- In the mid 70's it was planned to revive Star Trek on TV and some pre production art work was produced by illustrator Ralph McQuarrie for the pilot movie "Planet of the Titians" . This was shelved in favour of "Star Trek-Phase 2" which in turn eventually evolved into "Star Trek the Motion Picture". This trailer depicts a Star Trek that never was, based on McQuarries designs, but his radical Enterprise redesign has since formed the basis for USS Discovery in the 2017 TV series

That starship looks like what they are using in star trek discovery....
It is ,
Yep, they used Roddenberry original material for DISCO.
It's a shame this story was never realised, would have been a fascinating movie. Shatner himself bemoans the fact it was never made in his Movie Memories book.... the other planned story was excellent too, where they go back in time and inadvertently start world war II.
R McQuarrie did amazing work on Star Wars, it's true. It makes sense after seeing SW, Paramount execs and GR would be eager to tap into some of that creative magic for Star Trek. BUT... that version of the Enterprise has to be the most hideous spaceship I have EVER seen! It's the Millenium Falcon at the top of a flagpole on a liferaft! And apart from the fact that the illustrations make it look like it's made of WOOD! (Introducing the USS Kontiki!) the silhouette of this thing as it flies right at you looks like something out of "Short Circuit", like the Federation sent a flagship that looked like "We surrender!" in all know forms of communication (Hands UP!)
Yes, it was a too radical redesign though it actually did turn up in ST-TNG, the prototype models were used as part of the fleet blasted by the Borg
I give A for effort. :)
Hey Russell im from the future that ship, that class consists of the uss discovery and glenn its not good im breaking the temporal prime directive to tell u this bc this abomination of a ship is altering the timeline and causing ripple effects.
Awesome
Ralph McQuarries art had nothing to do with Phase II. It was for the movie "Planet of the Titans" Phase 2 had a closer-to-TOS Enterprise design, that later evolved into the TMP Enterprise. They were seperate projects.
Thanks for correcting that, when I put this up I was under the impression that POTT was going to be a pilot telemovie but as you say it was a separate feature project. There was so much to and froing and dithering leading up to STTMP it's hard to keep track of everything.
They should make star trek planet of the titans into a animated film for paramount plus.
And it's PREVIEW not a trailer!
@@confusedbutok Umm what does a trailer do? Lead or follow?
Thanks!
Pure corn. But I'd have watched the movie regardless.
Enterprise design is ugly as hell... no way...
better than discovery

That's not saying much.... JJ and these current cast of pay per view reject writers and producers should be shot for the fiasco they made ST into. Just horrid.
@@GORF_EMPIRE It's not JJ, it's Kurtzman.
@@EvanG529 JJ did the last three movies no?
@@GORF_EMPIRE the movies were not near as bad as the shows coming out. A bit of lazy writing but nothing offensive to the sensibilities. I actually quite liked Beyond.
