Thank you, Thambi, for supplying me my pro wrestling magazines for all those 1980s years. Life will never be the same again.
That brings a tear. Growing up in Holland Village, this newsstand and it's wide variety of magazines brings many memories throughout my life... magazines i read for leisure, magazines I bought for that lazy beach vacation, magazines to inspire home renovation... I hope in the end, there will not be an end to print, and there's a place for both print and digital media.
Thank you, Mr. Thambi and to your father as well.
For over twenty years of my life, through childhood right until my late twenties, your magazine store had been a huge part of my life.
It is a sad day for me as i watched this video.
Thank you once again, sir.
This shop is the reason I came to Singapore in the first place. am also an employee from 2013 to 2019 .. Those days of working there are unforgettable days in my life..
Thank you sam (senthil murugan)
If New York had Rizzoli's bookstore, Singapore had Thamby's newsstand 😢
He is iconic at Holland Village. Please let him stay or help him to find another place nearby.
Alot of greedy landlords in Singapore are from China and Malaysia. They buy real estate here and then raise price so high without any consideration.
I used to visit his store when young
Wow!
Been a loyal customer of Thambi magazines for a decade when I was still studying in Singapore. Back then his father was still around. Every time I come he would come to ,e with my monthly magazines ready. Definitely an icon of Holland V! Sad to see Thambi go 😢 Thank you for the memories (and the magazines 💙)
Very sad my childhood place
Most of my music magazines bought from his store and I still keep them!
All the best in the future
Thanks for carrying my favourite WhatHifi and Active Trader magazines in the 1990s to the 2000s... You're a star 🤩😪
Thanks for all the tips n tricks magazines
Thanks Thambi, will really miss your store. When I was a JC student studying nearby, I bought all my Man Utd magazines from Thambi. No other place carries such a wide selection of magazines as Thambi. Holland V will not be Holland V without this store.
Yes..Holland V will not be h.v without this stores..
CNA, possible to lead a petition with his greedy landlords ?
What happened? Did someone asked him to go? Such an iconic place. I lived nearby Holland Village. Once a while drop by to roam around the vicinity. Sad to see him go. It seems he is forced to stop. Can the government help him?

could be due to ever increasing rents with smaller space for business
Landlord ask him to siam
Clearly it's not easy for him.
Good guy,
there goes the holland v icon
Sad. Hope he can find another good location
Hoping web connection is working and find someone interested to save the business 😢😢😢
Greed by landlords and interest rates, unrealistic inflationary pressures for such a small country. The middle and lower class of Singapore will cease to exist soon.
even trishaw riders are going to cease soon
awww… 😢.. as a Malaysian, who frequently flew to SG since the 80s, n made it our 2nd home..we lived at Farrer Rd, which is really walking distance to Holland V, and now that we have MRT, its just a station away. Holland Village has been our ‘playground’ n go to place ever since n this magazine store is the only place u can buy international magazines n papers.. sad to see it closing but i wish u guys all the best. thank you for the memories…🫶🏻🙏🏻
Can we revisit this rent thing? What’s the value add with a disappearing heritage and who benefits?

I used to buy all of my 'Roy of the Rovers' magazines from you in the 80's n 90's. Good times.
Thanks Thambi.
Wherever path u chose, I wish u all the best ahead!
Blessing and good luck. Regards.

What the heck, that place is an icon. I remember i used to buy heavy metal comics and videogames magazines over there. That place is an icon. Can the area constituency mps do something about it?
Who's next? Basheer bookstore at bras basah?

Grew up in Holland Drive Blk 16 in the 90's.. definitely know this iconic magazine place.
I love that stall. Now I’m going to miss my crossword puzzles.
alot of memories at the shop. thank you and I hope you can get another space to continue!

Thambi, i saw you many time when i frequently visit holland village. I wish you all the best and i am sad that the familiar store will disappear.
Thambi's shop is a Singapore institution. Irreplaceable.. memories of an entire generation wiped out on a whim through sheer greed and materialism. This is a disgrace and every person involved in this decision should be ashamed of themselves. I'd rather they removed the Istana than this. Singapore, what on earth happened to you?
They already removed the giant merlion in Sentosa .it never the same .when we step in

Going to miss the store convenience n variety thank you for these years of ease🙏🙏
All the good things are disappearing from greed
Good things disappears because life moves on to find better things. We need to be thankful for what we have now and learn to let go.
@@CattleFarmer667 true find better things never seem to oh ya find all things in JB..😅
Not greed, but change of time and technology. Who still read magazines? Certainly not you. I havent read magazines for almost a decade either.
That's what my Blacksmith said

So Sad! 😢 This Treasure Trove is IRREPLACEABLE!! CAN'T BEAT THE OLD SCHOOL TACTILE EXPERIENCE OF TURNING A PAGE!!❤
I always loved magazines even in a digital age I will always want to buy a printed magazines fresh from the press it’s magical to smell the brand new magazine that I bought. Went there last year and I’m surprised it’s now closed was looking forward to my next visit and buy magazines there. Hope they will find a way to get another place for their stand, hope for the best.
Sometimes the authorities should reasonably consider catering to the convenience of customers & landmark significance !!!!
Thank you ❤
Mama shop, bookshop, cd/video shop and game store are those thing in the 90s and starting to vanish going future as supermarket, mini mart, digital store are taking over
Bought my first magazine there in 1996.
But not surprised he has to close and I doubt it is because of space and what not.
Look around you, 9 out of 10 stare at their mobile phones constantly.
When walking, when eating, when meeting friends, in public transport, in the toilet and at work.
9 out of 10 are sick addicted zombies.
There is still a demand for physical magazines. Demand and supply. Publishers would stop printing if there is no demand. Older people would buy magazines. Specific places would need magazines e.g. Prisons as mentioned in the video. There are also some types of magazines that are collectible.
Most people buy their magazines, sometimes on impulse, on the way to the cashier at the Supermarkets
@@chrisl9934 The demand is dying out fast.
In the past, and you don’t need to go back too many years relatively speaking, you would see shops selling magazines quite frequently.
Some larger and some smaller, but still around.
Today those shops are few and far apart.
Beside the Holland V. shop I can only think of libraries, tourist spots and Changi which sells magazines and with somewhat large selection of magazines.
Plus one ancient Aunty selling newspapers below my block.
This trade is dying out, I’d say it is dead already, and any shop ONLY selling magazines is doomed to die.
Ppl don’t appreciate printed stuff anymore unless it is legal tender :o)
I will miss the book store at Holland village!
part of ghim moh sec sch days memories
damn, it breaks my heart seeing how passionate this man is with his profession, it is beyond business as he cares so much with the customers and cannot imagine what he will do in life without the store. i just hope the government see this video and ponder the best solution for all.

