- WELCOME to another episode of Retroversy. Truth be told, there was a bit of a production hell with this one, but hopefully, you'll like it all the same! :D
VERY Special Thanks to Foxburrito for the logo, character sprites and everything else I need for whatever in the world. Visit her page on www.behance.ne...
More to come! Look forward to it!

I do not own this game licence nor it's assets. I guess that would be Nintendo. No su plz, ninty.
I'll have you know I beat pokemon mystery dungeon and only cried for 20 minutes.
Anaru_ Damn, step right in, Sir!
THATS HARDER THAN BRUSHING YOUR TEETH AND THEN DRINKING ORANGE JUICE
Purpleboye_ ha! I only cried for 40 XD
I beat pokemon mystery dungeon.
Yeah so?
And I didn't cry at all!
Darn come right in!
The first time I beat it I was devastated.
Who s here after mistery dungeon remake announcement
Me. I found this guy by looking at the trailer
@@selestielwolf7949 Aww! That's super nice to hear

*SPOILERS*
I just want to bring up a pint you didn't say. The whole feeling you are part of community comes in to play when you are forced out of the town. It makes you feel more betrayed and sad.
Yeah, you're very right there.^^
You think this one made you cry? The sequel goes out of it's way to flat out CRUSH your heart
Oh yeah, I know. I played them all (Not finished Super yet), and.. well.. All of them so far have been soul-rendering. Jesus, it's like masochism at this point, because I KNOW I'll cry like there's no tomorrow.
That's part of why I love these games so much (maybe even more than the main series)
I love rougelike dungeon crawlers, and I love even more that it's premise is everything I ever wanted about pokemon (a game that is more about the pokemon themselves rather than the humans)
***** Yeah, I adore the fact that it's more about the pokemon than it is the trainers. It's awesome
Ohhh you have NO idea
@@Focie
Did/will you cover the other games
One of my favorite things in this game was how you could se where all of the pokemon you befriended lived, and you could unlock certain events from having certain pokemon, like the 3 legendary birds
You know.. That's a really good point. Maybe I should've mentioned that. Thank you :)
@@Focieyou are welcome
@@BananaFrostHorseCaveI don’t think he was thanking you but ok take credit 😂
@@Absolewtly he was thanking me. I was just 7 years late to responding
You know it's serious, when the silent Protagonist starts to talk.
This was the first Pokémon game I ever played. I played this before I played any main series game, so Blue Rescue Team has a special place in my heart
I totally get that! The first in any series will be super important to you!
Me too
Without watching the video first ill list 10 reasons off the top of my head why theyre miles better than the main series
1) An actual story
2) Actual difficulty and satisfying achievements
3) Actual strategy needed
4) Super expressive and well written characters that match their appearance in a charming way
5) The music, oh GOD the music is so good no matter where you are
6) playing as a powerful monster instead of some wimpy kid on the sidelines barking orders
7) So. Much. Content. So much hours of playtime you could sink into this game and not even be halfway done. None of it feels half assed
8) More than just four possible ways to attack, item play makes things very creative
9) Very aesthetically pleasing art style and world building
10) Will make little kids cry at the ending guaranteed
SeaWyrm you understand it well but I think you mistyped 10 it’ll make anyone invested with the story cry.
I only cried when we were leaving as fugitives and Caterpie and the others were saying goodbye :|
Wha? The game isn't hard and there's no strategy involved whatsoever. Like, take Rayquaza- he isn't hard, he's just so strong compared to any of the pokemon you can use that the only way to win is spam reviver seeds
This game’s writing is so good I didn’t even need to understand English to feel things
11) You can obtain all of the Pokemon by yourself
12) You can obtain rare tm as much as you want
13) You can remember Pokemon moves by free
14) MO arent annoying anymore
Man, this game makes me cry so much. When I was a 11 year old kid, and now at 22. The violins in the fairwell, and the fugitive rip my heart up every time. My first playthrough, my Charmander friend, I'll never forget how kind and expressive he was. It kills me every time.
Dude! YES! 100%. It always gets an emotional reaction from me no matter how many times I play it!
This video: And the sequel is even better
Explorers video: I think I prefer the first game
Nice video though, I can't choose my favourite between Explorers and Super
Johannes heheh, sorry. One of those times where I felt the ending made up for it so much that I started to forget the pitfalls the second game had in its writing.
Thank you so much for watching though. I really appreciate it. I can't wait to play Super. I'm halfway through Gates, and will go Super some time after. So many say super is amazing, and I can't wait!
Just picked up this game, and so far I️ like it some people didn’t like it for some reason
@@Focie you think the first game has better writing than the second? I found the first one to be pretty barebones compared to second, storywise that is.I also found it way to cliche and cheesy(not that the second one wasn't). The second one felt more like a long journey and the amount of arcs actually gave me more time to immerse myself in that world. I haven't played PMD 2 in years so I don't remember the script that well, but what is it that you didn't like about the story?
