This week, Jason and Derek travel to Detroit to check out the Detroit Concours d'Elegance - and of course Jason's first move is to go over to the RADWOOD-Era cars! There's an Alpine V6 Turbo that immediately captures his attention - and then he's distracted with a Ford Raptor-swapped Delorean with 450 hp and a six-speed manual.
On closer inspection, and after instruction from Hyphen, there are other fabulous cars. For example, an incredible one-of-400 Series 70 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Broughams, a pillarless, hand-built hardtop coupe with a stainless-steel roof that cost more than a Rolls-Royce. And a Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder, one of the most valuable Ferraris ever.
But the true highlight of the episode is a conversation with Richard Vaughan, Jason's longtime friend and storied designer. Richard started his career by designing the original Lincoln Navigator, and most recently worked on the Rivian R1T's interior. But the coolest part about him is his cars: he owns an original Aston Martin Lagonda sedan, several Bentleys and Rolls-Royces, and of course a Sacco-era Mercedes W124 300CE Coupe in Smoke Silver.
The Carmudgeon Show was recorded live in front of an audience at the show, while sitting on beautiful and comfortable Recaro chairs - and is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network. - Авто/Мото
The amount of unwanted swearing made this even better. 😂
Minivans are criminally underrated.
Some of the most fun i've ever had behind the wheel of a car was when drag racing my Odyssey, especially against people who didn't know they were racing, lol.
Picture this: two left turn lanes onto the freeway onramp, Mitsu Evo 8 waiting at the red light in the leftmost lane as i pull up next to it on the right.
He has the "short" path, but i have the advantage of knowing this is a race.
So, i get a much better tree, because i'm paying attention to when the cross-traffic light turns red.
But i don't want it to look obvious yet that we're racing, so instead of a "launch", where i would be one-wheel peeling all the way around the corner, i just "proceed briskly".
I make up the extra distance around the corner, so that now we are nose-to-nose as the "acceleration run" up to freeway speed begins with a 10mph roll race...
So, he hasn't quite yet grasped that we're racing. He "should" have the right-of-way when we reach the merge point (about 150 yards out at this point), and he "should" have no problem being the 1st car to get there.
If i were in his shoes, at this point i would've been thinking: "Huh, that Odyssey driver's being awfully considerate to the people behind him at the light by being ready for driving instead of screaming at the kids in the back" but definitely not thinking "this van thinks he can take me"
So, current look on the driver's face: "mildly startled" - to see the van "even", but again, i had a better jump off the line, so its to be expected.
But when he clutches in to grab 2nd, i stab the gas, hit the big cam, and redline shift to 2nd (column shift drag racing is a lot trickier than flappy paddles, but i've got practice at this point).
His current expression: "amused disbelief" - is this van actually trying to race me?
So he mats the throttle, but by this point my 2nd gear had already engaged and before he builds boost, my vtec kicked in yo.
His current expression: "bewildered" - what the actual f? That van has an intake?
So, half a car length ahead, i grab 3rd, and he's finally on boost, but the momentum loss as he shifts to third gives me a full car length.
His current expression: "frustrated" - that this van is pulling on him.
By the time we both get to the top of third, he pulls closer, but then loses the ground he made up when he clutches in for 4th as my 4th engages.
His current expression: "stunned" - I'm not gonna catch this ridiculous effin van before we have to merge.
And with blinker on, i lead us both into traffic at 20mph above the flow of traffic, lol.
I ease off the gas as I'm gauging our openings, and I check my rear view one more time...
His current expression: ROFL
A 1/4 mile or so later, he pulls up alongside me, all smiles and thumbsups, asking for a rematch. I politely decline. In a fair fight I know he'd pull me.
One must know how to pick one's battles when one is trolling with a minivan.
TLDR:
2002 Honda Odyssey: $4500
Diy intake with a cone filter: $50
Removing 250lbs of seats: free
Watching the other guy go 🥱🤔🤭😳😠😡🤬😵💫🤣👍😁👍: priceless
49:30 Jason inadvertently describes how Subaru is still in business.
Crickets, All I heard was crickets! But that's ok, you two are the Abbott and Costello, Martin and Lewis, Batman and Robin of Auto Journalist! A real dynamic duo. Jason Camisa is a true Nation Treasure, just like Nick Cage!
Loved listening to this podcast. Congrats Jason on winning the award for your series truly deserved
Can't wait to hear myself laugh in this one. Was a great show! Hope to see you back in Detroit next year!
Please, PLEASE give us your impressions of your time in the Mitten, Derek! Jason's stories of living in/around Detroit with his car collection (and the realizations that his cars aren't for this area) have been validating for someone like myself--we want your input, too!
My thoughts exactly, Jason made me realize why I hate living here lol worst roads in the country
You had me at “ladies and gentlemen…”
I'm glad that you had great weather for the event! That's the snapshot of Detroit that Hyphen should always retain. Don't bring him back in February. 😂
My dad bought a 67 Lincoln Continental Convertible when I was 20. The thing was as long as my Silverado 3500 crew cab long bed DRW. The tech in it was unbelievable for the 60s! So much space, so smooth, and when you open up the suicide doors people lose it! I miss that car.
57 min of Jason trying not to curse 😂
Awesome show guys!
