When I moved out for the first time my parents offered me a suitcase full of all the old vks tapes we watched as a kid. I was so psyched!... Till I picked it up. That hoe was heavy as hell! The only tapes I wish I kept were the old Godzillas we bought from city market.
I don't think anyone mentioned this, but I find it incredibly charming and fitting that Anne's singing voice is untrained and a bit off tune. It's got this child-like amateur nature to it and it's just adorably perfect for a sort of ditsy ragdoll tbh.
Didi Conn (who voiced Ann) had laryngitis when she recorded her lines for Ann. She wanted to go back and re-record but Richard Williams wanted to keep it because it added to the emotional scenes
As a french person, I really like the way Babette talks. Like, most french characters in english media are english people talking with their botched french pronounciation as if it's accurate (it's not), which I find annoying. Babette on the other hand, she sounds like a french person with a botched english pronounciation, which is accurate since she's french (though she still pronounces english better than most of the people I met). She even pronounces the french R properly, something I never heard any english person do EVER when they try to make impressions of french people. But also sometimes she pronounces the R like in english. She's pretty inconsistent, which is accurate to the way french people speak english when they don't know it well. Babette is the best french character in the entirety of english media, as far as I'm aware. For example, Saberspark called her out on pronouncing "Paris" wrong, but actually no, because in french the S in Paris is silent. She's pronouncing english words wrong because she pronounces them like a french person would, which is believable for a french character obviously. More believable than any of the other "french" characters that are botching french pronounciation, making them annoying to listen to for me, and not believable as people who's native language is supposed to be french.
Wait, do people usually pronounce Paris with an s? Because I’ve honestly never bothered in actually seeing if they pronounce French correctly in movies, I often just end up getting second hand embarrassment from mispronounced words.
It makes me so sad that animation is clearly the most complex and magical art form but also the most dismissed just because children find beauty in its whimsy
I think this is the first time I've seen where a movie gives specific animators credit for specific things. Usually all of the animators are lumped together under "Animation" during the credits and you wouldn't know who did what unless you purposely searched for it. Really cool that this does that!
Disney did that in the '90s! It was at the end, obviously, but they'd give each major character a card headed with their name, and maybe a rough sketch of them, that listed their lead animator, then their voice actor, then their other animators. I don't know why they stopped. Maybe computer animation just doesn't lend itself to the one-character-per-animator pipeline?
I love how much Digital Circus is inspired by such an underrated piece of media. Really makes me hope stuff like Pomni possibly being abducted by “pirates” or Jax and Ragatha having a possible future close Brother-Sister relationship actually appears in the show’s writing

Jax feels like the trope but cranked to 11,to the point it is much too salty. Andy feels like an old school appeoach to the trope,slower,softer, with a certain slow poise in movement.

I came here just to say that I absolutely love Frenchie - I think Sandy should’ve ditched Danny for her TBH; that would’ve been such a better ending for the movie.
One reason why I’m a fan of off-model animation, or even better, switching between and merging off-model and on-model! Off-model animation can be great for surrealism, or whimsy, or even certain characters, like if it’s meant to be exaggerated like this movie or a show like Ren and Stimpy, if it’s meant to evoke a certain aesthetic or art style like mushy clay, children’s drawings, or a dream sequence, or something completely different!
It's why stylized media ages better than any 'realistic' animation, it can maintain the suspension of disbelief so much easier because we innately know to disregard such inconsistencies with conventional expectations.
While Raggedy Anne may not be the oldest Rag doll (being arguably one of the oldest known types of toys in human history), she was definitely the most influential going forward in terms of style with the red yarn hair, patchwork dress, and character personality to affect things like the doll from Bump in the Night and The Amazing Digital Circus, and so many modern dolls. It is funny to think THIS is also what Annabelle really was, and seeing the real one in its case is hilarious, I honestly can't watch those movies without picturing the large floppy doll in place of the overly ugly porcelain one they made for the movies. Also pretty sure The Greedy inspired the Fudge in episode 2 of the Amazing Digital Circus, if not there is one other less appealing candidate for that inspiration.
So here's a fun fact. Not only was Joe Raposo the main songwriter for _Sesame Street_ for a long time, he was also brought in to do music for _Shining Time Station_ (the show created to provide a vessel for the _Thomas the Tank Engine_ shorts in the US, which also featured Raggedy Ann's voice actor Didi Conn as stationmaster Stacy Jones). One of the recurring segments on that show was a character using the station arcade's nickelodeon, which would cut to a music video made out of an original song and public domain footage. Anyway, in one episode, THE SONG WAS A COVER OF "HOME" FROM THIS MOVIE. It was even prefaced by a character half-recalling the song, as if the writers were acknowledging that it came from somewhere else.

