SONY ICF 790L Repair
A fairly quick repair on a second hand SONY ICF-790L tri-band radio. Bought by the customer as working but stopped within an hour after he started using it. Rather than return it, the client thought it would be a good project for one of my videos. Enjoy.

Hacker RP73 Repair
Просмотров 254Месяц назад
I picked up this lovely old Hacker PR73 Autocrat Mk 11 with the idea of restoring it for use to listen to the sports when working in my shed. I suspected from the "Not working" report on the E-Bay sale page, that the Audio Output stage would be at fault. This was common when I repaired these regularly back in the 80s. So checking the supply current confirmed there was a short across the battery...
Another CUB Monitor Recap

Thanks to previous videos I've made, folk have got in touch so I've had another Microvitec CUB in for a full recap. This one is a Model 1455, not a model I've dealt with before. It's from 1989 and has both TTL and Analogue RGB inputs. The standard BBC Micro input works OK but I don't have anything that generates Analogue RGB in the format this connector required. It's just a short video, no sol...
Grundig Yacht Boy 1100 Restoration

I spotted this old Grundig Yacht Boy 1100 for sale on e-bay "For parts / Not working" so thought it would make a nice video if I could get it working. Turns out it was working but the usual thing with old radios, the controls and switches needed cleaning. The slider controls appear to be a Grundig own design as I've never seen these type used elsewhere. Dismantling and repairing them fixed the ...
CCL MOBO Testing

Testing a motherboard after return from CCL, still faulty. CCL took the bird back again, and once again could not fault it. they sent me a video of their testing which showed only 1 beep. It's possible that the BIOS was not talking to any of my older graphics cards and so this appeared to be a bad CPU. If I had been forced to accept it, I would have had to buy a new graphics card like they used...

JVC Shower Radio Repair

This is a short video of a repair I did a year ago, I've only just got round to editing it together. A simple fault, and simple repair. Sadly, a lot of the original video recordings were not good enough to include, so it's the best I could do with what was left. Enjoy.

Ferguson TX90 TV Monitor Repair

I acquired this Ferguson TX90 TV/Monitor some time ago and it's been working perfectly, until a day or two ago. When switched on, there is a loud HUM which cannot be turned down with the volume control. There is also a large dark band (HUM BAR) rolling down the screen. Checking the suppliy rais for ripples was not the answer. Upon checking the output from the 12V regulator, revealed it was no l...
Fixing Pioneer Amplifier Distortion

FIXING PIONEER AMPLIFIER DISTORTION This Pioneer SX434 Tuner Amplifier came to me after I repaired another one last year. The customer saw the repair, got in touch and aske me to look at it. Using heating and cooling, I eventually traced the fault to the two output transis...