@@Thomas.c4647 Oh I like the story just fine. What I mean is that the story is WAY better in the second one, but the writing is pretty atrocious.
The first game is barebones as all heck, but it doesn't stop and give you flashbacks to stuff that happened literally 5 minutes ago.
The second game does that all the time. Plus it gives you the solution to puzzles before you're even given a chance to solve them.
It's due to these things that I say that the second game has better story, but worse writing.
@@Focie I see, thanks for clearing it up. Great video BTW. These PMD games don't get the love they deserve.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is the best series ever (in my opinion)! The second game in the series was the first pokemon game I ever had, and I think it was the first one to make me cry too!
the endings tend to hit you like a sack if bricks for sure
This game is extremely underrated tbh, I have the original on my ds and I still don't have a lot of the legends... I've had it for about 7 years
I absolutely adore this game
I literally have all unless if deoxys is fck obtainable my younger self had that dog in him!
I'm glad I got to watch your video. Brought back a lot of good memories. Thank you.
Thank you. I used a lot of your music as background. I love your descriptions too
I just logged into my save file with a platinum rank of 5000, and walking around listening to the music really feels like a home. I still remember the same bond with me being Charmander and my partner Mudkip. This game was my first introduction to pokemon video games, and I truly love its charming nature.
You and me both. It's hard to beat a game like this in pure charm, even if some of that charm is cheesy as all hell.
Glad you liked it so much :D
A story of a chosen one that was made correctly.
Especially before the Magma Cavern run, where you stay still and thinking to be a hero but Lombre tells you that you can rely the ones from this world and takes grant that maybe this time will may be different but then they need help and then YOU'RE TEAM LIGHT UP EVERYONE! THE TIMING WERE PERFECT!!!
Damn man.. Listening to my all time favorite game be analized like that and just thinking back to the times I had with my squirtle.. It made me fucking sob for me wanting to be a charmander again. I wanted to hug my squirtle and go on an adventure all over again. Its why I cannot wait for the remakes to make me sob all over again it makes me miss by buddy squirtle and when I just hear that goddamn musical masterpiece of a soundtrack I can't help but break down in tears for my partner.. The trudge to fight all the Legendary birds and our trip to evolve and reach max level. And to even then still love the continuation of the post game.. Fuck man.. I just want to get a squirtle plushie and hug the fuck out of that thing and just cry in relief that I found him again.. After all these years..
My team is also a combination of fire and grass (Treecko and Charmander) but I called it "Team VeganMeat" 😅
Team VeganMeat?! That's god damn awesome! Hahahah! Perfect name!
Focie thanks dude😂😂😂
Cubone and Todadile. Named boneheads.
I named mine "Team Dungeoners"
@@Taterr__Tott how did you even fit that
9:00 the chills set in. Pulling in my memories from the game and IRL then musicing it in. Man, you got me!
Just gotta say, I really do enjoy Pokemon Mystery Dungeon so much more than the main series. I don't want the main series to go anywhere, but my loyalty to the several iterations of Team Vivatious is rock solid. ;µ;
Haven't seen a good retrospective of Blue Rescue Team, thankfully you're here to fix that!
Aww. Thank you so much. That's really nice to hear. If you've got the patience for it, a friend of mine, Seafoam Gaming, made an hour-long retrospective of this game too. He goes much more in depth than I did, and focuses on different things than I did, but nevertheless, thank you very much for the nice comment :D
This was the first game to ever make me cry, and all the PMD games still do every time I play the story. The music, the gameplay, and the story are all reasons why Blue Rescue Team and DX are my favorite game of all time
YES! YES! Another youtuber made a video on PMD! :D Really awesome video that pretty much expressed every major point regarding the emotion perfectly. It's not too often youtubers made videos on PMD, let alone a retrospective/review. Heck, I thought when I made my PMD RRT retrospective that I would be the only one to do so for years due to how rarely people talk about it, but it makes me happy to see that I'm no longer the only one. Great work! :D
Really? I guess you're right in that I've not seen a lot of people talk about this gem of a game.
I'll check out your review too ^^
Here after the Rescue Team DX launch trailer. I also was a Cyndaquil with a Chikorita partner on the new demo.
Cubone and Todadile.
@Weston Meyer reverse order but still similar.
Team spicy!
and the SCORE. Man those songs I love them tunes
In all of them. The cores are so fuckin' good
Run away is still my favorite song in this game and you really hit it home on what i felt in the game and btw i was also cyntiqule.
Followed by Parting.
Thank you very much. I really appreciate that :)
Cyndaquil is a great starter :D
Not to mention the friend areas, one of the best mechanics seen in Pokèmon games
Oh? Interesting! Why do you like the friend areas so much?
This... Blue Rescue Team is the game that brought me back into the Pokémon franchise after I fell out of the loop as a child (Almost ironically, I only played Blue version before it). I have a lot of fond memories towards this game and I still play it today, even to the point where I've been writing my own fanfic/retelling on it.
