Why Every Author Needs a Goodreads Account

- Goodreads is where the most avid readers hang out, socialize and find their next book to read. As an author, you need to make sure your book is on Goodreads and if your target reader is likely to be a Goodreads user then you need to do more than just have an account.
In this video Julie Broad of Book Launchers explains why every author needs a Goodreads account, and what are the most important things to do to take advantage of that account.

@@BookLaunchers I'm still trying to navigate this sea of indie publishing. Everyone wants something with no promises and no results. Paid $100 for ARC reviews on Booksprout almost 2 weeks ago and no reviewer picked up the books. Onlinebookclub wants pay for reviews. I'm going to, when I have time, make a list of places, other than Wattpad that does reviews for free.

I am on Goodreads, however, I don't tend to get over there as much as I would like. I am working on getting my author account there, but as an Author & Publisher, it is often not my priority to promote my own work. This was a very informative video, so thank you for that! I'm going to make an effort to get on Goodreads more regularly now. An idea for a video might be to do one on how Publishers can use Goodreads more effectively to promote their authors and catalogs. I would love to see this! Thanks for all you do. You're such a blessing!
Gosh ... yes, I do have a Goodreads account and quite honestly I've done very little with it - in fact, it's just languished in the portals of my browser - guess I should go and find where I bookmarked it and at least get to use the quote section (which I'd never heard of so ta very much :)

@@BookLaunchers That's news to me. It'll be interesting how many fans show up. Nobody I know follows hockey. The only time I've seen a game was when we did a soccer exchange when I was in 6th grade. We stayed the night and played soccer the next day. My host family in Surrey took me to a game. I don't know where the game was though. I know we took the tunnel under the river. That was cool.

Getting something edited or changed on goodreads requires an act of Congress. If someone can direct me to someone who knows how to fix my existing author page there, that’d be great. I was told you have to be lucky enough to know a goodreads ‘librarian’ to make any changes. I’m lost.

I don't have a goodreads account but realized my book is listed on the site. I suspect this was done by Amazon ...is that correct? The book profile is not complete (no description, etc) and it is getting some low star reviews. I suspect it has just attracted some random readers - not my ideal readers. Feel like now I need to set-up an author account and claim my book...grrr!
Absolutely claim your book and try to get some folks who are your ideal readers to post reviews. Amazon owns Goodreads so yea .... they set it up automatically. Good luck!

I've been on Goodreads for over a year, but I don't think I linked my books (I'll add it to my to-do list). I signed up to it for beta reading :)

Well I use to use it quite a bit when you could do giveaways for free. I use it less now, but I still love to answer questions that readers leave, etc.

That would be my husband. The RUclips videos are a family affair ... especially since the pandemic. The kid is my son and the guy is my husband. He's usually behind the camera as well.
I knew Amazon didn't want family members to review your book, but it's kinda crazy they have a problem with Facebook friends too. Most of my friends on FB I don't even know in person and many I found through friends, or friends of friends, so the connection is tenuous.

I just read on Goodreads that you can only add quotes from "notable people." Guess that leaves quotes from my book out.
Yes. When I add content to Goodreads, I sell more Kindle Unlimited words - not so many physical books though.
Hmm I'm not sure I understand what you are saying? When you add your books to your profile you don't see the physical books?

It really depends as there is a lot you can do with it. You can start by putting what you're reading on there, connecting your books to your page, and following some of your favorite authors.

Yes, I am on goodreads. I do non-fiction memoirs. I was up there today in fact, trying to add my second book. I think I got it, but the first book shows up twice, so now I have to figure out how to merge them. Thanks for the heads up on non-fiction and the giveaway. I didn't quite understand what you are saying about quotes from the text. Where do I put that? Social media or in the Q and A on Goodreads?

