Great views! I'm editing my audiobook … not a task for wimps, let me tell you. Totally agree about Amazon. A year ago, I was touting them as being the Indie Publisher's best friend. Now, I'm watching them out of the corner of my eye with suspicion.
I found Findaway Voices out of pure frustration with Amazon. I did my narration, submitted the work, then for the last 6 months I've been going back and forth editing with them. I was sooooo upset because to hire a narrator costs thousands! I was just about to say F it and start all over with my narration. Then I googled other ways to publish audiobooks without Amazon and boom found Findaway. Within only a couple of days they were done and it's ready to go. Now just waiting for the distribution to happen. I have written 4 books, and working on my 5th. I just want to get my work out there. Thanks for the video. New subscriber. :)

Hi Crystal, so, are you saying that every time you submitted your work, they found something wrong? Because I just got rejected by Amazon because my cover did not have my title and author name. I just fixed it, but now I'm wondering if they will find other "issues". The back-and-forth stuff is what I'm not planning on doing.
@@RandaWise Yes that's what happened to me but hopefully that won't be an issue for you and possibly since the last 2 years they have upgraded and worked out any kinks. But now my audiobook is on Audible. So issues there. I did the recording myself but I HIGHLY recommend having someone else voice for you unless of course its a autobiography or memoir. Good Luck!!
@@CrystalHickerson Thanks for the tips, Crystal. My audiobook has many character dialogue and I use a plug in for Garageband that can do different voices. It's a highly dramatic novel full of sound fx. I've had a focus group sample listen, and nobody realized I was all those characters. 😀 No way am I putting all my eggs in the ACX basket.

That's a great question :). For professional narrators, probably the most important thing is to read the book completely, so that we know every word, name, pronunciation and character. When we read, we don't want to stop the flow to figure out what's up with some new character, or how to pronounce the name of a river--we want to concentrate on telling the story.

For what it's worth, I chose to go wide on Findaway with all 6 of my audiobooks (that had previously been on ACX) and my total sales went up, even though my royalty percentage went down. So best of both worlds to go wide, imo

I am both the author and narrator... in addition to that I've included original music. Not sure how that will work. I have to find a platform due to specific guidelines for a contest. I wish there were more competitors with better percentage rates.
Happy to help! I started my latest book on ACX and then put it on Findaway afterwards ... so far we have not seen many sales outside of audible despite attempts to promote it ... so it may be our standing recommendation that you stick with ACX.

I have been thinking about the different ways to produce books whether it be like a formatted design or audio, and I have really good audio program called Ableton available to me I was hoping you could make a RUclips video explaining the different ways to produce your own audio and how to get it in the right format for uploading. Are the production specs the same on ACX and Findaway so that I can produce it on either platform and use the same files on both? Can I get an ISBN # on either site to use on both? What is the best Bitrate (25-30?) to use and way to download a large (8 hr) file to customers who buy the book on my wordpress website? Is Findawayvoices owned by Findaway? If you meet the ACX specs you'll be fine on Findaway. Use the same ISBN for both. Findaway Voices is now owned by Spotify. The bitrate question is out of my expertise.
Does Findaway have submission requirements. I tried to get my book on ACX, but they're so finnicky about requirements. I don't have time to be dealing with a company that's so tough on how we authors deliver our voices. Not fair. They remind me of Literary Agents back in the day.
Excellent info.You are right, we need to consider that by going exclusive we are feeding the monster, not to mention that so much is changing that who knows what the market will look like in seven years. It was not that long ago that Sears and JcPenny seemed to big to fail. For years they were the go to place for many communities, and now they are fighting for their lives. With new companies coming onto the scene, who knows what things will look like seven months from now, never mind seven years.

