I was gonna thumbs down this video just out of jealousy that my thumb can’t reach tenths, but the iPad was too far and the thumbs up was the only thing my short fingers could reach.
Felix Greenburg I’ve actually been making a concerted effort over this time, and all white key tenths came rather quickly...I’m now working on the black/white key tenths, and they’re all possible! Some were tough to hit without hitting other keys, and others were only possible at very light velocities. They’re getting cleaner and louder every week. :-)
@@rodrigoappendino It didn't really take more than a few months! And personally, flexibility was maybe less than half job. I found it was mostly a matter of muscle memory to approach how to strike each set; the angle, wrist movement, etc. Just about all of the are effortless now, although B-D# and Db-F are still challenges. Honestly, however, I don't need to employ them very often. I happy to have 5/6s of all of them ready whenever I need them!
If you struggle to make an octave not enough stretching in the world can help you reach a 10th. This is such a persisting myth. If you can reach an octave while maintaining the arch, then yes there's still some room with some stretching and strengthening of the muscles. But for someone like me with a hand span of 7 inches fully stretched (hand is almost completely flattened. Arch is lost at that degree of stretching), there is no way stretching can help me any further. Average female hand span is less than 8 inches. If most men need some stretching exercises to make it a 10th, imagine what most female pianists have to deal with. The ergonomically scaled keyboard is greatly needed.
Yes this is so true!! I have very small hands and I can barely reach a ninth even if my hand is stretched out 180° . At this point I can try to stretch as much as I want and it won’t change anything
@@trebletrouble1348 I can reach a ninth and hardly a tenth at the edge of the keyboard and I don't consider having woman sized hands lol. Indeed it's actually pretty average for a man but quite big for most women. I have never met a woman reaching a tenth (from personal experience of course). Most women I have met could only reach an octave and only a few a ninth (with difficulty most of the time).
One of these days ill have a company that makes instruments and sound equipment. Ill create a product that solves this problem for you and others like you.
Yes, there is a place for a smaller keyboards and manufacturers absolutely should produce it! However, OPENING up your hand and increasing your arch is possible if you do the right hand excercises. I used to just be able to stretch a 10th with my pinky and thumb in a straight line and arch completely flattened, and now only 2 months later I can do an 11th and still retain some arch. I can maybe make a video on this in the future, but the key is to supplement your stretching with strength training. I do rice bucket (three variations: opening your hand as wide as possible and closing, grabbing the rice and twisting, pinching), pinch holds, etc.. and for stretching I do opening my hand as wide as possible and holding, keeping the fingers curved and widening the space between my fingers (this will set your fingers wider over time) and gently pulling back at the base of my fingers. If you look at "big" hands like Rachmaninoff for example, they are not exceptionally large compared to "small" hands, they are just exceptionally open and free! This is not a wild idea, bodybuilders drastically change the entire frame of their backs as they progress in their training, the same if possible for your hand. It IS possible to change the entire frame of your hand!
When i started playing piano, I couldn't reach an octave. Now I can reach an 11th (18 years old now, I'm not a 13 year old running around saying I can reach a 12th)
"It't not so much about hand size" ... easy for someone with large hands to say. There's a reason the best concert pianists have large hands. Its like height in basketball.
Exactly. Once you're not an absolute beginner anymore, you're normally able to stretch your fingers as wide as possible. And that's where it ends. You can't reach the 10th if your hands are to small. It's annoying to hear all the time... Duhhhh it's not about size, it's about technique. No it's not.
After years of stretching I can finally play the DbF 10th and all my 11ths without split notes and I can voice them. I can also play CE near the black keys now, don’t give up hope, the long term work pays off.
Fascia stretching and fascia massage is actually healthy, I have fixed my tendonitis and wrist pain with Liebscher&Bracht exercises permanently by doing them 3 times a week (Just avoid overstretching - slow and steady wins - and you're good to go). Great to see, that you can actually develop the reach over time, too. I thought, you could do stuff with this since I noticed that some large chords are much more comfortable after years. Acupressure is also very good to take care of hands and fingers :)
Thank you for this. I'm arranging a 3 part organ piece by Bach for the piano, and in order for the inner voice to be present, it requires several stretches of a m10, with 5 playing the continuo and 1 singing the libretto. Sometimes I can nail it, but most times the continuo is botched. I figured if I just kept trying, one day I'd get it. As a piano teacher I should know better. I will begin carefully stretching my hands and check back in a week from now.
After one day of stretching I can comfortably reach most 10ths, including all in the arrangement I'm writing. Some 10ths are difficult (D - F#) and others are not yet possible for me (Ab - C).
Fully stretched I can reach an octave easily with both hands. Nine is hard already .__. but it's really not about the pain, that like after doing sports, so nothing big. I just can't see how I can ever be able to achieve a bigger span with my... tiny hands...I will practice stretching some more...
my hands are pretty small, with stretching the max I can reach is a very uncomfortable 10th where my pinkie and thumb are literally in a straight line. no more stretching is going to help the fact that the maximum possible distance between my pinkie tip and thumb tip is smaller than the distance of an 10-11th.
My thumb and pinky can be a perfect 180° straight line, and only reach a 9th. No amount of stretching will get me to a 10th. I can barely taste it but will never reach it unless my hands miraculously grow
Honestly, it’s the White key to Black Major thirds and visa versa (Db,D,Eb,E,Ab,A,Bb,and B) basically everything except C,F,F#,and G. Those are the major struggle 🤦🏾♂️🥷🏾 but it is doable! Great video ✊🏾
An underlooked strategy- getting a smaller keyboard Idk why they don't make more high quality keyboards with smaller keys tbh . My right hand can reach 10ths but my left hand can't quite yet haha.
No matter how hard and long you stretch, if your hands are small (reaching only the 9th on a full span), you will never be able to play the 10th without arpeggiating. This video is great but only for those with spider long fingers like you have. Thanks anyway.
Whatever you want to do on piano, you can do perfectly well be playing octaves instead of 10ths. And also you can roll your 10ths if you really do want to play them. So you play the low note and then engage the pedal, then move up to the high note. As you play more you often get more range too. I think I could only reach 9ths when I started, now I can hit some 11ths.
I can reach 10th on left hand but not 11th. On right hand I can reach 11th with my pinky and ring finger. However, I can touch the edge of the 12th with the ring finger but not the pinky for some reason.
