With most duel compound tires, the base compound extends all the way to the sidewall and the softer compound is bonded on top of that. There is a wedge shaped area where the two overlap. They are not butted up at 90 degree angle. The overlap area will "ruffle" a bit on the edge as the tire wears normally. This is not an issue unless large sections begin to delaminate from the edge.
I had many Pirelli Rosso Corsa 2 and had never such problems. Are awesome tires with a very high grip level. Given to me much confidence. On the streets im going very hard on the throttle. Maybe it was one case... Do not blame Pirelli and italians making good work.. in cars and bikes.. 😉
You cannot blame Pirelli for this fault, I have seen this happen in other mainstream brands, most dual compound tires will suffer with delamination between the compounds, but they do so rarely. It can be caused by a number of different reasons, the age of the tire can be a major factor. Pirelli makes some of the best road/track tires out there, this one rare occurrence should not put people off the brand. But that is just my opinion. If you disagree, that's fine. Cheers.
Hi Toska, I respect your opinion as I allways do, but I fully disagree with you. To be honest I never have seen or heared about this phenomena on an other brand. But still I think that this should not have happend to a motorcycle tire, and IF it does.. the maker, in this case Pirelli should be dealing with a failure like this in a proper way. Specialy as if you can see at the pictures, that the tire is way before its end of live. Perhaps you like to pay for a new tire each time you (rear) tire is only uhhh 1/2 way gone..? Well we don't mate. Greets from the Old Mechanic, and ride save !
I own a Ducati Monster 1200 S which came with Diablo Rosso II in 2016. No problem with those then moved to the new Diablo Rosso III also very nice. And 2 years ago I switched to Diablo Rosso Corsa II which were really great and better in terms of performance BUT I had 2 rear punctures within 6 months! In the first puncture, the tyre was worn out ok, I can accept that and I noticed the puncture after having parked the motorcycle for a while. Second puncture I barely rode 2500-3000km in Alpine roads, the tyre was less than a week old not worn out. I could have easily done another 3000km but instead got a massive puncture that I noticed while cornering because the bike felt strange different. Thank god I stopped right away because at the next corner I would have crashed 100%. So on my end not a pretty good experience with Corsa 2 and I am not really tempted by the new Diablo Rosso IV Corsa... I tried the supercorsa which was fantastic but too expensive. Hence this season I am looking at Bridgestone or Metzler. Any suggestions? I do a lot of countryside roads in Germany, once a year a full week in the Alps and occasionally track days.
Alright, so thanks for sharing this video! I got this exact tire on my WR125X 4stroke Supermoto, I had the Rosso Corsa MK3 Last year, but I changed it to the Corsa 2 and I'm most CERTAINLY gonna have look over my tires before every ride! I put a few miles on em for break in, some mild braking, mild acceleration, then some stronger braking and acceleration and progressively more lean angle over the course of 3 hours on mixed weather conditions (rain + sun). I have to say they do feel awesome on the part where the slippery rubber has rubbed off, I'm gonna test them out more in the next few weeks, but I personally love Pirelli! I was like, oh come on, they're Italian, they make racing tires, but this video got me thinking! Im generally Concerned about the tires ability to hold up to rough conditions! Although it's just a 125cc 4 stroke, I still TORTURE my tires when the weather is awesome! Hot streets, a lot of full throttle, high lean angle, attempts of sliding into the curves etc.. definitely gonna look out from now on! But on my last set of Pirellis, Ive had zero problems, but time will tell how good the MK2s are gonna hold up! Great video!✌️
Thanks for the video. I heard the same thing happens in South Korea too. Some of my riding buddy experienced exactly the same issue with their rear tires. I think this is a common issue with DRC2 and Pirelli needs to provide better answer ASAP.
Don't let that scare you. I've had this "issue" on every set off corsa 2s and it never caused any problems. It is just a commonly known and only superficial delamination that happens with this tyre.
Had Rosso corsa 2 tyre's on my last bike great tyre's no issues, old aged tyre's do this even on car's. Will be buying more soon as my supercorsa wears out.
