info. Loving the step by step here!
That sounds incredible!
Killer bassline !

Very educational, sounds great!
Thanks!
tHANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH !!!! 😀
very good,
we want more italo-disco video.
awesome your clips!!I copied this basssound editing on the Arturia jun 6V and almost got the same result instantly !huray..thanks Paolo amici!
Great video, thank you!
Thanks!!! I downloaded the plug in but it sound nice just after watch this video!
thanks a lot. really inspiring
Very informative and useful. Haven't got the Juno 60, must try it on my Polysix instead. :-) Thanks.
The bass on the juno 60 is unparelled.
Es posible un Vst que tenga el BASS de Junio 60 en buena calidad??
Italo! Thanks!
Great tutorial, as always! :-D
Thank you!
You are Genius! I try to do it with pc synths
could you do try and remake some yazoo patches?

Ciao Paolo, can you give us some hints for italo disco bass for the minimoog too? 🙏🙏🙏
This is so great! I love this groovy stuff, but can't seem to find much of it for listening online. Does anybody have any Albums or Artists to recommend for some listening? Anything is appreciated!! : )

Can you show us please how to recreate the lead synth of Video - Somebody? :)
Any examples of arpeggio being expanded to more than two notes? I imagine a multitrack recorder with digital clock output for multi tracking multiple beats in perfect sync.
Italo forever
Hello Paolo, Could you do a demo of how to get 80's snares sounds reverb? It's difficult to adjust plate reverbs. Thanks!
Could you do this with Roland VST ? I mean, sync and live performance ?
Sweet!

+SynthMania - Have you ever tried the CYCLONE ANALOGIC Bass and Drum modules, please?
Nop, I have not tried them
+SynthMania - ok, no problem.
Paolo! Just a quick question if you can answer?Do you have a Roland JX-3P? If so could you do a video demonstrating that?
good

+SynthMania - Is the CHORUS fx 'noisy' on your Juno, please?
No, luckily not so noisy on this Juno
+SynthMania - My Juno 6 did have a noisy CHORUS, but an engineer friend swapped it with a chip from a Juno 60 (so it is quiet now!).

What about ju 06A
Sometime do some entries on Wendy Carlos of "Switched-on Bach," "Clockwork Orange," "The Shining," etc.
My favorite! :)

MSM5500 nah I had a ju06 and I didn't like it, I can't stand virtual analog, just doesn't work for me, it has no organic quality to it, no soul

i wonder which kind of analog synths have you used if it needs reverb/delay to get soul
pablo the beast..
..legend 💃😊
Has anyone managed to get this to work on a ROLAND JU-06A cant do it for the life of me.
SynthMania : Rose Magic is similiar as Kim Wilde Cambodia :-)