Hey, that's awesome!
There's something about these kinds of games that lend themselves VERY well to fanfics/retellings. It's really cool ^^
Thank you for leaving a little comment here ^^
Watched this while hyping myself up for Mystery Dungeon DX and it made me break down in tears. This game reminds me of my childhood, and a time when a close friend of mine, who passed away last year, and I would play this game religiously. I spent many late school nights playing it, hiding from my mom who would burst in my room randomly to check and see if I was really asleep.
You couldn't be more right about the emotional impact of the game, music, and storyline. I love it to death and it's probably my favorite game ever, so thank you for this.
RIP Jolene.
Aww... I'm really sorry to hear that. Sounds like you guys had some wonderful memories. Hold on to those. Cherish them.
Just finished Mystery dungeon DX. 25 and i'm still crying at the ending like a kid. And i knew it would happen because i played the game ages ago!
That moment that the happy Treecko started realising that his best friend, Totodile, would leave.. Ah man...
All game long he's just genuinely positive and hopeful about most things. To see that poor bastard break down because of the inevitable, oh man..
What am i doing with me life T_T
Awww... Glad you liked it so much at least. I've not yet gotten that far. DX just ended up in my mailbox, so I still have a bit to go!
You summed up this game's appeal really well! Ever since I played Blue Rescue Team I think I've best enjoyed games which take you through such a journey of emotions. Can't wait to see your future videos :)
Thank you so much ^^
And yeah. I prefer games where you can learn something about yourself along the way. another great title like that, is persona 4
8:36 This part of the game genuinely hurt my feelings and I couldn't understand how easily someone like Alakazam and his team (Who are pretty much the A-Team) turn on you so easily from something so obscure. I was a child still but charizard saying he didn't know how to show mercy to a harmless teary-eyed Charmander(Me), and all of them attacking us hit me a bit harder than it should've. I honestly felt like i was in that exile journey with partner foreal. My life at the time closely mirrored this situation in a lot of ways so I felt it deeper. Great retrospective video bro 👍🏾 you dug up some memories for sure
I've played this recently and it really makes the team members feel like family...
It is wonderful, isn't it? :)
@@Focie couldn't say it any better
You sir have earned ny subscription!
And trust me that I don't usually post comments in any video.
However, Mystery Dungeon (*_ESPECIALLY_* Explorers of Sky) is my favorite game ever. And you truly seem to share the appreciation for these underrated masterpieces! :'D
You'll grow bigger and bigger. I wouldn't be surprised if you reach 1 million subs in a year or two.
Thank you m8
Man, I'm sorry I didn't respond to this a year ago. I must not have gotten a notification on it. Thank you for the vote of confidence! A year has passed, and I'm not exactly at 1 million subs.. but I've gotten a bit bigger :D
And yeah, while each game has some issues, I really love all of them.
I bawled my eyes out every single playthrough. And I did around 12 of em. Gets me every time.
It really does mess you up, right?
In my opinion what makes it special for me is this. If you are like me you only have played the original series. With this it mixes things up instead of a a role playing game where you collect monsters. YOU ARE one of these monsters plus you can actually understand them like they were humans.....and game play wise it's become a dungeon crawler AND I LOVE IT. I played it since I can't remember. And I still love it.
It's taking part of the world you always saw in the series. Pokémon could talk and understand each other, but you only understood the other humans, just like the games. Now the other world is open
Focie yup. Plus add in the fact that in explorers you could possibly be a Eevee and your set for a win.
I can't believe I've only just found your channel.
Rescue Team was the first game I ever played, and is my favourite game of all time. You perfectly described the sense of magic this game brings, and god that part about the partner made me cry all over again.
Thank you :)
Aww. That's super duper nice. Truth be told, you probably didn't know about this channel because... I don't upload too often. Life and self doubt gets in the way. Not like... dramatic self doubt. Just the feeling of "This is probably not something people will enjoy".
@@Focie That's perfectly understandable - life comes first, and you don't need to force yourself to upload 💖
@@-memoria-2136 I'm absolutely not forcing myself to ^^
I do want to make more stuff though!
I didn't know the game (heard of it but I didn't pay attention) your video made my mind to preorder it. Thank you for such a wonderful review. Let's cry together when I beat the game!
That's super nice to hear! I hope you enjoy it a ton!
Tbh, Whenever I have to say goodbye in these games, I feel like that moment when "the dwarf" from Fullmetal Alchemist is taken back by the door, or that Tom Hiddleston meme of smiling despite almost crying.
If there's a video game that needs a movie adaptation, it would be Pokémon Mystery Dungeon!
I dunno... I really like that it's in game form. A movie adaptation likely wouldn't let you have enough time with the characters to truly fall for them.
A TV series however.......
