    Did you do the proper chassis reinforcements to do this conversion? The stock chassis was not designed for coil overs, and needs to be strengthened in areas to accommodate the new loading points. You’re eventually going to get structural cracks, weather you race it or not.

    I had a 911Sc, bought from a guy who owned a body shop and it was his personal car. Had black Emron paint, 10 coats, color sanded 3 times, it was flawless. He had it lowered, cut the Koni towers, and yes, going over bumps at speed, front tires would rub inner fenders and remove rubber. :(( On the plus side, girls would follow me home, and I made a few friends that way. Sadly, got married and sold it to pay for a down payment on a home. Not a bad investment, bought home @$139k--it's worth now $540k----but I had to give up my dream car, so there's that. 24 year timeline.

  • @RobertKohut
    @RobertKohut 7 лет назад +1

    Hmmm, that really changes the suspension characteristics!! (rear suspension) Originally the load from the wheel is transferred forward in the chassis as well as towards the center line of the vehicle (torsion bar length). Now the load from the wheel is directly transferred to the shock tower (mounting point) making the load shift rearward (from stock) about 1' and adding significant load to the shock mount. Is this really all okay?

    • @speedacademy
      @speedacademy  7 лет назад +1

      Yes it is. This has been done a lot of times already. If you're getting into serious racing people reinforce the top mounts but for street use its fine as is.

    What size tires and rims are you running? The fronts do look a bit too wide... or perhaps the aftermarket rims you are using has a offset that pushes the rim too far out of the wheel well? Any thoughts of replacing rear rubber bushing with graphite/plastic ones? What was the total cost of the coilovers? A few years back they were crazy money. Didn't you need to do a front wheel alignment ?

  • @EchoOfGecko

    • @speedacademy
      @speedacademy  7 лет назад +1

      If you leave them it would defeat the purpose of going to an adjustable coilover. Remember they act like springs. If you dont care about ride height and want better dampening KW actually offers adjustable shocks without coils.

    • @speedacademy

      @@speedacademy Really appreciate the input on this. I keep getting mixed opinions on this. I would prefer these to the VON ones at elephant, but I don't really want to pull my motor to weld in reinforcements until I am ready to do my turbo and stuff, but that will be a while. Glad I found the channel this helps with a lot on my build. I will definitely mention your channel in some of my videos.

    Do you not need a torsion bar with the KW setup? Just curious but do you know what the difference is between porsche and KW's suspensions are?

    • @sanchoMDB
      @sanchoMDB 7 лет назад +1

      Chris Soto the torsion bar acts as a spring which determines ride height. The coils have springs built into the strut and renders the torsion bar unnecessary. It would prevent any height adjustment if it wasn't removed.

      Ceazar Carr the setup is only moving the location of the "spring" from the factory torsion bar to a traditional coil setup, so the force on the shock mount doesn't really increase. Springs suspend/return the shock to full extension... the shock itself takes the majority of the force as it is designed to

    Maybe I don't get your channel. I am new to it, so that is likely. But, building a 930 motor and not driving it on the track is just a waste. And, you put coil over on but didn't do a corner balance and alignment? A 500hp custom motor, no expense spared, coupled with low cost suspension put on shoddily just makes now sense to me. I liked the engine build series so much I'm still watching these videos for now. I hope to figure out why you built a 930 part way (engine super awesome, rest of it bargain basement) and then not drive it.

    • @speedacademy
      @speedacademy  6 лет назад

      Why does every car have to go to the track? Do you know how many Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, etc. owners go to the track? Probably 10% of them, does that mean they aren't enjoying their cars?
      Not everyone is into track driving so building a reliable fun and fast car for street use makes a lot of sense to me especially when it is an old air cooled 911. I have plenty of cars to take to the track, I dont need to build my 911 to be used for that. I want it to be comfortable and fun for the street.
      Lastly, I think you should do some research on low cost suspension because KW is certainly not in that category.

    • @BrianStDenis-pj1tq
      @BrianStDenis-pj1tq 6 лет назад

      I do not know how many P-car owners take their cars to the track. Good question.
      But, a 930 is already crazy fast in a straight line and yours is way beyond stock. The amount of use you'd get from the upgrades can be full realized on the track. No way you can use the big power on the road.
      Yeah, I get that some people have "well equipped" cars and don't take them to the track. But, take a GT3, I bet most of those owners do take them to the track. Just seems like your car would be so awesome on the track and so "too much" for the street.
      Also, your channel is "speed academy" not "we built a hot rod and then cruise with it academy". Again, I'm new to your channel, maybe I'll get the bigger picture in the future.
      Great set of videos, btw. Like another poster said, one of the best "how to" series I have seen. Many thumbs up.

      I appreciate your opinions and response. As I said, for me the car is a street car, not a track car. It would take a lot of work to convert it into a car that I could drive hard on the track and there is no need for that. I already have many much better options for the track. And I dont agree that the 930 is a great track car. There are very few people that use them for track use, most are cruisers. Track 911s are NA and like you said GT3s

    Roll the fenders. You don't need to change the wheels, you just need to get the fenders rolled. Simple process.

    I wouldn't go any lower than that tho. It looks cool like that and I really like the tire wheel combo you have there. There is some meat on the tire which I really like, especially on 911s. I think it started rubbing in the front cause shocks drop a little after you drive it a bit. So now you should be able to rise it up for a cm or two and it will be perfect.
    Really nice looking 911 bud. I like it. :)

    why didn't you just remove the whole torsion bar with the arms like u did at the end and just bash it out the same way? it would have saved cutting it.

    • @emc3065
      @emc3065 7 лет назад

      It's a different design in the front and back. It's easier to remove in the front by the look of things and didn't need to be cut.

      in the rear doesn't clear the fender/quarter panel??

    • @speedacademy

      It's too long and needs to be removed through the rear quarter fender hole thats covered up with the stone guard so that's why I cut them.

    Slamming an old 911 is always a really bad idea. The front A-Arms will constantly smash into the chassis rails, crushing that area, and damaging the chassis. Generally, if you've gonna run more than 30mm lower than normal ride height, your car is gonna be shit.
    I think that in six months, or less, you will lift it back up to a proper ride height. Because looking cool sucks when your ass is getting destroyed, and your chassis rails are being smashed every few hundred yards.
    You got the wrong wheels/tyres on the front, no doubt. Nothing worse than a 911 that rubs, or cuts at the front ! For my slammed supercharged 911 road-legal race car, I actually took the 19" Ace Spyder wheels and Eagle F1 road tyres off it, because the fronts rubbed so much, and I installed a set of 17" Cup One alloys, with proper sizes, to stop the rubbing/cutting.
    Despite losing some rubber on the ground, I gained a shit-ton of traction, because I fitted the Toyo Proxes R888 road-legal Targa tyre. The car also got a helluva lot better ride *and* handling as a result of the increased tyre height. You need that when your suspension only has 25-30mm of travel!
