  • Longtime Sox fans talk about the famous Dick Allen Chili Dog MVP game. Allen was eating a chili dog in the clubhouse when the call came for him to pinch-hitter in the bottom of the ninth, with the White Sox trailing, 4-2. As his manager predicted, he came through with a three-run homer off reliever Sparky Lyle to win the game, 5-4. 52,000 fans were at the game that day, but many left and missed the legendary homer, as explained by Peter Wilt and John Brudnak.

I was at this game too with my father and brother and a neighbor kid down the street. We got weekend season tix and went to most of the Sunday games my father wanted to see Dick Allen in person as much as he could. I was still kind of pissed they traded Tommy John away to get him but I saw some of those HR's he hit that year and said yep that is my guy. He came out of the dugout and my father is nudging me saying here he comes boys oh if he can just get a hold of one and OMG he did it. My father picked me up tossed me in the air and screamed THIS IS WHY WE TRADED TOMMY JOHN AWAY I never saw my father get so excited after a game plus it was the Yankees too he hated with a passion what a great memory that was thanks for posting

Dick Allen was rookie of the year the year I was born. Also the year they choked. Doesn't matter, he deserves a bust in Cooperstown.

The only time I remember Dick Allen not wearing long sleeves while with the White Sox was that pinch hit homer. And he shook his fist while rounding the bases (rare back then).

Never never leave a game early. Even if your team loses, you stay there and just sit somber like it's a funeral.

Take Frank Robinson and add 10 feet. NL pitcher to Jim Palmer when Palmer asked him to describe Dick prior to his coming over to the AL. Still to this day the most exciting baseball player I ever saw play. Bo Jackson and Mike Trout are close (Saw Willie and Hank in their late 30s) but I still give Dick the moniker.
Even the vendors stopped in their tracks when Dick Allen came to the plate.

I was nine years old when Dick (they called him Richie then) was a rookie in 1964 in Philadelphia. My dad would take me to games at old Connie Mack Stadium, and when Allen came up, sometimes my dad would say, "He's due," and Allen would often hit one of his mammoth homers. Now I have a second story related to beating the Yankees on a bat day. I was living in Seattle in 1981, and on Saturday, May 9, 1981, the Yankees played the Mariners in the Kingdome on Bat Day. I went to that game. Tom Paciorek hit a walkoff 3 run homer to beat the Yankees that day. There were 51,000 fans in the Kingdome, and they were banging the bats on the metal seats after the game winning homer. Amazingly, Paciorek also hit a walkoff homer the day before to beat the Yankees. After the 1981 season, Paciorek was traded to the White Sox. I'm not writing this completely from my memory. I went to Baseball Reference and confirmed the information about what happened in the Kingdome in May of 1981.

One year Dick Allen skipped spring training because he said he didn't need it and still led the league in homers.

When with the Dodgers, Dick Allen was up in the Dodger Stadium Club during batting practice prior to an afternoon game, enjoying a cig 🚬 and a cocktail 🍸

Your correct - Dick allen did those type of things = But it cost him a HOF Election. Because Sportswriters didn't want that Activity that Dick would do in the HOF . Missed by 1 Lousy Sportswriters Vote . BTW those Writers were
Lousy humans - they couldn't play the game - so they get pissed at the stars

my favorite white sox teams, wilbur wood, dick allen, bill melton, tommy john, joel horlen, carlos may... i'll never forget the first game i saw with dick allen, we were early and i went down to the front row seats to watch the white sox warmup, and up the dugout steps comes dick allen, in uniform, wearing his red batting helmet, those awesome red pinstripes... he stops at the top step, surveys the field... and he's smoking a cigarette, it was at this moment i knew dick allen did pretty much what he wanted.

51 years later to the dat..Jake Burger won a game with a grand slam to beat the Tigers. Coincidence? I think not!!!!
Too bad there wasn't audio of Harry Caray from that day in '72 yelling "HOLY COW!!!!" from the Sox radio booth. Instead, we got "Holy Cow" alright...from Yankee announcer Phil Ruzzuto. I have that game on my phone from the Yankees network.
In the 7th Inning, Ruzzuto and Frank Messer (Yanks announcers) joked about "They should have more lights for the scores on that center field scoreboard instead of all those bells and whistles on that thing".
Well, couple of innings later...Dick Allen made that scoreboard work and "The Scooter" wasn't joking as much as he was eariler. Lol
