Thank you very much for the video. I had exactly the same problem: a low output level on the left channel and background noise . As I am not a technician and therefore have neither the knowledge nor the specialized measuring equipment I worked by reasoning starting with the simplest things (visual inspection to check whether there is something fishy like a capacitor leaking or a burn, testing the speakers and the amplifier (Quad 405) by reversing the connections, handling the sockets, etc.). In the end the problem was a bad connection: I noticed it by lightly manipulating the socket which connects the input card with the motherboard (a black plug with red, yellow, green, white wires). A little contact cleaner spray on the male and female parts, I also re-soldered the socket and the problem was solved. I hope this can help those who are facing this problem which can have multiple causes as shown in this excellent video. Keep faith, these devices are very solid (unless they have been badly tinkered with)! PS: I bought my Quad 44/405 new when I was young and they are still in service (so do I).
Too many years ago to admit to, I had a Quad 22 with left and right power amps, all valves. When I they needed a service I rang up Quad in Cambridge. Even before I spoke to a technician the girl on the switchboard knew exactly what I was talking about as to the model manufacturer date denoted by the inside circuit boards. Alphabetical or numerical. Also what valve numbers. I duely sent it off and it was returned within seven working days BEFORE I was even sent a bill! Their service was amazing.
Ahhh, the days of good quality British Service. I used to belong to the elite trade that took pride in their work, and traced faults to component level. Now it's a swap and chuck the stuff back to the factory for a rework - board swap.
Thanks for this. I have a QUAD 44 with a similar fault. The left-hand channel sounds different from the right. The right hand channel sounds bright but the base is thin the left-hand channel sounds full bodied with deep bass. i’ve been trying to solve this problem for years so hopefully I’ll zoom in on the tone control board and see if I can spot anything that doesn’t look rightt perhaps if not you might be able to assist thank you
Nice video. IAG: International Audio Group. Bought several prestigious British hi-fi companies. Quad being one. Others included Mission, Wharfdale and McLaren. It is a Chinese company owned by two brothers.
@@robturner3065 Thanks but that link and shopping basket is still functional, so maybe someone else is running it? I have no requirements so cannot confirm you can buy anything from it.

Thanks, didn't know that.
Very interesting video, I've just been given a 44 that requires an on/off switch , do you know where I can obtain spare parts ?
Thanks 👍
Google is your friend, try here: shop.dadaelectronics.eu/quad/quad-new-original-spare-parts/
Thanks 👍@@ChasLarge
@@richarddavey9547have you tried quad? They still have parts for the 44 in stock

Good spot with resistor before you started pulling things out
Thanks, it was found because I went to probe them with the scope. It was pretty obvious as shown earlier in the video, I just didn't see it earlier.
turn off the tone
It's in the recording, so I can't, sorry.