Philips VCR Error E1 E2
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.11 месяцев назад
This VHS video came in with the report of an error message "E1" or "E2" showing. Can I fix it ? Yes I can - well sort of... Enjoy.
I use a cleaning disc which works well. Bose do not support the notion that replacing certain caps will make these things work. The lens needing cleaning is the prime suspect.
Hi Ive come to use my machine tonight not used it for a month and its developed a problem.... When i come to switch it on it switches off straight away it will not stay switched on 20 minutes before this it was fine i switched it off then cameback after 10 minutes at it started to do this my model is the Toshiba DVR20KB DVD & VHS Recorder
This tutorial was excellent, it helped me fix my partners Bose. So thanks for posting it.
Thank you very much for the video. I had exactly the same problem: a low output level on the left channel and background noise . As I am not a technician and therefore have neither the knowledge nor the specialized measuring equipment I worked by reasoning starting with the simplest things (visual inspection to check whether there is something fishy like a capacitor leaking or a burn, testing the speakers and the amplifier (Quad 405) by reversing the connections, handling the sockets, etc.). In the end the problem was a bad connection: I noticed it by lightly manipulating the socket which connects the input card with the motherboard (a black plug with red, yellow, green, white wires). A little contact cleaner spray on the male and female parts, I also re-soldered the socket and the problem was solved. I hope this can help those who are facing this problem which can have multiple causes as shown in this excellent video. Keep faith, these devices are very solid (unless they have been badly tinkered with)! PS: I bought my Quad 44/405 new when I was young and they are still in service (so do I).
Old Charlie decks, had same issue. You had to split the deck just to replace the pinch roller. I miss all faults like these. Some video heads where a sleeve bearing, I would take them apart and service them
Nice I have an RCD-38DAB+ and I think it has the same issue.
Hi, what size are the drive belts in the tape deck? I've got my father in laws old jj500 that needs new belts.
I have no idea, I have a collection of various drive belts I choose from if I cannot obtain a replacement set. Try Manatree on ebay.
great video Chas !
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
This is a great video thanks Chas. I have just bought the same model from a clearance sale and it has the dreaded switching off after a few seconds. it will play dvd's perfectly and I can press the select button for vhs and it's fine but when I try to load a tape it tries to load it and the machine shuts down completely. It would not eject the tape using the remote but I found if I held the eject button on the machine and pressed power on on the remote the tape came out ok. I did discover that the head on mine was tight and after watching your video I dismantled it and lubricated as you did and now it spins very freely. I was most disappointed when it didn't solve the problem. I'm assuming it is a mechanical issue and will try again tomorrow. Thanks again for a very informative video.
Thanks
My tray has been a problem for years and thought it was finally busted. Watched the video and just had to get the white tab back in the groove. Now works like new. Thanks a bunch.
Wow that's great to hear glad I was able to help.😊
My ql keyboard works but presses more than one key. For example if press J I get JJJJ Any ideas?
Replace the membrane it's faulty.
Güzel bir çalışma olmuş tebrik ediyorum ayrıca bilgi paylaşımınız için teşekkür ederim. :)
Thank you, happy you found it useful. :)
I loved your video, however, I didn't see you desoldering the prevention soldering point, can you confirm if it's needed to do it, I'm currently waiting for a SF101 16pin for a Sony CSF 70 unit. Thanks.
Yes, I desoldered the link after fitting the optical block and connecting the plug.
As a 'fixer' myself I had to smile as I have had similar experiences. Thanks for posting this as its exactly the 'solution' to my problem.
;)
Excellent! I'm having the same problem with my Fein Multitool. Thank you sir!
Glad it helped
Could you please give details of the tube of lubricant you used on the mechanism, I couldn't catch name from video. Thanks Steve

Volume not working
That's a shame.
I don't think I'll ever be brave enough to get near the back of a CRT. Interesting video, thanks.
Ah well that's where my 50+ years of experience (and quite a few belts) have taught me to be careful where I put my hands and know what not to touch. I'm so glad folk have the sense to leave repairs like this to us professionals.
Giving Cub monitors a new life.. Give this man an MBE.
Do they give gongs out for doing something you love doing? That would be nice.
Awww, there's my little cubbie! It looks like it gave you a bit of a fight! lol
A nice job with an excellent result.
Great job, sir!
Glad you liked it!
well come back chas hope all is well .good to see you back doing what you love.😃❤
Thanks, glad to be getting back to doing fixes. Working on another CUB monitor, seems I've become the go-to guy to get these up and running again. Vid coming soon.
Hi, just subscribed, nice channel.
Thanks for the sub!, new videos coming soon...
No worries.

