_"We like to condemn the evil system but simultaneously reap the benefits, just like the founding fathers. We're no better."_ Andrew, that's very deep and sobering. In college, I studied for investigative journalism but changed majors when I realized that you can investigate and journal all you want but that whatever media outlet you work for will edit everything down to what fits their personal narrative. You should be invited on to MSM channels like FOX, CNN, MSNBC, and CBS so they all can get a view into what unbiased reporting really looks like. 5-star stuff, bro. Very well done.
"You should be invited on to MSM channels like FOX, CNN, MSNBC, and CBS so they all can get a view into what unbiased reporting really looks like." For the reasons you said you switched majors for, this must not happen or Andrew should turn them down. They can watch him from afar for all we care.

List of causes of the Civil War-
Harpers Ferry
On the night of October 16, 1859, Brown and a band of followers seized the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), in what is believed to have been an attempt to arm a slave insurrection. (Brown denied this at his trial, but evidence indicated otherwise.) They were dislodged by a force of U.S. Marines led by Army lieutenant colonel Robert E. Lee.
Brown was swiftly tried for treason against Virginia and hanged. Southern reaction initially was that his acts were those of a mad fanatic, of little consequence. But when Northern abolitionists made a martyr of him, Southerners came to believe this was proof the North intended to wage a war of extermination against white Southerners. Brown’s raid thus became a step on the road to war between the sections.
States' Rights
The idea of states' rights was not new to the Civil War. Since the Constitution was first written there had been arguments about how much power the states should have versus how much power the federal government should have. The southern states felt that the federal government was taking away their rights and powers.
Political power
That was not enough to calm the fears of delegates to an 1860 secession convention in South Carolina. To the surprise of other Southern states-and even to many South Carolinians-the convention voted to dissolve the state’s contract with the United States and strike off on its own.
South Carolina had threatened this before in the 1830s during the presidency of Andrew Jackson, over a tariff that benefited Northern manufacturers but increased the cost of goods in the South. Jackson had vowed to send an army to force the state to stay in the Union, and Congress authorized him to raise such an army (all Southern senators walked out in protest before the vote was taken), but a compromise prevented the confrontation from occurring.
Perhaps learning from that experience the danger of going it alone, in 1860 and early 1861 South Carolina sent emissaries to other slave holding states urging their legislatures to follow its lead, nullify their contract with the United States and form a new Southern Confederacy. Six more states heeded the siren call: Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Others voted down secession-temporarily. When President Lincoln called for Volunteers to invade the south, six southern states voted to join the Confederacy.
The issue of slavery
The burning issue that led to the disruption of the union was the debate over the future of slavery. Secession brought about a war in which the Northern and Western states and territories fought to preserve the Union, and the South fought to establish Southern independence as a new confederation of states under its own constitution.
Most of the states of the North, meanwhile, one by one had gradually abolished slavery. A steady flow of immigrants, especially from Ireland and Germany during the potato famine of the 1840s and 1850s, insured the North a ready pool of laborers, many of whom could be hired at low wages, diminishing the need to cling to the institution of slavery. Child labor was also a growing trend in the North.
The agrarian South utilized slaves to tend its large plantations and perform other duties. On the eve of the Civil War, some 4 million Africans and their descendants toiled as slave laborers in the South. Slavery was interwoven into the Southern economy although only a relatively small portion of the population actually owned slaves.

@@SouthernGentleman So you're saying it was a country attacking another country. The south still lost.
@@SouthernGentleman An excellent article. I wish there were more like it in comment sections. Unfortunately, you will find ignorant and vile insults against any posts that don't fit the leftist narrative, which is "beyond the pale" in stupidity and fantasy land.
Southern Gentleman Slavery is widely accepted as the reason for the Civil War. Heck, even a simple Wikipedia search shows that answer. There are dozens upon dozens upon dozens of quotes from generals claiming the exact same thing as well. I don’t know why people come out and say what you said. The Confederates are nothing more than a bunch of racist traitors. Here’s a nice quote from a curator of history at the West Point Museum by the name of Michael J.McCafee “there are no monuments that mention the name Benedict Arnold. What does this have to do with the southern monuments honouring the political and military leaders of the confederacy? They, like Arnold, are traitors. They turned their backs on their nation, their oath, and the sacrifices of their ancestors in the war for independence… They attempted to destroy their nation to defend chattel slavery and from a sense that as white men they were innately superior to all other races. They fought for white racial supremacy. That is why monuments glorifying them and their cars should be removed. Leave monuments marking their participation on the battlefield of the war, but tear down those that only commemorate the intolerance violence and hate that inspired their attempt to destroy the American nation”.

