- Hume’s most important contributions to the philosophy of causation are found in ‘A Treatise of Human Nature and An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding’.
Hume points out that our knowledge of causal connections is not derived from reason or logical necessity. Instead, our belief in causation is a product of habit or custom, formed by our repeated observations of the conjoining of events. Hume argues that our belief in causation is not the result of direct sensory impressions but arises from the association of ideas.