Definitely the part that got me really loving this game was the fact that I felt like I was part of the pokemon community in the game. Not a lot of games do that so it was quite special. Anyway you got the main point why this game is so charming so this was quite a nice video.
hey! thank you! I'm glad you liked it :)
Very high quality video you made here! I connected on a personal level with all the points you made, so I'd say your analysis is spot on!
Thank you very much, I'm glad to hear it :D
I just experienced this series very recently and currently I've fallen inlove with this series!
I played Red Rescue Team on the GBA and oh my god your partner is such a bro, I swear to god. Especially that ending bit, my god my heart aaa. I'm currently playing the seuqel and I'm loving my time with it but I can already tell you that I'm _incredibly_ happy to have finally given this series another go-a-round.
I have so much nastalgia for this game. It was my first Pokémon game.
Wallywutsizface It is an amazing game for sure. Not a bad first, if you ask me
I hope it gets a remake.
Thanks for the great vidoe

Already on it, dude! :D
Also streaming the end of my blind playthrough of Super Mystery Dungeon tomorrow :D
I usually do not comment on the videos, but after seeing this review I find it impossible to say anything.
Yesterday a friend recommended me your videos, specifically those that speak of Mystery Dungeon, since I consider myself a great fan of the saga for a very long time.
To put you in a situation, Rescue Team is my favorite videogame. I know that the gameplay is not the best and
objectively there are other better games in the saga, but none comes to squeeze my heart in this way as Rescue Team does. In this video you have explained in such a wonderful and emotional way all the feelings that this game conveys to me, I would never have been able to explain those feelings in words. I really love the warmth and confidence that your partner transmits to you during the adventure, this game has taught me the true meaning of friendship.
It makes me so happy to know that there are more people who have come to feel the same as me. This video has really reached my heart, I literally ended up crying hehe. 😆
I would be lying if I said I would not like you to consider making another video like this one of the remake that will be released in March. 🤭
Thank you very much for making such emotional and good videos!
I really want to see the following videos you've made about the saga, I'm sure they will be as good as this one! 💙
(I apologize in case I made a mistake writing, my English is not too good, I'm Spanish and I don't practice the language much... 😅)
Thank you so much for commenting. I really appreciate it! In my case I deffo want to cover this for the remake in March!
Y no te preocupes. Tu inglés es muy buen.
I love the PMD series! You're right about the bond between you and your partner. Everytime I grow to ADORE my partner in every game. My partner was a Pikachu named Roran in PMD Blue. (I was Chikorita :) ) and I loved him! :') The ending made me cry too.
The ending is heartrending! I take it that's Roran in your profile picture? :D
Focie No this is actually another Pikachu entirely lol. I have a drawing of Roran on my Tumblr though. (Totally not self promoting :P)
G-bot it's not self promotion untill I see a link there :P
And alright. ^^
This video reminded me of when I used to play this on a really old phone (with an emulator) and now I somehow managed to transfer my 8 year old save file to my current phone. I'm so happy but also extremely nostalgic
This is the first game ive ever owned myself at the age of 8
I love it and it has a special place in my heart
I cried every time i played through it
I could go through a whole speech but... I'm just going to say this was an awesome video. An awesome relatable video.
Thank you very much. That's very humbling to hear :)
PMD 2 is a LEGEND. It's honestly what I think the main games would be better off as.
You and me both. A bit more structure to the story and dialogue and you have a game of the year/decade candidate for sure
Awesome to be watching this again and having a bit of a story summary. I remember playing this game and pretty much not understanding the story as I was in 3rd grade back then. I would've never known! Great video, by the way!
Thank you very much :)
It seems a lot of people played this when it came out. I was not one of them, but I'm happy to say that it holds up well today
Speaking as one who did, it certainly got nostalgic very quickly, and still to this day.
My first run of PMD1 was a shared save file on my brother's cart. Towards the mid and lategame I was the only one making any progress; not to say he wasn't having any fun, as we later both got PMD2 on release, but I guess he just wasn't made for roguelikes. After finishing the story, it soon ended up becoming my own cart because I already wanted to play it again :U
2 people have no soul.
you are serriously one of the best youtubers with the best productions
also, just you talking about the game and me remembering the scenes almost made me cry
Wow, thank you very much for the kind comment. That makes me very happy to hear :)
And yeah. Writing the script almost made me cry. I was listening to some of the soundtrack to get in the right mood, and suddenly the "Farewell Fugitives" song comes on, and the whole tone shifted drastically, heheh. Still think the video was better off for it though :)
After watching this ik totally watching your Sky video.
Everything you said...its exactly how I feel about these games.
Hey, that's awesome! Glad you liked it :D
I don’t know if someone has already posted this or not, but the post game story with Gengar is honestly a really touching end for the game. For me, several years had passed since I had progressed the main story since I lost my Dive HM after dying in the Kyogre dungeon, and it wasn’t until my younger brother deleted my save file like a dingus that I finally started playing it again. I was upset of course, but now I finally had the drive to find out what happened to Gardevoir in the end. I made my way back to where I left off and made it through Kyogre’s dungeon. After plowing through the conditions necessary for the post game, I finally got to start Gengar’s story mission.