I dont think its fair to judge people from the past by 2020 standards... whats right and wrong now is alot different than right and wrong then. Only 4 to 5% of americans owned slaves, they cost as much as a sports car does now... the average white man was to poor to even own a slave but they want you to believe everybody had one. You want reparations? talk to the big companys that used slave labor.
that doesn't give you an excuse to be a bigot in the present time.
@@johnnybgood4149 However, the same sentiment from the past is still here and affecting the present. Racism wasn't born yesterday. As for reparations, maybe the black can use the same plan the Jews used for the reparations they received from German gov.

Yep, but when you get into politics like this they often excuse and dismiss their double standards. I wonder if he holds the exact same opinion for Palestine... I bet he does not. And what is even more interesting is that many Democrats will support what Andrew said even though they hate it when others say the exact same things. The North did not set the slaves free to help the slaves, they set the slaves free to hurt the slave owners. This would be an example of the right thing for the wrong reasons. The proof is that they did not give slaves rights or even treated them like humans afterwards. They just set them free and left them to die if that was their fate and then we have decades of systemic racism and jim crow. I thought the north cared?

“We like to condemn the evil system, while simultaneously reaping the benefits.”
Damn. That’s some truth right there.
I don’t agree with that line. You can still criticize the system wanting it to be better while participating in it. I mean, what do you want those who ”condemn the evil system” to do? Go live in the forest? That's like saying to the peasants in feudal society that they can't criticize the system because the rags they are wearing were made under feudalism. Lol
thats how progress takes place. being silent is noway to get the next version.
@@LeonWagg 1 bad apple spoils the bunch... You need to take responsibility for your participation in the decline of society. If you think you are in no way responsible then you are wrong. Read the gulag archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.
John Spencer You are thrown into the system, and as an individual, you are not capable of breaking out of it. You need collective actions, and that what happened, for example, when we broke out of feudalism. Yes, you have to take responsibility, but precisely because of that, you need to criticize the system (and in the same way yourself) radically. Blaming yourself wouldn't help but take responsibility and stand up to demand change is the way to go.
What the fuck does my comment have to do with Solzhenitsyn? But tbh Solzhenitsyn was a pathetic fascist, and yeah, I did read him. His wife said in her autobiography book that ”Gulag Archipelago” is a fictional and nonscientific book. She wrote that she was “perplexed” by the fact that the book was accepted by the western (capitalist) world as “the solemn, ultimate truth,” saying that the significance of his ex-husband's work had been “overestimated and wrongly appraised.” Furthermore, she unveiled that Solzhenitsyn himself did not regard the book as “historical research, or scientific research, but it was rather a “camp folklore” collection. She said in the end that the book isn't the work that should be taken seriously or accepted as a valid source.
If you want to be a good anti-communist, read Varlam Shalamov’s The Kolyma Tales. It's literally a masterpiece and way better than Gulag Archipelago.

Confederates like Lee were anti slavery, U.S veterans, every race fought for the confederacy, last Confederate General a Native American, and Longstreet shot defending African Americans in New Orleans
@sam mayne Wrong. No confederate was convicted of treason, the north shot first at Harpers Ferry, secession wasn’t illegal until after the war in 1869, and confederates were U.S veterans of 4 wars. Joseph Wheeler led the Rough Riders and African American buffalo soldiers in Cuba, James Longstreet became a U.S General again and protected African Americans in New Orleans and was shot, John Castleman trained U.S soldiers in Spanish American war, Robert E Lee was top graduate of West Point and hero of Mexican American war, Mosby was Grant’s consul to Hong Kong, and so on.
They’re no different than England celebrating William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, Oliver Cromwell, Robin Hood, George Washington, and so on.
Please learn, not hate
@sam mayne All good. It’s illegal now though
@@SouthernGentleman If Lee was personally anti-slavery, it was not a strong enough conviction to prevent him from fighting to preserve it. Also, he is on record as saying some pretty damned eyebrow-raising shit about black folks as a race.
Claiming the Confederacy was fighting to preserve states rights and exercising their right to secede is misinformation at best and outright revisionist deception at worst. The leaders of the Confederacy did not mince words when it came to the reasons for their actions. I recommend every one look up Alexander Stephens's (Vice President of the Confederacy) Cornerstone speech. The Confederacy was conceived to perpetuate slavery. Any assertions about nobler intentions are attempts at obfuscating that reality.
@@kristopherjon6496 Wrong. The Union had 4 slave states in 1861, 5 in 1862, 7 in 1864, and Ulysses Grant was a owner. The north wasn’t fighting to end it and the Confederacy wasn’t fighting to keep it. No matter what side you chose it had slavery.
The modern day myth by socialist revisionists that all confederates were evil slave owners fighting to keep slavery is a great injustice in this country. They said look up the VICE President’s speech on his personal goals in a nation where 70% of the confederacy didn’t have slavery and they ignore the PRESIDENT of the Confederacy saying “We Are Fighting for Independence, Not Slavery”. - Jefferson Davis President of the Confederacy to Edward Kirk. @@mattkeller5913 yeah I agree, also he was a bit too sarcastic . Also how can you end a fight without someone losing tho?
"judge them within the morality of their time". This statement is KEY! People like to take the actions of the past and view them under the lens of today. That isn't how it works.
Most Confederate monuments were erected in the Jim Crow era to further the KKK's agenda of racial division. The morality of the time after the civil war was not to erect monuments. Robert E. Lee opposed them, writing, “I think it well, moreover, not to keep open the sores of war, but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife and to commit to oblivion the feelings it engendered.”
@@melissahill7930 cool, then everyone in the past was wrong. nice lens. glad we can move forward.