The director of Toy Story got the idea from working on Brave Little Toaster in the 80s, so if anything Toy Story copies that, just in a way less depressing way.
There have been cartoons about toys coming to life since at least the 1930's, and stories about toys coming to life since at least the early 1800's (such as "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" from 1838 and "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" from 1816). It's just a fun, whimsical idea that has been around for a VERY long time :)
Muppet/ Sesame Street veteran Joe Raposo wrote the songs/score for Raggedy Ann and Andy, while it's not his best work it does attract a small audience and works to the film's presence

The kind of sibling love that Andy and Anne have is lost in today's society, maybe Japan still holds that sibling love but today when a brother and a sister love each other people immediately think of Alabama.
I think it’s more like people cannot grasp the concept of more than one type of love like they used to. Society is so romance obsessed that men and women can’t have platonic relationships without morons believing there’s more to it than that. It’s like we can’t truly love people as people anymore
The closest thing we have is Dipper and Mabel lol. Which is fantastic, but there should be more siblings who love each other than JUST THEM (I am the oldest of 7 siblings, cousins and step-siblings in my family and never even imagined treating them like crap or refusing to hug them. The part when Raggedy Anne was at risk of getting her heart removed scared me as a kid. However, I can't help laughing at that scene now. I know it's immature, but I can't help thinking of "I am the Great Mighty Poo, and I'm going to throw my 💩 at you!"

I fully understand why this movie is known for being “weird,” but I hope that more people will give it further credit with TADC’s success. I grew up with a copy of this on VHS that my grandmother gave me, and it’s such a nostalgic and treasured part of my childhood (even though I remember being genuinely terrified by it, lmao). It’s a great piece of animation and I hope people will start valuing that more!
I did this restoration of this film, as well as the previous 2009 restoration. It was not available in widescreen prior to that. I also spent about 25 years restoring Richard Williams' other film The Thief and the Cobbler.
I liked this movie a lot more than I thought I would. I loved the heart felt moment between Raggedy Ann and Andy. The bond of family and the kindness that they can show for eachother, is a powerful one. / u \
The Greedy always freaked me out as a kid. Not 'cause he was a scary monster, it was the horror of the kind of _existence_ he had...he was an intelligent, sentient being, trapped completely alone in some black pit in the wilderness-with no known history or backstory, perhaps even to himself. Without beginning and without ending-his very physical form never even the same from one moment to the next, and driven by a ravenous, unending sense of _hunger_ which he can only even try to sate, in futility, by consuming the only the thing in his entire world...himself. Death doesn't seem to offer any hope of release. Or even the mercy of going insane. I could hardly imagine a worse form of Hell. What does a being have to _do_ to _deserve_ that kind of existence? Or, even worse, did he not do anything at _all_ to "earn" his place in Gehenna-a creature begotten for the sole purpose of occupying a place of eternal torment. P.S.: That one episode of "Bump in the Night" was existentially bizarre, too.
This movie hit incredibly hard, my baby sister passed away last year in June and it just... it made me feel I needed to do more and hold her closer in my life instead of pushing her away half her life. She was only 26. I should have been mote like Andy and she would still be here. Great movie.

Gooseworx has actually said herself that Ragatha takes direct inspiration from Ragedy Ann (specifically her version seen here) and even Jax (at least his voice) takes inspiration from Andy here !!!! Its how Michael Kovach got casted in the first place (he was requested to do an impression of him) The scene in the second episode of TADC with the Fudge Monster is also a reference to this movie where you can see Ragatha saying similar lines to Anne from a scene in the movie as well as the Fudge being a reference to the Greedy,, theres many other references scattered throughout the series so far as Goose has stated that this is one of her fave movies and she loves to sneak those easter eggs into her show :D

I think it's funny that I like Andy, but I dont like Jax. He's my least favorite character. Unlike Jax, Andy may say rude things or be sassy, but his actions speak kindness. It's like how he calls the camel crazy but still helps him and even shows sympathy for the guy. I assume Jax will have some sort of growth but still.

This trippy imagery in this film made me remember the animated film GAY PURR-EE. I rewatched it a few years ago recently, and I had no idea just how DARK that film was. Cat prostitution, attempted suicide…heavy stuff. I’d love to see you two react to that film one day.
Funny you bring that up, because it's director was originally chosen to direct this film with Richard Williams supervising animation. He died before production began though, so Williams had to take over.
That sequence in black and white always struck me as Richard Williams giving a nod to Winsor McCay's Little Nemo, there was a lot of old strips where Nemo was dreaming about sliding down an endless bannister.

