Get Your Life Together Challenge: Sleep Schedule 😴

  • Starting the Get Your Life Together Challenge Series! This week, I'm focusing on fixing my sleep schedule, waking up and going to bed earlier. This is my biggest weakness, so bear with me lol. I'm a total night owl & have never been a morning person. For me, this challenge isn't about perfection, but about incremental progress! Any tips would also be appreciated 😸
The reason I wanted to start this series is bc there are a lot of "get your life together" videos out there, but they all seem to pack everything into one video/day, making it seem easy or that it's possible to get your entire life together that quickly. In reality, changing your life takes effort, consistency, willpower, patience, and time. This series is my live attempt to take a slower method and focus on a different area of my life each week.
Though I'm focusing on one area a week, I'm going to work on continuing and building all the improvements as we go. Hope you join me in this challenge! :) #GYLT #GYLTchallenge

@@eiaeheh For me, its because I love mornings. Waking up early and have sometime to sit down and reset myself through morning pages helps me be more happy and productive throughout the day, especially if its a long one or when I have to meet up with a lot of people. Plus, I sleep a bit early so my body just wakes up at that time. Oh and also its prayer time for us Muslims(winter time). My day does not flow well if I did not have that time to just sit down and be with myself before interacting with others.

No matter what time you want to start your day, waking up just an hour earlier or so allows you to start it better. and you know what? you just showed us that you can live your dream life and be successful without having to wake up early :)

Wow, thanks for your kindness & tips in the comments! I was afraid of uploading this video bc it didn't show a major improvement, I was disappointed and afraid of being judged. But I'm glad I still posted it. I realized I had a lot more to say about this topic:
1️⃣ There's this societal belief that you have to wake up early and be a morning person to be a responsible, successful person. I wanted to show that it's not necessary - you can sleep in, wake up late, and still get things done and succeed. I've had this sleep schedule all my life (except for school, when I really struggled to wake up at 6am everyday). My natural sleep cycle might be genetic/influenced, as my dad is a night owl and wakes up very late too. He's been waking up at 2-4pm all my life (when I was a kid, and still to this day) and he still manages to succeed in a big way. I owe it to him for showing me that you don't have to wake up early to succeed, run multiple businesses, and support your family. The sad thing is being shamed for having a different sleep schedule than most people - I still deal with a little shame and guilt about that from society & the people around me.
2️⃣"If you now work a job where you don't have to wake up early, why try to force your natural sleep cycle to wake up earlier?" The reality is, the rest of the world functions on a morning person's schedule, so it's harder to get some things done outside of business hours, when people get off work. I still have to work with others so our work times need to overlap, even if for a couple hours. Also, I mentioned that sunlight is important for filming videos, and in the fall/winter the sun sets earlier ~4:30pm. That's why I have to wake up earlier these seasons, so I can get more sunlight in. In the summer I can sleep in and still film videos til 8pm (when the sun sets), I love it so much. I would love if the sun could set at 8pm all year round 😋
3️⃣ I'm so glad I didn't choose to do a 5am wake up challenge because that's not realistic or desirable for me at all. Even though my schedule is outside of the ordinary, it's not about the time you wake up, it's about the quality of rest you get and how amazing it makes you feel in your life. Let your sleep support your mental & physical health and find a schedule that makes you feel the best! Good luck!
P.S. A lot of you mentioned the book that explains our internal body clock: Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker - thank you! Just wanted to share it again here for anyone who needs it.

🌟 Hey Aileen, something that helped me waking up early without snoozing my alarm is the 5 seconds rule by Mel Robbins. The alarm sounds, I count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and I get out of bed with full force... then I turn off my alarm. Don't touch your phone until you're out of bed. It really helps.

I believe the key is consistency- you need to go to bed and get up at the same time every day. And don’t take a nap for the first week. It is tough, but letting yourself sleep in at the beginning makes the process take longer. I have a son and 2 dogs so sleeping in doesn’t really happen but having a better sleep schedule does make me feel better and be more productive overall.

I am on that Vampire night owl schedule and have been on it for over a year. I need to reverse this in the next couple weeks and I don’t know how I’m gonna break this habit. It’s just so hard for me to wind down at night and my boyfriend gets off work at 12:30 AM so I’m naturally up late at night because that’s when I see him. But if I want to go to my parents house for Christmas and see my niece and nephew and my sister whom I have not seen in four years they all go to bed at 10 PM and are up by 7 AM. They are not OK with me sleeping in past 10 AM.