In it we see Gengar going to Ninetales trying to lift the curse on Gardevoir, but ultimately they are redirected to Murky Cave to see if Gengar’s heart has changed enough for the curse to be lifted, since Ninetales had cursed him for the person he once was. There, a disembodied voice passes judgement on Gengar. After asking the player questions about Gengar to get a more honest response of how he has changed, the voice ultimately determines that it can’t lift the curse. Desperate, Gengar pleads with the voice, saying how he knows that he was a horrible person and that he treated Gardevoir so poorly, along with you and your partner, and he even starts to cry! After listing his horrible deeds, he finally realizes that what he’s been lacking all this time was a sense of gratitude.
The voice reveals that through finally realizing what he lacked, the curse was able to be lifted. However, Ninetales reveals that Gardevoir’s memories of everything before the curse was lifted will be lost, and she won’t even remember who he is. Despite this, Gengar is actually content, instead caring more about the fact that he was able to save her from the curse than being remembered. The mission ends with Gardevoir introducing herself to Gengar as a stranger before Gengar leaves for good. Seeing such a satisfying conclusion after so many years left me feeling both joy and sadness with how it all turned out. It’s been years since then, but this moment has stuck with me ever since.
Apologies if you actually played it or if someone has already pointed it out.
Damn. I had no idea. I didn't even play the post game since it looked like your partner just became a nobody, so I skipped over it. Thanks for letting me know!
I liked and subscrived to your channel before you even mentioned it. You are really good.
See? People know how it works. No need to be in your face about it.
I dislike when youtubers go all "Now, remember to leave a like, remember to subscribe and remember to comment!" I get a bit miffed, since I know that if I have a comment I'd like to make, I'd make it without them saying so.
Oh well, I can't do anything about those guys, but I can do something about it for myself, so I won't do that.

I think what makes it special is that its filled with content. The story touches you.
And they always make something new and fresh.
The actual pokemon games have not. Except for black and white.
This series needs help, passion and love into the game.
Mystery dungeon shows that
It's filled with a heart that you just don't find in the main series. It got close with the gyms in Sword and Shield, but it's still held back.
It got even closer with the pokemon following you in HG/SS... And that's probably why that's my favorite as far as generations go

I got this game form my grandmother and I thought it was hard coming back to it years later it was good
Holds up remarkably well to this day :D
While I appreciate your perspective on these games, I have to disagree with you on the story here. Prior warning, I may end up with a bit of a wall of text here, sorry. :P
I felt as though the first set of games really dropped the ball at the end of the fugitive arc. The entire game, whilst building your relationship with your partner and the other characters of the town, has a central theme. That is, ones personality and what it means to others. You start as a blank slate that remembers nothing but the fact that you used to be human and throughout the game you are told of the calamities that have befallen this world and experience them first hand with your partner. How you handle these problems within the world has an impact on the characters around you. As you create a rescue team with your partner and help many of the pokemon you see around town, they come to know you for your good deeds and these shape your personality and thus relationships with other characters.
The twist with Whiscash is where the game picks up steam. Now that you have been taken from a blank slate to a valued member of your community with friends and allies, a wrench is thrown into your own character, the legend of the ninetails. I loved how when you and your partner are told the story, nothing is said explicitly, but it is implied by you and your partners reactions that you are both aware of the implications. This brings into question your own characters personality, worth, and morality. This is where the interesting questions posed by the game come to the surface. If you are a bad person, who looses all memory of their past deeds and thus goes on to do good things, are you absolved of your past sins? Are you a different person now? More over, should your friends treat you differently based on that revelation if they only knew you after your amnesia? This does not even begin to describe the implications of you having to come to terms with your own past sins with Gardevoir and thus having to decide exactly who your are.
There are a lot of great questions imposed by this revelation and you and your partner desperately search to find the answer, to absolve you of that sin by exonerating you completely. Neither you or your partner want to deal with the fact that you may have not only done some terrible things in the past, but also may be the cause of the many calamities you both have dealt with. The thing that strengthens your bond with your partner is that even when every other character has decided that you must go for your past sins, your partner continues to stand by your side, determined to exonerate you. The key to this is that your partner does this to validate his own beliefs. He does not want to admit that you may be the person from legend thus he continues on to exonerate you instead of facing the inevitable truth. We are shown time and time again that you are the person from that legend through your frequent dreams with Gardevoir and even when you begin to loose faith in yourself, your partner never gives up. Your partner does not want to face that truth and through his implied doubt, you can see him holding onto the possible exoneration as sort of fleeting hope, so that he does not have to face the reality you both fear.
