  • WA Mozart's 'Fantasia in F minor K 608' played on the organ of Arundel Cathedral during a live Organ Recital I gave there on 21st January 2023.
This piece was originally written for a mechanical clock/organ which meant that Wolfgang didn't have any player limitations. To play the original version by him would be impossible (not least because we don't have the original manuscript!). The version that I'm using is the rather romantic and inappropriate arrangement by Walter Emery. But d'ya know what? I love it as it was the first version I ever heard of it played by Noel Rawsthorne on the legendary Great Cathedral Organ Series at Liverpool Cathedral. Classic!
Let me know if you enjoyed it... or not!

Audio and visual equipment is expensive, and I also pay a fair fee to all recitalists who appear on BIS. This is why I regularly ask YOU to help, and I’m sorry for having to do so. Beautifully performed. Your mention of the Noel Rawsthorne recording resonates with me as it was one of the first organ recordings I ever purchased, and I have had the goal of learning all the pieces on that record ever since. Got the Whitlock Fanfare going but the Durufle still needs work... LOL - Thank you for your support of the organ, its literature and performers.

👍👏 Thanks for the concert on Saturday. I hope the 2 thoughtless women who were chatting through most of it until they were told to be quiet didn't come over in the recordings of the other pieces.

I hate it when people talk during concerts, or theatre performances. If they want to chat they should go in to the bar area, otherwise they should shut up 🫢🤣🥳

A moving performance - typically WAM! The registration is most attractive and is evocative of a mechanical clock/organ sound. I love it!

Thrilling! One of my favorite organ works - I was so excited to see this on your programme for the recital, and thrilled that we can enjoy this superb recording. You navigate all of its fiddly bits with such ease!! Hats off! It works so well on the organ at Arundel, wonderful colours, and I particularly enjoyed your orchestral registration in the central section. Bravo!!!!

This Fantasia is the more popular of the two he actually wrote. Though I do also like the other one often referred to as Fantasia in F minor/major and in some editions cited as Adagio & Fugue. Wonderful playing as ever from Richard who demonstrates all the nuances and textures this piece demands !

    Lord Richard,
I so relish your interpretation of K.608 - Methinks Mozart would approve too. I remember being smitten by E. Power Biggs playing K.608 on the huge machine in Passau.