I visited the shop before. Sad to see it close. All the best Thambi
Gonna miss this Sam. That time I always go there to buy gaming magazines without fail
Used to buy a football magazine called SHOOT from this shop in the 80s.90s my teenage area i used to stay at Holland Close
Good Luck Aneh
Thank you sir for the hardwork, i alway afternoon buy guitar maz at there, now have to look for new place to buy guitar maz.
Well change is the only constant in the universe. This will only go down on my memory lane. Pity
Thanks for making my childhood Thambi magazine
End of an era.
Amazing and iconic business 😢
Thambi should be an Online Magazine store where all magazines can be displayed online for show and purchased.
So sad… times change…
Eighty years is a long time to realized what is impermanence.
God Blessed You All 🙏
I am sadden by this loss.
thank you, from the WWE magazine's merger to its end ive got every issue here
Losing a magazine store is a pity. But with everything gone online, paper magazines may have lost their appeal. We can't help but go with the times and accept the change to the new media.
It’s very heartbreaking to see this iconic magazine store closing down after so many years.
What a sad close, knew his family when I was staying at Holland Close, wish him and his family well
It’s a huge pity, I remember the shop when staying nearby at Dover rise in 2002-2005!
😢❤
it feel very sad for him and he is holding back his tears 😊 anyway in life they might be certain things that we do not agree or like it but there is nothing much we can do about it whether we like it or not..
this is the system we just have to accept it..
real sg store closing down one by one to replace by al the value shope spa massage handphone shop?? sg really gone down the drain.
Very sad he has go and close the shop. That’s the first stall whenever I visited the place 😂
Yes print makes it difficult to choose what you want to read so you end your reading everything
How he get in touch with magazine like "Gila-Gila", "Anak-Anak Sidek", "Doraemon" etc. I assume as have as looks old?
Is it true some of it been edited? The sudden gone of it from life like a creation of dullness successfully. The injuring-movement is unspotted as "it is just magazine", to create a profile of "problematic and childish", I wonder who reads.
We need to save this legacy and heritage! Is the government seeing this??
It’s a sad story for a man’s love for his trade to close door. Mr Thambi, hope u could consider checking with HDB using for your home or a void deck area / void deck shop to operate. U may want to seek out MP’s help too. MY God bless u.
Magazines? Then what is that cabinet behind him?
Cannot understand why the authority did not allow him to have the magazine racks outside the shop. A mockery to heritage preservation.
That's the price you have to pay in the name of progress
used to buy from his father in the 80’s 😟
Thank you for your Air Force Monthly mags
Yet another sad story of something closing down for concrete and glass
You cannot just get stuck in time and your business never transformed.
Hard copy magazines are no longer the way ppl get their leisure reading from.
This shows if one is so hard stuck not to learn and change with the times, they and their business, will become obsolete!
Its not abt rental in todays context media business is facing great challenges disruptive technology has made news available at the very finger tips. This is why gov are also reviewing funding to non profitable media company. Sustainability the world is changing faster than ever this a secret that cant be unveiled.

Please consider setting up shop in a HDB void deck. There are plenty of spaces available. Can someone arrange for that? Such an iconic stall should not just fade away. It’s so sad….

All good things come to an end indeed, very sad
😭
Surely there’s somewhere else he can continue his business at?
VT0
This is so sad ...
i use to buy guns and ammo
and also “nam” from his store.
Nobody buy newspapers n high rentals r the key reasons

Jamus Lim asked the Minister whether there has been any consideration by the Ministry to legislate on the maximum rental fee adjustments by landlords following a lease renewal
very soon SG no more magazine and news paper store due to Digital Era
Out of place. One Holland Village is timely and chic and that's what consumers want.
Do y’all know who the hell say need to down his display area by half? He’s is obviously not blocking the road, why need to be so excessively critical until you destroy others livelihood? Whoever make this decision come out to explain please.
He closed down soul tongue university, keep his business open can or not
Ww3 start soon to help this man
Welp, another one bites the dust…be ready to see more of these in the “new singapore” where money reigns supreme above all unaliving culture, icons and traditions that we have come to love and cherish…
very sad
🫰👍
Memories erased.. souls erased. Glory be to money 💰 🤑 💸 🙏
There were at least 3 HDB coffeeshops that transacted for 8-figure sums in the first half of 2022, including the coffeeshops located at 848 Yishun Street 81 and another at 201 Tampines Street 21 which transacted for $40 million and $41.68 million, respectively. This has translated into even higher food prices for the patrons as stall holders had to increase prices on their cooked dishes with the new rents almost doubling.
LAUNDRYMEN ARE HERE🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Another robbery of fond memories and good old times.