We know you are the person from legend, we are waiting for the ultimate, inevitable reveal. The moment of truth. Will your partner, when faced with the reality he has denied for so long, be able to look past that to still stand by your side? Will you be able to atone for your past sins and bring an end to the curse? Imagine your partner, after learning the truth, deciding that despite everything, he would stay by your side because the actions you had taken as a pokemon proved you to be a different person than the man that left Gardevoir behind. Only to have that unbreakable trust and friendship ripped away when you disappear when the curse was lifted. Now that would be powerful.
Instead, you are immediately exonerated by Ninetails himself. All the dreams with Gardevoir? Pointless. All the questions, all the worry, everything, gone. You and your partner never have to face that reality, it's just gone. You have little to no relevance to the story, you're just some random human. Actually, it isn't an ancient curse tied into your very character that is causing calamities, it's just a meteorite. The real kicker is after you have thoroughly embarrassed the greatest rescue team around by proving their assumption false and literally surviving running from them and encounters with all 3 legendary birds, on your own, they tell you that you aren't strong enough to take on the real threat and to just go "home". You then literally just wait at home base for the plot to decide what its going to do now that it has dropped everything it has built up and eventually go get Rayquaza to blow up a meteor and somehow that causes you to disappear. They had so much going for them and face-planted so hard at the end that they cracked the concrete.
Sorry again for the wall of text, I just saw so much potential for this game and while I do still adore it for what it is, I feel as though the story just didn't live up to the expectations it setup. Anyway, I did enjoy your video, it was very well made. You did earn a subscriber in me even if we disagree here. :)
I have now tried to reply to your comment thrice, and it never posts. I'll give you the cliffnotes.
Incredibly well put. I had not thought about that before. I agree. Thank you for writing it :D
Focie
While I am disappointed RUclips wouldnt let me see your full thoughts, I appreciate the reply regardless. :)
LordUzaki holy crap, it finally went through. I was about to give up!
Alright, so... What I originally wrote was that I'm not a fan of reviewing something that could have been, since it only exists in our heads. A bit unfair to be disappointed because of something it isn't, instead of looking at what IS, you know?
That being said, I completely agree with you. Ninetails letting you off the hook kind of does undermine the story it sets up. I was a bit swept away by the emotional outburst of the partner to see how it undermines the other things in the game.
I still think the emotional outburst is important, but I think that they could've managed to do it without "robbing you" of a moment where you truly have to ask yourself if you can change even though you did horrible things in the past.
In a sense, I kiiiind of like that you're "just a guy" instead of everything in the whole world revolving around you, but again.. that robs you of some hard hitting questions and some interesting social commentary that it DID seem like it was setting up. Great comment. Made me think a lot, and I think I agree with you
Well put and honestly, I did not think about the outburst from your partner in such a way until hearing your perspective on it and it does give me some appreciation for what I saw as the games biggest letdown.
As far as the "you're just a guy" aspect. I do agree that the trope of "everything revolves around you" does get tiresome, but felt like this game did very little with the idea that you have little relevance to the story. Your apparent previous humanity becomes moot as after Ninetails we are left asking, "So why are we here?".
Personally, I felt that Gates to Infinity, the third installment in this franchise, does the "just a random guy" aspect way better and is why I particularly enjoyed Gates to Infinity for it's writing in that regard.
But that has little to do with this video. Overall, thanks you getting back to me, I appreciate the reply. :)
LordUzaki ultimately, I agree with you. I loved Gates to Infinity in that regard, and I tried to get that across when I reviewed it.
I only have Super to go now, and that game was a hoot and a half.
Wait, you already cried about this game's ending? Wow, i can only imagine how crushing Mario Galaxy's ending would be to you.
Mario Galaxy's ending is just feel-good more than anything else to me ^^
@@Focie What about bobby's death? (In paper mario the origami king)
@@UltimateWahee Had not gotten to that yet.. Could you maybe give me a spoiler warning next time? :P
@@Focie al least it's very early into the game...
I was hoping for a new game in the franchise during the direct but honestly I forgot how good this game was
I was also hoping for a new game, but I still appreciate seeing that the series isn't dead.
I didn't rememberthis first mystery dungeon game being so touching
It is surprisingly heartfelt ^^
Started crying about 10:12
That music brought back so many memories of this game.
Amazing video man :,D
That is the reason I said the music was one of the most amazing parts of the game. I didn't offer it too many words because the script and video was too long already, but the music truly makes the game special. Run Away Fugitives makes me cry too. I can't describe it as anything but nostalgia... but I didn't play this game before a few months ago, so I have NO idea why I'd be nostalgic.
Focie Red rescue team was one of the first games that I owned for myself and wasn't a hand me down. I remember after beating that game I broke down crying. I still get teary eyed listening to most of the music today. This game will always be one of the highest on my list of great games XD
+peep911 I will also remember it. I love the game because it... gave so much. it's truly a great game, and nobody seems to talk about it. terribly sad
The one game where Chikorita shines the most. I often chose her in Johto games, despite being the undersdog, but I adore how cute it's emotes are in the PMD series.