HUH???
I have the Bose wave music system IV and everytime i try to insert a disc it says it's inable to read that disc, i tried multiple, same scenario, the models 417788-wms, i am thinking of cleaning the lens by watching your video on the weekend, hope it fixes it! I also don't have the controller (i found this bose for $10 CAD at a thrift store)
Good catch, remote controllers are around or you can use a one-for-all type, they work well. Cleaning the optics with an aeroduster can often fix it. Good luck. New videos coming soon.
I have this exact same model, colour, with a dodgy volume switch. Hoping a bit of spray will sort that out (it spent a couple of years in sticky Singapore, plus being transported back in a humid container). So helpful to see how to dismantle it properly - thanks so much, and how to clean it. I am also very jealous of your work station!
Good luck. Yes, it took me a while to get the workshop just right, and recollect the necessary gear. New videos coming soon.
Hi, sir same torch I replaced 2.4k resistance & 13001 transistor, but when i charge not glow even sensor works
Change the capacitor
I have the same player and it says invalid format on thw screen once powered up to the tv. What could be the cause or fix if any?
There's nothing in the manual relating to this error message, It usually refers to the type of disc inserted that cannot be read by the device. The manual says it supports these formats: BD-Video, BD 3D DVD-Video, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/-R DL (Dual Layer) VCD/SVCD Audio CD, CD-R/CD-RW, MP3 media, WMA Media , JPEG Files DivX (Ultra)/DivX Plus HD media, MKV media Maybe the disc you inserted is damaged or not one for the country you're in.?
I am watching this video for a second time and, let me say, it was worth. This man does a fantastic trouble shooting. My Deck # 2 door is not opening. I found the problem is in that sprocket gear covered by the printed board at the back of the mechanism. If I turn that gear with my finger, the door will open. I didn't see how to remove the printed board. How can that board be removed ?
I didn't have to remove the boards in the one I repaired so I would suggest making a drawing of the board and things connected to it and the screws, then undo things bit by bit. you have to unsolder the motor connections. Have a look at the manual, Page 12 Ref 11 and you'll see the procedure.
Miracle! Same model, CD not reading. Cleaned lens--no response. Optical assembly moving and tracking but no observed laser output. Decision: Scrap as beyond economic repair (even at £5 for a replacement not worth the time for a machine with a resale value around £10-15). Revised option: blow some air. Result: working perfectly. Now I suppose I'll need to reconsider the other dozen machines in the junk pile. . . Even after over 40 years in electronic maintenance (albeit not in consumer equipment) there are still lessons to be learnt!
Fab fix, well done. :-)
Hi , i have Pioneer SX 434 but the "stereo" light bulb doesn't work. The light bulb is not faulty. I don't hear stereo sound but mono in FM. It could be HA1156 ? what do you say? Thank you. Sam
It is possible, have you checked the working voltages? Do you get a strong signal on the meter for an FM stereo station? I would be inclined to check the primary rf amplifier transistors like the one I found in the video, they can go low gain.
@@ChasLarge Ok , yes I get a strong signal on the meter FM. I need to control the tensions better...Thank you. I hope to let you know news
@@ChasLarge I replaced the HA1156 integrated circuit and the stereo works! ok thanks
I'm glad you found it a simple fix because I destroyed mine taking it apart to try and replace the cable. Wish I'd seen this video first! 😭
I think I would have verified solid continuity through the whole new mains wiring before reassembling...
Sorry to hear yours was damaged, sometimes spending more time examining before diving in can be fruitful. Yes, I probably did check the cable but didn't video it?
stay away from electronic devices . i mean it
IS THAT A THREAT???😮
Dear Sir, Thank you very much for this tutorial. It is extremely helpful. I have the exact same problem. However, when I opened the inside, I realised that one of the two sockets connected to the CD unit is directly soldered to the circuit board (at 14:51 in the video). How is such a thing possible, and do I have to cut the wire completely and solder a new socket to be able to use it after changing the unit?
I cannot say I've ever come across one of these Philips units with the ribbon cable soldered onto the PCB for the laser but that does not mean it's not true. Much older CD optical blocks did use ribbons that were soldered at least one end, the other should terminate in a Plug or ZIF connector. The service manual should show an exploded view with the connectors and the part number for the block could be searched for which will result in the correct item.
hi chas not had a video from you in a wile hope you are ok and not unwell miss your videos kind regards penfold178