I would advise highlighting this defect on a few different motorcycle forums perhaps sending pics to larger motorcycle youtubers such as "fortnine" for starters and perhaps Revzilla...if this compound separation isn't a one off failure and happens to be occurring unnoticed on other tyres; highlighting this might just save lives even if Pirelli ignore what might be a manufacturing defect.
Had many sudden slides especially with the front tire (Temp between 10-15°C, driven a few kilometers) - got worried and switched (tirewear under 50%) to Rosso IV
Having the same problem after 2000KM. It worry me because it shows how uneven the tire surfaces are. I had mine slightly different which half torn and half smooth. It wasn’t the entire rim that’s torn. It’s torn unevenly on one side and the other. Date of manufacturing 2322
Hi, thanks for the video and to share that problem. I have a MV Agusta Dragster 800rr and a Panigale 1199s, both have Pirelli Rosso Corsa 2 and both have the same problem as you have. The tire on the MV has around 1500kms and on the Panigale around 2000kms and it’s not normal that they stay like this. This next week Im going to ask for a refund for both tires. I always used Pirelli and it’s the first time I see this.
Im sorry to see that, ive run 6x sets now and never had that issue what so ever, i understand what your saying, i run zx1400r Kawasaki and they do get punishment on all levels, track days windy roads, the split issue i haven't had any issues or wear problems. Must admitted seeing that one would lose confident. But i never had that issue, i spent 1 day on track and they preform very very well, at the sametime putting on slicks my time would cut in half. Rossi 2 are for street and day at the track. Next set you should run super coursa that has high race grip in the dry, that tire is what you need to run on those road.
Hi, that's an interesting video, I have a new Aprilia RS660 which came with Rosso Corsa II, so far they're holding up, great results on track and in heavy rain. BUT, my Maserati has Pirelli MGT tyres (Maserati Genuine Tyre) I fitted a new set in December 2020, replaced them in March 2021, three months later. They wore down to the limit in 3000 miles (5000KM) and I only commute to work in my car. My tyre supplier said that wasn't right and sent them back to Pirelli for analysis> It's 20th of August as I write this and I'm still waiting for an answer!!!!!!!!! No email, no letter, no phone call. Shame on Pirelli. I bought genuine tyres for my Maserati and these are the results. I had to buy a replacement set of MGT's and after 3000 miles they are at 5mm - similar to your son's story there was a problem. Same roads same commute. NOT HAPPY. Good luck in your pursuit.
Hi Mellie I am curious to the answer Pirelli is going to give you about your car tires. I am sure that you don't have a problem with a set of 'faulty' tires when the producer of the tires admit that there was something wrong with them and give you a new set or a nice discount on new tires.. Keep me/us informed about the outcome. Greets from The Old Mechanic
When was the tire manufactured? Might is have been too old, dried out? Otherwise Pirelli handled that poorly. I too would not be quick to put on another tire of the same brand and make.
Hi Robin, Very good thinking of you ! The tire showed no signs of beeing dried out. And it wasn't driven under inflated ( tire pressure to low) as then you see that blueish color on the side you know. I personaly was ready with the Pirelli brand.. but yeah it wasn't my bike nor choice.
Your son bought the bike 2nd hand, therefore it's almoat impossible to know how the previous rider treated or, if he slammed it against a curb or something like this... but anything is possible I suppose. They should have earned a customer, and given you a free rear tire - I'm sure that would have made you a customer for life.
Your not the first nor the last perelli has had issues in the past with their tri compound tires in their road lineup its when they run their "long milage wet" compound with corsa soft on the edges as for pereilli customer service thats pretty typical from big name Italian moto companies agv dainese and sidi and so on hoping they get it figgured out love their compounds but that's a life ender right their

A customers problem is an opportunity for suppliers and manufacturers. Unfortunately Pirelli missed a great opportunity here.

Hi David, we have sended the tire to the ' Pirelli Laboratories' so sorry I don't have the dot code..
I would guess the tyre was used on a track day over heated and caused a tear, and it got worse over time.