I missed the live podcast, but I did manage to run into Hypen on Saturday morning when both of us were looking at the 1920s cars and the Rolls Royce he talks about. I agree 100%, that Silver Rolls Royce was stunning, a little more than the Cadillac V16. Keep up the great Carmudgeon-ing
Wait, i thought they were gonna do a Q&A as well at this live event?
Hyphen with the perfect sitting robot pose.
Derek sits like the generic male in the driver seat of all racing games.
Default character in test drive unlimited lmao
I hope you guys made Richard write his name on a paper for your guest wall!
I'm really sad I didn't hear about this because I'm 20 minutes south of Detroit but at least there is this video!
I was there and how did I miss these two?!?
Yes!!! A Lagonda fan!!!!
Awesome GTI chair 0:43
How can you do a cutout of @Jason without choosing the cross dressing Marilyn Monroe from his Rolls convertible review 😂
Or him cross dressed on the drag strip
Quick question: You guys often talk about going on rallies, especially in the Bay Area, and I was curious whether there was a instagram account or forum board that posts rallies. Thx for great content 😁 👍
There are a couple - DWA! (Driving While Awesome!) does the best... there are also smaller ones like the Breakfast Club Rally up in the North Bay. And thanks!
The Citroen needed all those special starting instructions because it was using a Maserati V6 engine.
Caddy? You own a Caddy? That is, as well as the slowest, is the coolest truck/car ever....
I miss my Caddy so much. Had oem+ parts from a euro 8v and US 16v gti, mk1 Jetta gli, an 8v and a 16v Rocco, a mk3 jetta, a Fox, a g60 Corrado - it was my favorite Lego ever. 😥
Edit: I re-listened, trying to find where Richard mentions a caddy that isn't a massive gm product, and I can't find it.
Or were you talking about Jason? He has a ca_bb_ie, not a ca_dd_y. (Oh, forgot to include that one in my list of donor VWs, I had a bitchbasket dash swap, too)
Im pretty sure its 16v swapped as well, he built it so he wouldn’t have to worry about driving his Scirroco 16v all the time (because he loves that car and doesn’t want it getting destroyed by an idiot).
From someone who lives in germany, car culture is still a thing here. Especially beautiful old cars are still very much appreciated. It's mostly just Berlin where people are that anti car. As long as you have tasteful cars and don´t drive like an a..hole, it's fine.
You need to look up the supercharged LS4 DeLorean. I can't remember the name of the guy who did it, but I garuntee that It'll be one of the first results
I wish this show had inserts...so many cars mentioned that don't form a picture in my mind cause I am not familiar with the American classics era (1940s-1960s (pre-muscle stuff))
Im scared of this… just started watching… 😂
For the Q&As, Mk7 or MK4 GTI? Does the VR6 make for a better driving experience? What works better as a one car solution?
"i feel like im standing next to Carlos Lago."
*Remembers Jason and Carlos' MT bit*
Heh
He has a 6000 STE AWD?! I thought they were all dead lol
The part at the end: i am with Derek on this: "we hope", or let's say you hope, i have no hope that they will allow anyone to drive the old stuff.
See the germans have an altime high in "classic car" registrations because people don't want to put up with modern sh$$ and buy 25 and 30+ year old cars and register them as classic cars. And the increase in numbers isn't unoticed by the green party and envirementalist groups (or let's say who call themselves envirementalists).
The "glue to the pavement" people are a phenomenon in most of europe. To me they are like football hooligans: they chose a good sounding "banner" under which they give others a bad time as a sport. And with doing that they achieve the opposite of what they claim to aim for.
They mostly make people annoyed at the thing they claim they are doing it for.

47:59 I'm like this xD And I'm definitely crazy. I know there are better cars than my Toyota by many measures. But I want my car to start every time. So.... Toyota.
2:35 start
Sadly Derek Clapton didn’t make an appearance
What is the red car in the title card?
alpine a310!
Man, I couldn't tell from that rear 3/4 angle. Absolutely stunning car.
It's my Alpine V6 Turbo! Actually, the generation after the A310
@@Ramblin_DMC gorgeous ride!
Thanks!

"...Carlos Lago ... if you remember that." Confirmed clone/bot
Getting to be Iike classic Top Gear. More car stunts will finish it off
A310 ❤!
V6 Turbo!
Cammisa missed the best minivan boat big time. The Dodge needs that short gearing to post the same times as a 20yr old Odessey, and is obviously less reliable...
Jason's efforts to keep the language PG-13 are amusing. Occasionally you can see a blood vessel on his temple throb a bit.
Detroit will NEVER shame V8's. The louder and smokier the better!
Looks like we got a couple of potty mouths here lol
I still don't understand how the "Germans gear cars for top speed" translates into 4,000 RPM at 70 MPH. Just effin' change to a higher gear! I don't believe the revs will drop too low -- you're in the top 50% of RPM range of that car anyway. And I don't see it being in top gear at 70 MPH at 4,000 when the car's top speed is 120ish MPG at, what, no more than 6,000 (for an old Mercedes) -- that would mean gaining 41% of its overall speed in just 2,000 RPM, ie a 1/3 of its RPM range.
ill never forgive jerry seinfeld for making society think blazers and jeans are ok
Even better than electric cars becoming more common: Investments in public transportation! Then the roads will be even more free for enthusiasts and people can shut up about "how bad electric cars are for the environment" since we will produce few cars.