This was so honest that it's very refreshing! I think one thing that sabotages you is the fact that you put multiple alarms. I did this exact same thing before, but when I decided to change it to just one alarm, it really made a change, mostly because at some point you freak out you're going to sleep in if you don't move right with that single alarm. I admit at first it was tough, but at the long term it was the only thing that worked for me to make it a consistent habit :) *Good luck*

So, I'm also a nightowl. I used to think this was something people made up as an excuse as to why they stayed up late and got up late. However, I read a book called "why we sleep" by Matthew Walker and it taught me so much! Being a nightowl is a real, scientific thing! We have an internal bodyclock, and for nightowls it's basically impossible to go to sleep before midnight. I won't go into the detailed science of it but we basically don't have the right chemicals in our body before that telling us to go to sleep. For us, going to bed around 1am or 2am and getting up at 9 or 10am is the best! So, your idea of getting up at 9.30 is great!
Ever since reading this book I've really focused more on getting the right amount of sleep and it feels really good when I get it right!

Thanks for your honesty..no one else seems to be willing to admit they sleep after 2am and rise close to noon. Over the years I've worked to flip that script in my head, and also try to wake up more consistently. It's an on-going challenge, but seeing a video like this really helps take the stigma out of being a night person and it boosts the spirit. Thanks for sharing! I also battle depression since a long time so for so many years I woke up at sunset which made me feel worse and increased my depression so I have been trying so hard to get out of bed with all of this, but I always fail. Whenever I watch a video about sleep, I see how people easily wake up that made me feel like a loser, so this is why I loved your video coz u showed the reality and that it is hard for some people to wake up early and to change this daily habit and that it takes time. So thank you because u made me feel better and that am not alone in this, and I will continue waking up early and hope we both succeed. Luv u Aileen :*

Oh my word, I'm so glad you did this video because I have been struggling for years no with sleep. I struggle a lot with oversleeping and losing a lot of time in my day because of it. I don't get to do a lot of things like breakfast dates or gym because of it. I'm definitely going to try the challenge and I'm just glad I'm not alone and some sleepy weirdo like I thought all this time

Wow, this made me think about how it is all about the mindset and also, how important it really is to just focus on YOUR own best.
When I wake up at 10 am, I seriously want to die haha. It feels so late for me, and I'm feeling that guilt throughout the entire day. Waking at 7-8 is ideal for me and what I always aim for. Yet, for you, 10 am would be ideal and much better than 1pm.
So although it is great to collect inspiration and motivation from one another, it really shows how the most important thing is to focus on yourself and listen to your body and gut feeling and do what's right for you.

Wow - this is amazing to me. I couldn’t imagine sleeping that much. If I happen to sleep past 8 I generally wake up with a migraine. I have been getting up at 5 am to finish a book I am writing and while it was challenging the first few days, my body adopted to the change and now I naturally tend to wake up a bit before 5. I guess we all have very different nocturnal systems. It’s a good thing you have a successful RUclips channel so you can support yourself and not have to comply to traditional work schedules. Best of luck in your continued quest to master this challenge!

Wow! Feeling like a weirdo now. Aileen, I believe I'm your opposite. I really enjoy waking up at 5 am and if I wake after 10 I feel like I wasted half of my day. And it doesn't matter what time I go to bed, I can't sleep past 10 am. Kind of weird cause I really like to sleep. Is there someone like me?

    • @LivyBennet

@Brittany FFF True. What bothers me is that I can't sleep in even when I need to. Like when I go to bed around 2 am and I automatically wake up at 7 am and can't fall asleep anymore. It's really annoying. I go through the day already exhausted because I didn't sleep well.

    • @Inekane
      @Inekane 5 лет назад +7

I started to wake up at 4am just because I have zero energy after work and I can’t focus on my passions so I shifted my schedule to do things I love before work and sleep after work & gym. I wake up usually happy and motivated because I start the day with things I choose to do and than I go to work to pay the bills, go home exhausted and I can go straight to bed without guilt.

    • @LivyBennet

@@Inekane Wow! That's really brave, girl. 😉 I couldn't do it. 4 am is way too early for me. But I hope it's working for you. Most of my friends think I'm crazy for getting up at 5 because I'm a freelancer and I could sleep in, but I can't. It would kill my productivity for the day.

PS: I think you are amazing and most creatives are night owls. I've been a mess this winter and got thrown off schedule bc I haven't been working a traditional job so I set my own schedule, much like you, which can be a little too freeing and end up cycling out of control. I was on a great schedule going to bed by 8:30pm PST or 9pm, then waking up at 530 or 6 am but got messed up almost a month ago and have been sleeping my days away. Ive been waking up at 3 or 4 PM bc I am anxious and can't sleep when I dont get out into nature. Then it's dark by the time I'm up so I feel sad, I criticize and beat myself up then feel like a loser. It's very unhealthy and I will change this; but I feel like being asleep when the sun is down and waking up with the sun is the best way to live a healthy life!! I've never been strong in this area but am open to change. I'm always, everyday, working to change and improve myself in the best ways I can! I don't judge you and anyone who does is just self reflecting. Look into sleep studies and look into why the hours before midnight are most beneficial to your sleep cycle. If you can even get into bed at 10 PM I promise your whole life will feel more energized and happy. Also if you are anything like me if I'm woken during sleep I have to start over from then and get at least 4 to 8 more hours regardless of when I was woken which is a nightmare with a partner on a different sleep schedule. Wishing you peace, lots more self love and acceptance and thank you for being you. You are sensational. 💖 You can follow me on IG @yoga4joy. Namaste 💓Joy☮