I've found it to be especially challenging to find data about the habits of poetry readers. And also difficult to find reader platforms that even include poetry as a genre!
It appears that goodreads do not have a poetry genre (or subgenre)🙃

How do you become a quoted author on good reads? I've clamed my book, but don't know how to become a quoted author.
I'm pretty sure other readers have to add your quotes but I'm not sure if ANY Goodreads user can do it. I think they can.

Nope.
What about if I signed up my kdp account with the same address of my Facebook .i didn't know that time I have to sign up with different address so will this affect on my author page on good reads even if I sign up in good reads with a different email
It's all good - it's not ideal but you're in the same situation as so many authors!!

After 40 years in journalism and PR, I'm now writing about life's important stuff: horny toads, skinned knees, Sooner football, running wild with your best friend, and using gallons of Monkey's blood. So, obviously, my memoirs are "Memories of an Okie Boomer; Growing up in Norman in the 60s and 70s" and "MORE Memories of an Okie Boomer..." Yep, I am on Good Reads, even though it's mainly for women aged 35 or under. About 75% of my readers are Okie Boomer women 65+ who love to laugh (but not on airplanes; squirting is embarrassing"). My books are on Amazon, thanks to my pro musician soon, who speaks Digital and can do all that magic. I'm trying to boost my Good Reads profile myownself. Yeah, right... Like going to the dentist. But your video helped a bit. Next: trying to add a free chapter link, a mugshot, a book giveaway and FREE LIFE SIZE BLOW UP horny toad, okay, maybe not, will take awhile longer.

Goodreads is more like a social media platform not a place where you sell your book directly.

A couple of things, on Goodreads do you set it up before your book is published, Also is it for all authors or just non-fiction authors. And last thank you for the help you gave me to find a publisher for my fiction book, you did not have to do that but really thank you.
Hi - you can't link your books until you've published but you can set up an account at any time. I think Goodreads is better for fiction than most non-fiction. Glad the info helped a bit! There are some great fiction authors that hang out around here so if you have questions you can always ask them - Mandi Lynn, Keith Wheeler Books, Kevin Maguire and others!

Yes, I am on Good Reads; {sigh} I signed up for a Mercedes, and I'm riding it like a bicycle. I have NO idea how to run a giveaway or add my book to lists or even what lists exist publicly. I don't have a good headshot, nor do I have the money for a decent photographer. Believe it or not, I use my passport photo. You are lovely dear, but you are speaking a foreign language and I am only more confused than I was when I started.

At 2:36 you say you have to use the same email used for your Amazon account to set up Goodreads in order to list your books. Are you talking about books you've READ or books you've WRITTEN? This isn't clear. Kindlepreneur says NOT to use an email connected to Amazon Shopping or KDP accounts. ruclips.net/video/uyTRd6qiMW0/видео.html
Can you please clarify whether using your Amazon email will put an author's book reviews in jeopardy if Amazon deems them to be "from friends or family", (even if they aren't)?
You should set you your Amazon account with a different email address than what you use for social media so it's more difficult for Amazon to connect you to the folks you are connected to socially.

Is that necessary to connect books an author has written to their Goodreads account? I'm confused because Kindlepreneur advised against using the same email for Goodreads and Amazon. I can't see why that would be a problem, though I do understand the reason for not linking Goodreads to Facebook--which I won't do. Thanks! :D
So I am pretty sure - in order to connect your books to Goodreads - you have to use the same address that you use for your Amazon account. What we recommend is that you create a NEW email address for your Author Account from day 1 and use THAT for Amazon so you can have a clean email address for all of this.

Really want to write a book and everybody tells me that I need to write my story however, I would love to be able to hear what you’re saying and learn from you, but you talk Waze too fast for me to pick up on everything that you’re saying please slow down and just a little bit and that would be helpful. Thank you otherwise I love your enthusiasm in your happy spirit so much but I just can’t keep up with you. I’m 83 years of age so might might be why
RUclips allows you to choose the speed of the replay - you could set it to .75 and slow me down! :)
