      It’s pretty difficult to get a sailing boat to roll. Maybe it was more obvious to him that it wasn’t that close yet.
      He was talking about draining because taking just three or so waves like that in quick succession could have made for a really bad time. You don’t usually sail with as thin margins as that.

    • @OKOK-hm2is
      @OKOK-hm2is 3 месяца назад +14

      That is exact reason why he is worrying about drain holes - getting your cockpit full of water will make roll MUCH easier

    • @user-yd1cd8gq8m

      The dude was far away from rolling. Basically if you watch his videos, you'll find out what a crazy sailor he is and it's not his wildest storm

      Shipping water I think is the expression when filling faster than bailing

    • @keithmillard2527
      @keithmillard2527 2 месяца назад +3

      His boat has a large "cruising keel" about half the length of the boat, not a little "fin keel". That long, heavy keel with a huge surface area can move back and forth under water fairly easily. But the farther you lean, the closer it gets to the surface, and you're almost never going to get a cruising keel out of the water, which is what you would need to fully capsize. Cruising boats have a cruising keel for exactly that reason, and because they hold a heading in heavy weather better than a fin keel. He knows that, and owns that boat for that reason, and doesn't worry about capsizing for that reason. He also has ways of pumping or bailing water out of the cockpit, but doing that while sailing in those conditions is 1) very difficult and 2) a moot point because it's just going to fill again. Like he said, Time to head in.

    One day I was lazily taking a bath and realized how slow the bathtub drained and that made me think if my cockpit drains … Next thing I did the next winter was to add two more drain holes each being doubled. It was more effective a couple of times : when the cockpit could had been filled and drain into the cabin… Nothing fancy in terms of weather : just left Jersey Island at the wrong time and got caught in the Raz Blanchard by a force 6.
    I would advise you to tuck these sheets away : as loose as they are they're not great help for the water to drain.
    But You already know that I suppose.
    Good video.

    What waves ???? Trying sailing in a southern Atlantic ocean storm with breaking waves 8m+ in height and winds 80knts + ........ survival......my whole crew were terrified. I had to helm for 3 hours and at its peak we hoved to for 26 hours. I don't care what anyone says, in a major storm if you have sea room the only best option in a sailing yacht is to Hove to and let the storm pass over you. To many risks doing anything else. Seen to many people think they know better and loose people, vessels, injuries or their own lives. Take this advice and practice your storm hove to tactics. Or ignore it at your peril. Remember that NO true sailor is afforded the luxury of Hindsight.
