They were improving in 71. John Allyn hired Roland Hemond , Chuck Tanner, and Harry Carey. The young talent was improving , Melton , Hermann, May, Williams, Wood, Forster and Gossage soon
He didn't save the White Sox. JOHN ALLYN DID. IN FACT DICK ALLEN AFTER HE SIGNED A 4 YR CONTRACT QUIT IN EARLY SEPT OF YR 3 AND RETIRED. THAT WAS BUSH. he tried to come back 2 years later in Philadelphia, but was done
Beautiful memories of this charismatic slugger, great ballplayer, and baaad man. Wish he had gotten his due. Can you imagine if this man had been honored and appreciated from early in his career… Can you imagine if he had played 15, 16, 17 seasons in one city?!! There would be monuments built to him. And there should be.
I always said Dick Allen was my favorite White Sox player as a kid that '72 season was a memory I never will forget. RIP my friend you were one of the greatest and maybe the HOF will think so too if the voters get their heads out of thier asses
Amen!!!! Dick Allen brought an electricity of excitement when he stepped up to the plate like few players. Was Willie Mays level, Reggie Jackson level. He was like a heavyweight champ. You couldn’t take your eyes off him.
@@PabluchoViision If I were managing a team and my opponent had the bases loaded, 8th or 9th inning two outs, Dick Allen at the plate, and my team leading by two or three runs, I'd have my pitcher walk Mr. Allen and take my chances with the next batter.
NO FRANK THOMAS WAS. HEY I WAS THERE IN 74 AND ALLEN WAS BECOMING LAZY. HE FELT THE TEAM WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH AND RETIRED / QUIT AROUND SEPT 10 , WITH 3 WKS TO GO. AND 1 MORE YEAR LEFT ON HIS CONTRACT. SORT OF LIKE B.BONDS IN BEING SELFISH. Well the ownership didnt have deep pockets and started selling/ trading players away 1 year later. Don't blame Santo , he was a veteran and a hardworking player, 3 yrs his senior.
Mario, I was there in '74' - Santo cried b/c he couldn't win the 3B job from Bill Melton or the 2B from Mike Andrews. He cried about being the DH. Ron's biggest issue was the fact that Chuck Tanner would let Dick do whatever whenever he wanted. Statistically, you are obviously correct, Frank was the best offensive White Sox player to wear the uniform, but it was Dick Allen who wore it best.
As I read once years ago, when Ron Santo saw Dick Allen show up five minutes before a game and the manager Chuck Tanner ask him "do you want to play?" that's where he had to get out. Even though he had one more year on his contract, Santo let the White Sox keep their money.
I played basketball what's Dick Allen in 1960 when Wampum😅 won the Pennsylvania basketball state championship. as a senior he was our leader. the most gifted athlete I've ever seen!!! Jim Santelli
I remember Richie Allens homer that Richie Ashburn called.Went over the Billboard sign in almost dead center at Connie Mack stadium. Hi was stunned as he called it.
Never forget when I was a kid in 1972 and Dick Allen hit a center field home run (440') that rang off one of those speakers and damn near took the pitchers head off
The two players that made the ball leave the park the fastest were Willie Mays -- and Ritchie Allen. They were absolute ropes that might have been outs if the shortstop were 15' tall. He was really fun to watch.
Remember Allen hitting towering shots over the center field fence when he was a Phillie. I agree what Bill Melton said if you think Frank Thomas could hit them far you should of seen Dick Allen!
I remember the Sox were playing a double header, and Dick got a rest for the second game. Chuck Tanner asked him to pinch hit in the second game with the Sox down. He hit the go-ahead homer for the Sox!
Yes, I was there with two of my friends, seats in the upper deck right behind home plate. It was Bat Day and everyone got a Bill Melton home run king bat from his 1971 season. Over 55,000 at the park. Sox were down by two in the 9th against the Yankees with Sparky Lyle on the mound. His pinch hit 3-run homer was the best game I ever saw and probably ever will!
@@lastcomiskey1990 No....that's good! I've seen videos where the creator tried to combine background music and live sound, and it doesn't work. They both get ruined. It's best to pick one or the other. This is perfect Soul-Pop for '72-'74. It's like Staple Singers Lite! ✌
Chicago had a better record than Detroit in 1972 (which was cut short by eight games due to a strike) If Milwaukee had been in the West vs. Chicago (the Brewers are slightly further West) and all else was the same well...
It does look odd considering we're so used to their black-white schemes today but I grew up w/ the 70's looks and the 80's looks that had red in the scheme. Years back the White Sox had red-white-blue schemes. The 1932 Chicago team had three jerseys and that "alternate" look was quite interesting as to the logo along w/ the stripes.
No one hit a ball harder than Dick Allen. You never left your seat if he was due up that inning. A magical time on the South Side!
1972 MVP season kept the Sox from leaving Chicago. What a talent.
Will look into this relocation threat. Thanks!

I still have that Sports Illustrated magazine with Richie ( Dick ) Allen on the cover juggling baseballs with the cigarette in his mouth, classic!
It was a great SI cover.
Awesome Video.....Fantastic Memories !!!!!

The Phillies organization of the 1960s should be ashamed. Not only Allen, but Alex Johnson was also callously cast aside.
Alex Johnson was a jerk.
I loved watching Dick Allen hit! LEGENDARY POWER!!! When he hit a baseball, it STAYED hit!! He should be in the HOF.

My first favorite ball player.
IMO, Dick Allen was the best player to wear a White Sox uniform. It was a shame that Ron Santo drove him out of town.
And, I never wanted Santo, with his .221 average and 5 home runs, on the team.

Ron Santo was jealous, and signed with the wrong team, but he was 3-4 years older and was right. D. Allen was lazy..

I've got all my Sport Illustrated Chicago White Sox covers(57-06) including the DickAllen era . 3:17. Oh the Cubs too , their Chicago
Dick Allen's arrival along with a winning record brought the White Sox fans to the ballpark in 1972.
He was the reason people went to the game....
Fun.. fun.. fun ! ! !
A legend period
Nice job. Great soundtrack...although it would have been nice to hear the live calls and game sounds. Can't have both, I guess.
Thanks! Didn't have sound for most of these clips otherwise would have included

The White Sox should resurrect that "Chicago" script from the road jerseys with the "White Sox" written in the flourish. Cool look.
I loved those uniforms!
Wasnt a great color . See the Phillies wear that too in that era or just after 2:48
Dick Allen gives GOD the glory for the talent he had, Amen! And he didn't wear batting gloves.
What is the music? I like it a lot.

3 seasons
