  • The studs shear as I'm exiting T1 at Sebring during PBOC's 6 hour night enduro. You can see the wheel bouncing next to me as I pilot the car into the grass. Tow truck pulled me in, and DriverGear Racing put on a new hub, studs, and wheel, and we were back on track. The rotor put a hole through the barrel of the wheel when it came off. No other damage to the car. We finished P3 at the end of the night.

Sweet baby jeebus I’d need a change of pants after that! I’ve never had a wheel come off when I was driving and I never want to try it!

Ok.... First of all, I'm so glad that you were able to safely to get off the track. Seriously, this video is epic with the wheel flying by in the background. This video gets a total thumbs up from me. Safe and happy driving!

Thanks Jess! Pretty interesting moment when the car was suddenly lower on the front left haha. The wheel in the background is hilarious.

First no brakes now this 😳 sheer excitement! Any ideas why they sheered off? I’ve read on forums that you should replace them periodically but wasn’t sure if that was true or not.

SUXGAS replacing them once a season is a great idea and a schedule I follow on my car. It reduces the likelihood of something like this happening. Unfortunately sometimes it still happens. And in all forms of racing, even F1!

      How old were they?
Yes, yearly is the recommended interval for “regular track day” participants included in the instructions mine came with. The more heat your brakes throw into them seems to have an influence as the heat cycles make them more brittle.

Unsure as it wasn't my car. I'll find out from the owner and report back. On my own M3, I replace every off season. Preventative maintenance helps keep my mind from wondering when the green flag drops.

Shear, not sheer. Sheer is "see through" shear is a metal failure. Great idea to change them every racing season. Even better to replace them with stronger studs from ARP. Almost unbreakable... almost!

Good call. Edited! ;) This wasn't my car, so I don't know what the replacement interval was, or how many hours these had on them. On my own racecar, I replace them every season. They go through alot of wheel changes every race weekend.