@El ganso Loco Like I said, EVERYONE in the past was wrong. Find me a civilization that has done nothing wrong and I will call you a liar. GLAD WE CAN MOVE ON NOW.
(el ganso, you do realize murder and slavery were actually pretty tolerated for a long time? Not trying to insult you here, but you should maybe spend a bit less time crying about things that don't matter and more time reading history books. And treason formed this beautiful country.)
@El ganso Loco no offenes mate, but looking at european history, they thought it to be quite normal to have slaves and conquer each other all the time (medieval Times, Roman Times, ancient greeks, also ancient egypt, ... ) You used to bow to the strongest Person/group/nation.
That was completely normal until enlightenment (17something).
(Today we view it as bad and evil and thats a good thing, but considering the circumstances until 1700 it was pretty normal)

Surrendering and quiting is the best way to honor the confederate flag .
Quitters

@undefined bs it was for their rights to keep slaves to yes it was over slavery
@undefined bs the entire south economy was based on agriculture worked by slaves , if slavery was ended it meant their entire economy would fail so yes it was over states right to own slaves . God this traitors still defending the confederate we should have hanged every leader publicly instead of glorifying them by making statues of them , who the fuck make statues of losers strange behaviour .

“we like to condemn the evil system but simultaneously reap the benefits. we judge the people of the past and the people of the future will judge us. time turns everyone into a bigot.”
That statement is not realistic. Why?
1) our system is built to be self-governed, striving for a better tomorrow. You know "a more perfect union".
2) it is possible to critique a bad aspect of a system, while benefiting from other parts of the system. If your house has plumbing issues, you don't demolish the whole house, you simply fix the plumbing.
"It's easy to judge people in the past by our current moral standards" is so true. Too many people think they are morally superior to their ancestors but the truth is they would do just as bad things if they grew up in that era
Meh same time those people held slaves their were active abolitionist fighting for slaves to be free. That whole “judging by modern standards” is a cop out for all the weak ppl who were to scared to stand up to something they knew was wrong.

Look over there, it's a rainbow flag... that is sent by the devil to be a sign! ... if you read sum satanic scriptures you'd know... but you haven't been shown that, yet... so your fine with it...
zanccarrdo people fought for abolition of slaves but didn’t fight for civil rights. Abe Lincoln thought slavery was wrong but civil rights didn’t matter. Even among the “good” there is bad in that time
Andrew Schulz packs more humor and common sense into a 5 minute video than Trevor Noah would ever hope to in 30 minutes.
Can't argue that. I truly admire Stewart, don't think you can be a patriotic American and argue otherwise considering what he has attempted to do for the first responders of 9/11, but Noah has maybe a half hour total out of hours of commentary that is worth anything. Its really quite sad to be honest.

Raja Ronaldo oh here we go. I don’t care about party, I care about ideology and the ideology that loved slavery over country was conservative. White conservative.
@@edilangsultan3522 _The Party of Traitors back then are..._
Irrelevant. Not all Democrats were siding with the Confederacy. They should be judged for their actions now, and BOTH parties are traitors to the American People for putting greed and desire for power above their duty to the People. That the American People are also at fault for not drop kicking every last one of them out and demanding things like term limits on Congress is on us.

Damn, these truths are going to hurt some people's fragile feelings.
Facts
Que_Rico you are a symbol of oppression
So should we get rid of the democratic party since they where the Confederacy
There are fragile feelings on both sides. Truth does not equal whatever BS political ideology, left or right, you stuffed your mind with. Also, like Andrew said, not all statues/monuments are symbols of oppression and some of our over-reaction right now is going to look really shitty on our future generation when they look at us and say, "damn, our parent's virtue signaling past looks really hypocritical when they didn't bat an eye wearing and using products made by poverty stricken third world sweat/slave shops!"
You lefties are missing the point. Go ahead and bring them down, they will not be missed. Just remember, you’re taking down history in order to become it and post it on the gram. You’re effectively doing what this generation of entitled assholes have devolved to. You guys swear we live in a oppressed society, yet there are no laws that say any one race is entitled to more or less. Do people of color have it rough? Sure. But everybody is eating a shit sandwich. Sort yourselves out. The America I love, let’s you express your views, racist and moral, and because of this free form of expression, only the best views rise to the top. It’s the only effective way to mitigate racism. The idea of ending anything is flawed.
