Most of Rammsteins' songs are left open to interpretation, several people can listen to the same song and come up with totally different meanings. I read that he takes a lot of his lyrics and inspiration from his own poetry books and also some from personal experiences.
I can only think of 4 songs (atm) that actually have to do with real events.. Wiener Blut, Mein Teil, Rammstein and Donaukinder. ❤
Several band members said in different contexts that they don't have a clue, what Till wants to say with his lyrics. And Till himself refuses to give interpretations almost completely. He usually gives only general statements like "Most of the songs are about love in all it's shapes". So all interpretation is up to the listener.

As a german and rammstein fan, I can tell you: I still don't really understand the meaning of the song :) Even as a native speaker the lyrics are pretty cryptic and up to individual interpretation. I have never seen anyone from the band ever mention what the lyrics mean, so you're certainly right about that part.

Sometimes music doesn’t need a translation…..you just need to get with it. That’s why I love Rammstein, I can just listen to it and not care what it means if I want. Just listen and flow with the music.

Well, when it comes to lyrics, I know that Till once said that it was open for everyone to understand their lyrics the way they wanted. And I think that it is why they usually don't comment about the meaning themselves. You can, for example, see in their "making of" videos what some song means for them individually. But I am really not sure if they ever really said what some song was about in a way that a listener cannot take it in a different way. Maybe, but I cannot think of any right now.
Now, maybe other fans or LIFAD members know something more. And also we must not forget native German speakers who might understand lyrics way better and in a completely different way than the rest of us who try to understand a translation.
I personally struggle with some opinions of some songs. In few other cases it is very clear what a song is about but I prefer my own meaning.
Anyway, their first two albums are different. I know many fans whose fav albums are those two and usually people either prefer that era or the later sound. I am somewhere in the middle. I prefer the later sound and I don't know if I would be a R+ fan if their sound remained the same as it was in the first two albums (probably not), but on the other hand, I love so many songs from the first album, even though I prefer the live versions of them, again because of the sound of it.

The spawning season represents an absolute loss of control for many fish, with the sole, evolutionary goal of having to reproduce. Salmon even die after reproduction. It may be that Till is describing parallels to the human sexual urge here.

There is no explicit Rammstein explanation of the lyrics. So the interpretation has to be done by the listeners. Sometimes you can get hints from the "making of" videos (normally with English subtitles) about the inspiration for a song. The lyrics of some songs (Amerika, Deutschland, Radio, ...) are quite obvious. For other songs (Rammstein, Mein Teil, Ich will, ...) knowing recent incidents help understanding the background. And some of their songs (like the catchy song OK from the last album) can only be understood by native German language speakers, even if you got a correct translation, because they just fool arround with the German language. But some songs are full of irritating symbolism and remind me at fever dreams so that I'm not sure if even Till has a rational explanation of their meanings.

Sometimes they get asked in interviews but some meanings are pretty obvious from the lyrics what they are atleast getting at. This is obviously using the idea of spawning time for fish, who's only purpose in life is to reproduce and likening it to humans with the same desire albeit with a bit of a twisted view. A fish isn't gonna be bothered about who it mates with. Just animal instinct.
Many texts show a metaphor, therefore the texts are difficult to understand for people who do not speak German as their mother tongue and cannot be translated 1 to 1.

But even I where the native language is German, it is sometimes difficult to understand the deeper meaning of the text, you can not take word for word, you have to see the deep meaning behind it. 😉
Song is mainly for fish spawning….only the dog does not fit in the picture. Maybe about random sex which is the fish one….

Oh I would disagree, some of their songs are VERY straightforward. And I think Laichzeit is one of them.
Rammstein has never given any explanation or interpretation of their lyrics.
Do not understand this type of music so will not comment on it ....but DO I miss Dire Straits!!??
