I am not welsh but I spent sometime working in Aberdovey and got know quite a few welsh people I was stranger but I received a warm welcome from a very friendly people. I heard a lot welsh songs and grew to love the people. I listen to the songs of David Alexander and they take back to the happiest days of life and remind me of the people I left behind when I returned home. I would love to back one day.

I grew up in the South Wales valleys, in the former mining town of Bargoed. Once a vibrant town until the pits closed in 1977. I left Bargoed in November 2015 to move to Poole in Dorset. One day I shall come back, ...yes, one day.

It's good that you are proud of your roots. Unfortunately, I don't think many of today's youngsters would shed even a single tear if they were to move to Australia like you did. You are better off where you are now but cherish your memories of the Rhondda past. It was a better place then. We have gone backwards. Thank your lucky stars that you missed the dreadful Thatcher years - policies that destroyed our way of life as we knew it. Good luck to you.

SuperBC10 think you have taken that message and stereotyped the younger Rhondda Generation. I am 24 and been traveling for 5 years (with uni, Asia and the job) and trust me I miss the Rhondda! I am very proud and I know ALOT of my pals are very proud. So stop with the stereotypes

The Rhondda and many other vallets were scarred for years with tips which were extremely dangerous also. The valleys are much more picturesque these days but it is the people that make the community, so its up to thos living. It is much more difficult now as all the heavy industry dissapeared making the valleys residential areas and not industrial. These does not help community spirit as people travel to work not work locally. You can never re create that with the mines closed as hundreds of us used to work in the same place, walk home, play rugby together, drinkt together etc. This will never return so the communities need to adapt and try to maintain old values. It is not easy for the yoinger generation to find work in the valleys at all.

I'm not of Welsh decent, but I grew up with a lot of Welshmen and pulled coal from a great many men from all over the world.I'm a singer at heart, once was a tenor and I appreciate the music of David Alexander, Chris Kavanah, Tom Jones and all the rest of the great tenors. My voice used to echo through the entries and rooms of some of the mines in the Valley of the Red Deer River. I find it so disheartening to listen to those who don't appreciate a good voice.

Thank you, Chris. My Dad left the Rhondda to look for work, just as in the song. He lived away for 60 years but was still always a Valleys boy and lies now on the top of Penrhys. The song fitted him so beautifully and it does make me tearful very often.

You can take the person out of Wales, but you can’t take Wales out of the person, not from the Rhondda myself, but from the next valley over the Rhymney Valley, will never forget my roots, even my son, who was born in Coventry regards himself as Welsh and as proud of the fact as I am.

Thank you for this - it's one of the songs that I love. I'm from Ponty but moved to Australia in 1994 when the last of my family in Ponty died. My mum had remarried and moved out here in 1986. My grandfather had 'Myfanwy' played at his funeral in Glyntaff Crematorium and that's another song that kills me to listen to.
Whilst I live so far away, I am and always will be Welsh and very proud of it too.

Do your history Labour closed more mines than the Tories in the 70s.
Sadly it became a war between Scargill and Thatcher & there was only going to be one winner. We in Wales have had Labour rule for over 20 years & look at the mess of this once great country is in with every valley town a shit hole & sadly its getting worse we need a change someone who actually cares for the working class people in this country.