If I have a two hour audiobook that involves big-name celebrities and I decide to sell it through find away voices at 15.99, if I allow them to distribute through Audible, will the price automatically be changed by audible because it is under a three hour recording? Hi, I published half of my ACX books to Findaway on July, just manage to earn $40 from 30 units sold. Most of the sales coming from Bibliotheca and Scribd. Concerned about putting other half on findaway. Anyway non of the titles are not listed in Hoopla.

I'm excited to find this just at the moment I'm hovering my cursor between Exclusive and Non-Exclusive on the ACX site! Question, when you say upload the files to ACX and do the rest, for example, through Findaway Voices as you recommendation (which of course I believe I will take!) - what exactly is "the rest"? I'm assuming you mean do the nonexclusive agreement and upload onto the ACX site and then additionally upload onto Findaway Voices? This is my first audio book, self-narrated and completely rights-owned worldwide by myself, the audio version of my "hard" book "The Spiritual Slob" available on Amazon. It's pretty fakkin' rockin' and I have verbal agreements to split proceeds with my friends who recorded/mixed, and composed/soundscaped it. I want it to be global so it was important to hear what you had to say about chucking it all into one ring. Is adding it therefore to BOTH the Findaway Voices AND Authors Republic sites redundant? Is there any other advice you might give? Thank you!
Hi Gregg - good question. What I mean is publish to ACX for audible (non-exclusive) to maximize your income there and then use Findaway Voices to publish to Overdrive, Hoopla, Apple, and beyond in order to get the maximum distribution. Hope that helps?

What is the advantage (if any) of having the book upload to ACX on top of FindAway voices? Or should we go only with FIndAway if we want wider distribution?
You make more money with the books sold via Audible uploading to ACX + Findaway. Findaway takes a cut on top of the cut that ACX takes. You already make so little money on an audiobook that I think it's better to maximize. But, for simplicity, you can just use Findaway.

I uploaded my first audiobook in Findaway thanks to you and your video, but ,i am not sure about apple distribution. With the same audiobook i am non-exclusive inACX, and went on Findaway too, but i would like to use apple 45 % royalty (findaway) instead of apple 25%(Acx), i can select and deselect what i want in Findaway , but not in ACX... ...how do you stop distributing apple in ACX ?
There *should* be a way to unselect it. I know it's the default but I am pretty sure it can be done. I'll have to check with our Client Care Manager for the exact process. Contact Findaway Voices and ask them!
I don't know how I missed your channel before. I find ACX difficult to deal with. I heard some horror stories about Findaway though that kept me from them. It's interesting to hear your take even if I'm not a nonfiction author. Thank you.

Woot I'm becoming a consistent early responder! You talk about audiobooks a lot. There are a lot of steps to self publishing. But I'm confused about priorities and best chronological order. Do you have checklists for after the book is written or mostly written? A visual list would help me
Hmmm we have a timeline we give to our clients but it's a BEAST! I'll see about simplifying it for general consumption. Essentially we have our clients start their audiobooks when the book is done proofread or after the second copy edit. It's best to do it before the book is 'locked down' in design because when you read it out loud you will find things you want to change or catch small errors that somehow snuck through.

Tough for me to talk about something that doesn't apply to me, but Dale Roberts Self Publishing channel talks more about doing things on a tight budget so that might be helpful for you.

I'm going to do the same thing. It seems ACX makes it hard to get through to get published anyway because they're so nit-picky. I was about to revise my cover for the "issues" they stated in my rejection email. But I'm just going to head over to Findaway and forget about Amazon. My kindle book is already on Amazon. I'm gonna see if I can change it to non-exclusive.
Soon, I will be using Findaway voices to create my audiobook. One question tho! Does it have a royalty share? It should cost me around 1500$ but since I don't have that much money as a student, the only way for me to get an audiobook done is royalty share.

So even if you are NOT exclusive to ACX they still determine your list price?
Yes they do for Audible. You can't set the price for Audible.

Audible controls your price - the length is part of how they determine the price not the names of celebrities.