Glad to be reliving some nostalgia.
Hahha, I'm happy to hear that. I also adore the god damn Chayote! It's so adorable!
For anyone (like myself) who is looking for more PMD content, there is a comic "series" called Anamnesis that goes into the worldbuilding and what-if scenarios of PMD. Be warned however, the stories Zaffre and DEADLiNE are kinda dark, so be advised. DEADLiNE actually deals with RRT/BRT/DX, in a what-if scenario of Ninetails not showing up fast enough to resolve the fight between you and team ACT, and a potential reasoning behind why they bowed to the whims of a mob frenzied by only rumors and hearsay, instead of attempting to deal with the situation in any sort of rational way. A good, but dark look into a slightly different universe.
Such an incredible review, it points out everything i adore about this game!
Smashed the like so hard!
Amazing video my friend ^_^
Whoooaaa! Thank you very much! That's incredibly nice of you to say! :D
I really appreciate it :D
13:07 "It's not as polished and refined as you come to expect from the main series" HA
Can't wait to play this game, I'm getting it soon :)
I came from reddit. Good video, and I'm glad to see the first games getting recognition over the explorers games for once.
The explorer games deserve all the love they get, but I think the original is just amazing too.
And I'm glad you liked the video. I had hoped it'd catch on a bit more on Reddit, but I can't complain ^^
Have a great day, friend :D
+Focie have you posted to /r/pokemon too? it should catch on there
+Jorik Jonker it didn't. I've now posted it to three places, and I feel a little dirty doing it. No more from me :P
I think the most powerful works suck you into its world so much, that you actually start to feel like you are apart of it. Its more than just immersion, its like you are actually friends with the characters you are watching / interacting with. As you said in the video, you felt like a real compatriot with Visse. I think Long form works like Television and games truly excel at this, and when they end its almost like you died. Like that version of you is dead, and you'll never be able to experience the connection you had "growing" with those characters again. Or I'm being hyperbolic about not being able to watch / play more of something I like.
You know what? That's a really interesting way of looking at it. Wow. Good point. :)
Thank ya man. I should also say that I really liked the video, and am glad you pushed through to completion. You're videos have such a welcoming atmosphere, which makes this game an apt choice to cover. Looking forward to whatever comes next
+Zac Frazier (Etc.) Oh my.. thank you. That makes me happy to hear :)
i used to play this game alot as a kid, i made it pretty far into the game and stopped. i just recently found a copy of blue mystery dungeon for ds and replayed it again, and in my replay i must not of had sound on while listening to the final moments of the story finish and the credits because i really didnt remember having such a sad feeling of the story coming to a close... its just so weird looking at it now compared to when i played it back then, whether or not it was just out of my understanding as a kid or i just didnt pay attention to the ending (im not 100% sure) but man it sure brought some insane emotions hearing it and experiencing it again all these years later.
I'm sure you've grown as a person since then. I love replaying games when I'm a little bit older as my perspectives subtly change and an old experience can feel fresh again.
@@Focie for sure! I dont think i have ever felt that emotion replaying a game before years after originally playing. Almost surreal feeling
What you just said......about how you didn't feel alone....to me...that is the magic of these games....you actually grow attached to your partner and stop seeing them as a game character...but as a real person...it creates the illusion that it's real...
And it's a wonderful illusion too. As far as I am concerned, I treasure moments like that.
This game was my childhood
I've just started playing red rescue team on a rom, i named my rescue team WaterBurn (cuz i was a mudkip and my partner is charmander)
Cubone and a Todadile. Named team boneheads.
Waterburn isn't bad at all! But hey, if you have a switch, they just released a demo of the remake of Red Rescue team
This was the first game to make me cry.
Not the first to make me cry, but damn successful at it
I always said that Pokemon Mystery Dungeon was one of the most underrated games, not only Pokemon, but ever, being a top 5 of the series for me. And not only the story makes the game so great imo like everyone says, but the gameplay also takes the little annoyances of the main series and gets it fixed. You can obtain all of the Pokemon by yourself, rare tm are no longer unique and you can obtain multiple of it (like multiple ice beam), MO dont annoy any more and remember moves for a Pokemon is now free.
The graphics in this game are amazing. While not technically as impressive like Pokemon Emerald, the artstyle is still mindblowing.
One of the few games on the series i can say is a masterpiece, or close to be....
Just shut up IGN...
I played the red version.
They're virtually the same game, so you're not missing a lot :)
@@Focie I technically played hard mode as the buttons were mapped differently on the GBA.