It’s hard, b/c I still stay up until 1-2 am so I’m down sleep. But I won’t lie, it sucks. The key is to be disciplined and not allow your feelings to overpower your goals. I had this problem my entire life! I realized that I was living my life off of emotions and feelings. I woke up felt tired so I went back to sleep. I was hungry, I ate fast food cause it was quick n convenient ect..ect..since I started having control over my mind, I now have lost 130 pds, wake up at 5:30 am, exercise, meditate, set intention for the day, gratitude at night, eat healthier, quit smoking, quit drinking, gave up pills (I was addicted to opiates), left a toxic abusive relationship, so much accomplished just by changing my mindset.

Get your life together challenge : I love the idea! There are a number of these areas in which I'll happily follow along :)
Regarding sleep, I thought I'd give you something to be grateful for ;-) Have you considered that being able to sleep late could actually be a bonus?
I know it sounds like a great problem to have, but I *cannot* sleep after 6 AM. I trained myself to wake up early at some point in my 20s, and now, no matter how late I go to bed or fall asleep, I wake up at 6 regardless of anything else. And then I can't sleep again until the night. So if I'm lacking sleep, I just have to slug through the day, typically very unproductively and hope that I will sleep better the next night.
So right now my sleep challenge is to 1) be in bed at 10:30 no matter what - and 2) try to read something that doesn't excite me so I do fall asleep early enough.

Ahh I'm trying to fix my sleep schedule rn too!
I started going to bed early because of my anxiety disorder (I used to get bad panic attacks at night) and I started going to bed at 10 and waking up at 6 and it really helped and I felt great! But then summer came around and the sun came out at 4:30 so I decided to wake up at 5 and go to bed at 9 WHICH MADE ME FEEL EVEN GREATER. But then I went home to my family for a few weeks and lost my routine and I wasn't able to get back into it since. It's been 2-3 months. I feel bad waking up at 7-9 am everyday, both mentally and physically. I think it was so easy for me during spring/summer because the sun was out when I woke up but now it's dark until 8 so when my alarm wakes me at 5 I'm like "it's so dark and it will be dark for the next 3 hours" which sucks. But I'm trying again every day!
Good luck at everyone who tries to get their life together. Just keep going no matter how hard it is and you'll get there eventually!

I've watched a couple of your vids but this one had me subscribing - my sleep is exactly the same! Sleeping at 5am to 2pm, I also need 9 hours sleep + 2 in the morning to 'get my brain on'. It's a real pain! It affects everything, it's worse in summer because I hate the heat, and all this on top of my PTSD exhaustion. But I need and want to change; I love mornings! Some summers I just stay up all night to see the dawn and feel so alive and clean, then pass out at 2pm, wake up at 9pm feeling like I live in another dimension. 😩
There's a lot of interesting info out there on Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome and Abnormal Circadian Rhythms - I often feel like I have this, but I'm able to sleep 'normal' when on vacation so I dunno! But it might be useful for you as you could be fighting body mechanics. Sometimes these things are harder to fix than just 'getting up earlier' - it's really the same kind of thing as when people say 'just cheer up' to sufferers of depression. I keep working on mine, I hope it's easier for you than it is for me! ❤️

This is the most relatable video I have ever seen!!! I don't understand how most of my friends function on 5-6 hours a night. I need at least 8.
The thing that has helped me the most is being strict with my routine which means going to bed at the exact same time every night and waking up at the same time each morning. I've found that being flexible with the times just makes it so much harder the next day. If you can't stick to your times it will help so much!

It’s true! It starts with being strict about going to bed at a certain time. Still working on it ✨

literally my body clock is so similar and kinda worse (not flexing..? cx) being sleep deprived sucks and it is hard to work out of it and discipline yourself for a healthier body clock. this was encouraging!

I am a night owl 🦉 too and I've been tried so many ways to wake up early & at the same time trying to get 7-8 hours sleep. At some point I realised, why focus on getting up early? I should focus on getting sleep early. I thought 💭 if I can go to bed 🛏 early, then I might able to wake up early too. The important things is to feel refresh and enough of sleep. I try it for 1 month.. It's not easy at the beginning, but then here I am 😊 being able to wake up early & get things done! At the end of the day it's not about getting up at 5am or what. But being able to wake up at least before 9am (depends on individual target) is actually a huge success for me.. 🎊

I really believe having a good sleep schedule makes the whole day better as it makes me more productive and keeps my mood better, but i was struggling to be consistent with my schedule, you're a big help thank you Aileen

I truly believe there are two types of people. Those who are more productive in the morning like me and those who are more productive at night. It’s not a bad thing as long as you allow your body to get the rest it needs. 👍🏻😊