Can I use the same files of my audiobooks narrated by my narrator from ACX and go on Author's Republic for example?
I paid my narrators pfh and the contract with acx is not exclusive. My question is: in order to publish my audiobook in another platform I need to get them narrated again from a different narrator?
You'll have to review your contract with ACX. I would think, if you went non-exclusive you are ok, but review your contract.

I'm excited to find this just at the moment I'm hovering my cursor between Exclusive and Non-Exclusive on the ACX site! Question, when you say upload the files to ACX and do the rest, for example, through Findaway Voices as you recommendation (which of course I believe I will take!) - what exactly is "the rest"? I'm assuming you mean do the nonexclusive agreement and upload onto the ACX site and then additionally upload onto Findaway Voices? This is my first audio book, self-narrated and completely rights-owned worldwide by myself, the audio version of my "hard" book "The Spiritual Slob" available on Amazon. It's pretty fakkin' rockin' and I have verbal agreements to split proceeds with my friends who recorded/mixed, and composed/soundscaped it. I want it to be global so it was important to hear what you had to say about chucking it all into one ring. Is adding it therefore to BOTH the Findaway Voices AND Authors Republic sites redundant? Is there any other advice you might give? Thank you!
Hi Gregg - good question. What I mean is publish to ACX for audible (non-exclusive) to maximize your income there and then use Findaway Voices to publish to Overdrive, Hoopla, Apple, and beyond in order to get the maximum distribution. Hope that helps?

What is the advantage (if any) of having the book upload to ACX on top of FindAway voices? Or should we go only with FIndAway if we want wider distribution?
You make more money with the books sold via Audible uploading to ACX + Findaway. Findaway takes a cut on top of the cut that ACX takes. You already make so little money on an audiobook that I think it's better to maximize. But, for simplicity, you can just use Findaway.

I uploaded my first audiobook in Findaway thanks to you and your video, but ,i am not sure about apple distribution. With the same audiobook i am non-exclusive inACX, and went on Findaway too, but i would like to use apple 45 % royalty (findaway) instead of apple 25%(Acx), i can select and deselect what i want in Findaway , but not in ACX... ...how do you stop distributing apple in ACX ?
There *should* be a way to unselect it. I know it's the default but I am pretty sure it can be done. I'll have to check with our Client Care Manager for the exact process. Contact Findaway Voices and ask them!

I don't know how I missed your channel before. I find ACX difficult to deal with. I heard some horror stories about Findaway though that kept me from them. It's interesting to hear your take even if I'm not a nonfiction author. Thank you.

The exclusive agreement is just for the audio version.
Who does Findaway Voices distribute to? If you don't want to go exclusive, what are some other distributors to use to reach as wide of an audience as you can?

Woot I'm becoming a consistent early responder! You talk about audiobooks a lot. There are a lot of steps to self publishing. But I'm confused about priorities and best chronological order. Do you have checklists for after the book is written or mostly written? A visual list would help me
Hmmm we have a timeline we give to our clients but it's a BEAST!
I'll see about simplifying it for general consumption. Essentially we have our clients start their audiobooks when the book is done proofread or after the second copy edit. It's best to do it before the book is 'locked down' in design because when you read it out loud you will find things you want to change or catch small errors that somehow snuck through.

Tough for me to talk about something that doesn't apply to me, but Dale Roberts Self Publishing channel talks more about doing things on a tight budget so that might be helpful for you.

I'm going to do the same thing. It seems ACX makes it hard to get through to get published anyway because they're so nit-picky. I was about to revise my cover for the "issues" they stated in my rejection email. But I'm just going to head over to Findaway and forget about Amazon. My kindle book is already on Amazon. I'm gonna see if I can change it to non-exclusive.
Soon, I will be using Findaway voices to create my audiobook. One question tho! Does it have a royalty share? It should cost me around 1500$ but since I don't have that much money as a student, the only way for me to get an audiobook done is royalty share.
They do have a narrator split option - you can investigate that.