Hi, thanks for the kind thoughts, family illness has kept me away from the bench and then I caught Covid too which thankfully I'm now over. Jobs are piling up so more videos to come soon. Cheers Chas.
I think you've persuaded me that these newer all-in-ones are more trouble than they're worth. I like fixing stuff but I lack the patience (and arguably the expertise - that would have taken me quite a while to work out if at all!) to be bothered with that, for what is a modern device with all the inferior Chinesium goodness that implies. I admire anyone who gets the job done though!
Thanks for the compliment, I love doing repairs, ever since I was at school, it was a career I thought would last a lifetime but sadly, the newer cheaper stuff made doing repairs uneconomical and they are not really worth doing them, so I concentrate on older stack systems.
Хочу таку деку! Всім доброго вечора, з Незламного Харкова! Super Video! 📸
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :-)
My philips dvd750vr dvd vcr combo turns off with display showing err 1 when i turn it back on it spits the tape out, I've already cleaned the mode switch
Sometimes you need to keep the top cover on as too much light can confuse the optical sensors. Usually, tapes being ejected is a symptom of Head or Capstan Rotation errors. Do they turn? What happens if you manually load the carriage without a tape in, i.e., holding the flap latches and moving the carrier forward.
I have a BBC model B and I'm looking for a Cub montior takes me straight back to school days! I'm a bit apprehensive about getting one as I have no knowledge of how to fix them.
I would recommend trying to find one that has been refurbished and recapped, repairs are only easy for someone who has the knowledge of the circuitry and is aware of the dangers involved in working with mains operated equipment. Not just mains voltages but EHT voltages. You might be better off using a video to VGA adaptor with the BBC and a modern monitor. They are cheap and readily available. If you do buy a CUBBY and need it repaired feel free to get in touch. 😊😊
I had the same issue. Taking the tray out and putting it back in worked for me too. Thanks.
Glad it helped, well done on the fix. 😉
Thanks for this. I had the same error on my Fein Multimaster and this helped enormously. I added a heat shrink sleeve under the rubber cable sleeve when reassembling as it’s not a good fit. Adding the extra sleeve makes the rubber sleeve fit much tighter and no wiggle room (wiggle probably caused the cable problem in the first place).
Excellent!, well done and good thinking. 👍
I would update the bios using a cpu that did work and ram that did work. go into the bios with gfx card connected, then proceeed to go to internal devices and find the output and instead of it being on auto or pcie change it to inbuilt.
ok i see whats going on, gonna take some time to explain will email you.
No point, they tested it again with another GPU and got the same results so they refunded me.
Good Evening My Dad has a RCD M38 DAB Receiver He cannot pre set the channels could you please let me know if this receiver has n internal battery that would hold this information and it’s failed. I followed your channel to him. I would be grateful of any help. Many thanks Susan Morrell.
There is no backup battery in this unit, the channels - all settings in fact - are stored in an Electronically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) Integrated Circuit. I would suspect that the system has developed an error. The only way to clear this memory error is to unplug the unit from the mains for 1 hour then plug it back in and it should go into auto tune mode, once that is complete, you should be able to manually tune it in.
Got the drive opening and closing again, it was misaligned too. But i think iw tried too hard earlier, as it wont read any discs anymore :(
Try aeroduster (compressed air) on the optics and clean the main objective lens with a cotton bud with Isopropyl Alcohol.
Have you got RAM installed?
YES, 2 DIMMS VERY VISIBLE!
@@ChasLarge I'd try different RAM or at least try with each stick in turn. There's usually a particular DIMM socket that needs to be populated for POST in a one DIMM configuration. Did you send the memory back to CCL too?
@@ChasLarge Also try plugging in a CPU fan. Probably teaching my grandmother to suck eggs but thought I'd say it.
Having been asked by CCL to make this video public, I am now turning Monetize ON.
Hi Chas, do you need to plug in the 12v cpu connector too from PSU to motherboard? Could try unplugging battery to reset bios maybe.
Yes, this was plugged in.
@@ChasLargeThe 8 pin connector near to CPU sorry I didn't see that plugged in.
@@sdecks8078 it wasn’t when I started recording but noticed that before powering on and plugged it in. I did check what would happen if it wasn’t plugged in and you get no beeps and the cpu fan does not start. Not surprising, no power, no cpu operation.
@@ChasLargehave you tried reseating the CPU, plus adding a memory module perhaps?
@@sdecks8078 Yup.
