About 50 years ago a friend of me lived near the terminus of number 5. At the corner of Wattletree an Burke road there was a milk bar. The owner of this gave us sometimes a free ice - normal price was 10 cent😉 A great time in the old days in Melbourne. Nice Video😀
Peter Leidgen Ha. I lived there 1953-63 when it was still pounds shillings and pence. My sister tried to buy one of each of four four-a-penny lollies for s total of one penny, but they weren't having it. The tram left without the conductor once as he was still buying hie meat pie in that shop. It had a horse trough outside, and it still had a big Breakfast at Tiffany's poster on the wall when we left. John Landy used to train in Central Park over the road. Many happy memories.
From the 30th of October 2023 the route 5 and 64 will swap shuttle service so route 5 goes while length of route for a more accessible journey The 3a is also getting removed
20:15 In Newcastle, this would be perhaps an ABC route(5a) as Station ABHN-Newcastle was moved from Ch.5 to Ch.5a in 1976 to clear space for FM radio station 2NUR to open two years later.
Great video. Can you walk the dog on the yoyo service?? Are the drivers highly strung ?? LOL!! Seriously, Melbourne has the best tramway system and thanks for sharing this with us. STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY in Melbourne and Victoria.
SF light-rail Metro lines are doing something like this. Up till recently all trains had to use the one Market St. tunnel. Then COVID-19 canceled all subway trains. Now the City wants to re-instate some but not have as many in the tunnel at once, so J inbound ends where it would go down the tunnel (pax picked up by N and T). Likewise L, M, and K will stop at West Portal, where there will be a shuttle (yo-yo) that goes to the Embarcadero.
Note separation of, trams & road vehicles, like WA has on electric trains, Perth to Mandurah ( South of Perth.) All the way down middle of a freeway, all overbridges for vehicles.
I worked on the yo yo 40 years ago as a driver. It used to operate all day Sunday as well. So dreary, particularly if you had a lot of lay up time and a boring conductor.
In those days the headway most of the evening was 20 minutes, so that meant two cars and that lay up. Sounds like not a lot has changed. I did a shift once where your car would come off Cotham Road and rather than run in would run via Dandenong Road to Orrong Road and do a few trips on the yo yo.
@@darylcheshire1618 I think that might have been that French guy who performed all sorts of antics. I was over conductor antics even though I was one for 5 months. I had to drive whilst they would often sit on their tails. Anyway in my manuscript "The Tram to Bang Road", which I hope to get published I have something to say about the damn yo-yo and Malvern Burke Road and the other Malvern roads of the time. You heard it first here!
That complicates something that works really well now as both trams run from different depots. All passengers are aware of how the yo yo works and the passenger numbers wouldn't justify a change or increase in service anyway
It's a bit more complicated with trams. The track direction covers the whole trip from start to finish. Generally speaking if a tram starts north of the GPO Elizabeth and Bourke St it's considered the up track and down track from the south. You can have two trams travelling in the one direction with one on the up and one on the down.
Are we going to be transferring the name to the 64 now with the new (oct 2023) route changes and all?
Looks like it. The Yo Yo will still be the Yo Yo
I feel that much more enlightened. Thanks mate! :)
Thanks for looking.
Love your videos

You know what I'm surprised they haven't done here is something like they have for the route 30 when it terminates at St Vincent Plaza
The upgrade probably wouldn't justify the cost. It works pretty well as it is with very few issues due to the amount of trams at night.

The 5 / 64 chsnge makes sense. The 3a removal will be interesting as it's a bit of a capacity loss for Swanston St.

Neil Forbes what part of the video were you referring to

Being resident (57 years, ago, from Perth, WA) of metro Melb., enjoy. JimT
Thanks for looking. Your contributions are appreciated
Biggest yo-yo I have ever seen.😁
Thanks 😊
Yeah pretty cool. Thanks for watching.
@@Schony747 .... well I think it's gonna be a while until I can fly down and ride in a few teams... watching your videos is the next best thing 😁
One of your early titles says it terminates at Malvern and Burke, but it is Wattletree and Burke of course.
Should have read Malvern - Burke Road even better Malvern - Burke and Wattletree Roads. Thanks for looking.

You can rock the baby in the cradle but those are optional extra accessories you need to bring yourself 😀😀😀😀
Great video and nice info on the description 👌👍
Thanks Man 😀😀
Note logo, PT>V is transport organisation for Victoria. Enjoy all Schony items.
So when customers connect with the 64 city bound, both A/B/Z (64) and D1/Z (5) fit barely on the platform stop? Goodness.
Front door for safety so it all works and no one gets injured.

Here in Melbourne nothing has been cut back. Extra services are being added to help social distancing.
Schony747 This was an excellent decision, amid not many.

Still about 10 minutes at each end these days and a run time of around 10 minutes each way.

I remember one conductor who would swing on the hand grips. Not boring?

This is something i never seen before and it's interesting how tram tracker doesn't show those information
An interesting working and interesting it's not listed on tram tracker as you pointed out
Great video. Really interesting to learn about quirky operations like this one. 👍🤔
Thanks for having a look
Memories memories.
Yeah as you would know one of the easier gigs at Malvern.
Why the trams are almost empty? Melboourne is a large city no?
The Yo Yo is always pretty empty. The loadings are light at night and is why the 64 carries passengers from the city.
a better way would be to alternate every other tram to the 2 destinations
That complicates something that works really well now as both trams run from different depots. All passengers are aware of how the yo yo works and the passenger numbers wouldn't justify a change or increase in service anyway
a tram can only go backwards or forwards not up and down lol
It can travel on the up track and back on the down track 😀😀
@@Schony747 ok then in our railway terms you go up to london and down coming away lol

A bit of up-and-down to this one! Might be a bit strung out! LOL
