ABSOLUTE Beginners New Orleans Rhythm and Blues Piano. Lesson 3: Pocky Way (Tresillo)
I'm starting this video series to act as a very basic lesson course for beginner pianists wanting to learn New Orleans rhythm and blues.
This lesson will cover how a particular Latin rhythm appeared in New Orleans R&B. Sorry for the delay, I've been on holiday in a very windy Brighton.

The 10nth in the left hand is a signature fixture of players such as Jon Cleary, Mac Rebennack and James Booker. In this video I'm going to show you the essential and fundamental voicings and bass runs Dr John might use in a slow blues This video is not for beginners. You will need to know the structure of the eight and twelve bar blues as well as triads, voicings and extensions. Understanding ...

How to play tenths if your hands can't reach
Просмотров 34 тыс.5 лет назад
This is a piano tutorial on how to reach an interval commonly used in certain styles of gospel and New Orleans slow blues, but can add a melodic and diatonic depth to any style of playing such as pop or classical Hand size isn't as limiting as you'd think, as with minimal effort one can reach entire tones or even thirds larger than someone who's never played piano Insta: @felixgreenburgmusic

      Whatever you want to do on piano, you can do perfectly well be playing octaves instead of 10ths. And also you can roll your 10ths if you really do want to play them. So you play the low note and then engage the pedal, then move up to the high note. As you play more you often get more range too. I think I could only reach 9ths when I started, now I can hit some 11ths.

    Why not play second inversion F and G chords in the left hand? It's more economical for hand movement. Although I suppose playing the root as the lowest note "anchors" the arpeggiated chord better, establishing clearly the chord progression.

      At this point in time bass instrument amplification was pretty basic. So often in New Orleans they liked to double up multiple instruments, piano, guitar, horns to make the double bass louder. The downside of this is that you have to be pretty strict about the bass part, because all the musicians need to know they're playing the same thing. So the bass is usually simplistic

      That kind of left hand pattern was kind of my own invention. It's kind of a modernisation of the old "habanera" patterns used in Contradanza. like Ignacio Cervantes' "Ilusiones Perdidas". Some of this filtered down into New Orleans jazz, the really famous song very popular with NOLA RnB piano fans being Jelly Roll Morton's "The Crave"

      Later I'm going to make a video on a related rhythm from NOLA R&B called the "pocky way". I could make a follow up video on how to play that in a stride pattern

    Thank you for this. I'm arranging a 3 part organ piece by Bach for the piano, and in order for the inner voice to be present, it requires several stretches of a m10, with 5 playing the continuo and 1 singing the libretto. Sometimes I can nail it, but most times the continuo is botched. I figured if I just kept trying, one day I'd get it. As a piano teacher I should know better. I will begin carefully stretching my hands and check back in a week from now.

    • @aenema22
      @aenema22 5 месяцев назад

      After one day of stretching I can comfortably reach most 10ths, including all in the arrangement I'm writing. Some 10ths are difficult (D - F#) and others are not yet possible for me (Ab - C).

    my hands are pretty small, with stretching the max I can reach is a very uncomfortable 10th where my pinkie and thumb are literally in a straight line. no more stretching is going to help the fact that the maximum possible distance between my pinkie tip and thumb tip is smaller than the distance of an 10-11th.

    No matter how hard and long you stretch, if your hands are small (reaching only the 9th on a full span), you will never be able to play the 10th without arpeggiating. This video is great but only for those with spider long fingers like you have. Thanks anyway.

      Your fingers do stretch a little, for example I can play a 10th with my left hand from playing the guitar with my fretting hand and a ninth on my strumming hand. However, stretching an extra two notes might not be possible.