Focie yeah there aren’t. The 2 games have only 5 exclusive Pokémon. They also have different soundtracks due to hardware similar to the original ace attorney trilogy. That’s about it in terms of “””major””” changes.
i know this vid is old, and i dont wanna be that guy, but your rank IS significant,, it makes it easier to recruit mons iirc :))
Oh snap. I was not aware of that. Thanks
@@Focie you're welcome! hope i didn't come off as arrogant lol,, but yeah i looked it up just now and being levels 90-100 gives you a +24% recruitment/befriend rate (source: Bulbapedia) lol
The way you described the game made me think that you would really like making a review on a game named "To The Moon". It has, just like this game, a preety limited gameplay (if you even consider "wandering around and checking objects in between cutscenes and an ocasional simple-to-solve puzle" gameplay), but that is not it's focus. The game is revolved around it's awesome and emotional story, supplemented by it's gorgeous piano OTS. I won't spoil anything about it's story, but you need to play it. It is, without a doubt, the best narrative Indie game that exists.
I've never even heard about it, but I will most definitely check it out! Thank you very much for the suggestion
To The Moon is definitely worth a try if you're looking for a good story, albeit not quite as endearing as PMD in my opinion.
Mint Vanilla In that case, I'll definitely give it a try. Sounds interesting. Thanks!
Eh... to be honest i think the gameplay is very good and peak roguelike genre.
The hero is the only pokemon with a gender cuz you can use attract on anything even legends
So it's a balancing thing? That's neat
You describe the game the way it meant to be described an emosal ride
I'm really glad you liked it :D
Screw Ranger, screw XD, screw Snap. Mystery Dungeon is without a doubt the best Pokémon non-main series game!
I got a bulbasaur and like to choose a Totodile as my partner. I always set the team name as Hydrangea.
That's a damn good name! Nice!
I never played the blue version but I beat the red version at least twice and replayed the fugitive portion at least a dozen. I really love these games.
so do I. The two versions are apparently not too different
Whenever I have to leave my partner. I just break. I start crying like a character in my books that I'm super Attatched to dies. I just break. I cry almost as much as I do at my poppys funeral. IT JUST PUNCHES MY HEART AND KEEPS ON WHEN YOU THINK IT'S OVER IT IS BACK. Fresh dies in the Blixer/Fresh x female reader Wattpad fan fiction Pink Roses. Fresh dies even though he can't. I'm overcome with emotions and the quartet killed the one who made me feel safe. Made me feel loved. Made me believe I was beautiful (Blixers words not mine. If I felt like hurting myself just repeat. I am safe. I am loved. I am beautiful keep repeating until I believe it. You get so attached to fresh mostly because of his ability to see if the response you gave to a situation was deserved you reacacted accordingly. Like you hit a mug on his head when you see your best friend Mordecai corrupted. He gave him free will and understood that you reacted to the situation like a normal person would. ALSO FRESH MORDECAI ISN'T MY BOYFRIEND. HE'S GAY.
Blixer: ... Homosexual or extremely happy?
Meh: Homosexual.
Blixer is absolutely fine about it. You just acted like he was your boyfriend because he was your only friend who is always available. MORDECAI STOP BEING EMBARRASSING. I'M JUST GOING TO SPEND THE DAY WITH BARRACUDA. And Dorito and Pizza and Equil. And all of the others. Blixer was embarrassed to admit that his cats real name and full name is Princess Dumpling Marigold Sweetheart McFluffy the second.
But we call her Dumpling for short.
What do you think of Super? I'm yet to touch it after Gates failed me desperately.
I've JUST started Super. Like, I'm-not-even-done-with-the-first-Dungeon kind of "just started"
And that being said.. I thought Gates was great. Different... But still great. So far, Super looks like it's much, MUCH more like the other ones, and I think that's great ^^
Oh... you talked about the end of the game...
I'M NOT CRYING, YOUR CRYING!
I sure was. That's very true.
I agree the story & music in this game is phenomenal, absolute gem of a game XD
Really, really love it!
100% agreed.
I love this series, but it can be so frustrating to play sometimes. I literally have had to walk away because sometimes playing can be nightmarish. It took me over an hour to get through the Surrounded Sea, which is arguably one of the easiest post-game dungeons there is, all because I was extremely unlucky and kept getting crit-shot by every Octillery with Signal Beam or Quilfish with Poison Sting. It wouldn't be as bad if it felt fair, but it doesn't, since usually the reason you die is because you never got a chance to react, and the punishment for losing is super harsh.
Oh, for sure. I never even bothered with the post game. I'm there for the story and the characters, and as soon as you evolve, it seems all character just disappears. Not for me. And yeah, stuff happening from off screen sucks. That sounds like hell
Note: the side rescues ties into the main story
The ranking matter too, they help you get more dungeons to get legendaries
But does that _really_ matter with the story? I'll be honest and say I barely touched the post game since it felt like the main characters stopped being characters and just became soulless in a way.
I was also a cyndaquil or timid personality
Cubone with lonely.
@@barrybend7189 cool
@@animeprotagonistishere5365 broken with most bosses but move use was insanely low as Cubone was weak to most opponents in red rescue team.
Cutest starter!