I've never seen this movie before. It was such a treat! I can see where TADC got a lot of inspiration in not just designs but themes. I'm curious how many other projects were directly inspired by this as opposed to coincidence. It's so charming and a wonderful work of art.

This makes me wonder where the line is between good cute and bad cute… this movie is filled with moments of whimsy and themes of love, but so is A Troll in Central Park. Yet this is legitimately precious and that is vomit-inducing. So what’s the cuteness threshold? How do you properly write adorable, lighthearted characters and stories?
It's hard to say. Adorable and lighthearted characters tend to be very hit or miss with people. But for me, the thing that sets this movie apart from A Troll in Central Park is it's tone. Sure, there's plenty of warm fuzzies here and there, but there's also legitimate tension and drama I can take seriously. A Troll in Central Park has the troll Queen, who loves to sing about how much she loves being evil, and how much she hates pretty things. Yet, not much happens. The Queen doesn't actually invade the city until the tail end of the movie. Most of the time in between is dedicated to flowers dancing while Gus and Rosie fight in the background. Meanwhile, in this movie, we have a villain that constantly eats himself due to never being satisfied. Crazier still, he tries to rip out Ann's heart so he can eat it! Like Saber said, the classic fairytale vibe carries it a lot. The world is just as enchanting as it is sinister.

It’s a trippy Toy Story based movie about two raggedy dolls doing this kind of Disney musical style adventuring outside of the house saving a French doll from a pirate. The story is all the place but however I loved the animation even the music. Some sequences of live action wasn’t necessarily great because of the budget constraints during filming. I loved Richard Williams making great things even Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I loved your stream watchings. Keep it up. 😊
If my stories get animated, I'd love them to be animated in a style familiar to this movie. Not so much the acid-trip animation, unless the characters have a nightmare or something. But to have that simple scratchy detail of ink and color, the focus on voices for voices not marketing, the musical sequences being simple when they need to be simple, or big when they need to be big. All in all leaving a feeling of adventure or gingerbreaded nostalgia that could put a peppy step back in anyone who viewed it.
I’m sad I didn’t watch this as a kid. This is beautiful. Extremely well animated with pretty colors. Charming characters. Cute songs. A good (even if slightly unhinged) story. I love it! 😊
Circling back to their firdt comment on the death of voice acting in hollywood, I really lvoe the opening credits. Instead of the voice actors being credited first, the animators are credited. And I argue it is just as worthwhile for the animators to get their fame and recognition and praise as the voice actors. This movie has such a sweetheart spot in my heart. Fr.
This reminds me of how Del Toro's Pinocchio credited the entire animation team in the end titles before any of the celebrity voice actors. That's 7 lead animators, 16 senior animators, and 34 other animators.
Yeah, the problem with the “Cobbler and the Thief” was Richard Williams was a hyper perfectionist (probably ADHD) and kept missing deadlines and studios and producers kept dropping the project, until we got the hackney Disney knock-off nearly 30 years after the start of the original project.

This is one of my earliest favorite movies and is still #12 on my Top 20. It's definitely not for everyone, but the visuals and the music are still some of the best I've seen.

A fun fact...Anabelle, the original doll WAS a ragdoll not a french/porcelain doll. They changed that for the movies bc people generally find them creepier, and it's easier to believe that doll is evil. But I feel like, having a cute innocent ragdoll would, in that movie, fit the situation better. Because people would be charmed by the doll and it'd be less "wtf, this is an obviously evil doll, how stupid are these people?". I also kind of LIKE the porcalain dolls, I don't really find them THAT creepy, esp the ones that are in good condition. I remember there was this one magazine that had minature porcelain dolls with hair and cute victorian clothing. and you could collect them. and they had accessories such as beds and stuff. I remember having one or two but they broke.

There was actually supposed to be a live action/CGI Raggedy Ann movie, it was announced around 2012 (or earlier) and the previous puppeteer of Elmo (Kevin Clash) was supposed to direct. I believe that it either fell into development hell or it was canceled (which is probably more likely considering no news about it came out after that)
Fun fact: in the 1940's or 1930's the first animated short for Raggy Ann and Andy, added to the confusion of their relationship. The writers/production studio didn't read the source material/book series. So they didn't know they are brother and Sister. The plot was "accidental incest."

I feel like surrealism kinda shortcuts the biggest challenge of animation, because every mistake or lack of consistency just becomes part of the vibe
One reason why I’m a fan of off-model animation, or even better, switching between and merging off-model and on-model! Off-model animation can be great for surrealism, or whimsy, or even certain characters, like if it’s meant to be exaggerated like this movie or a show like Ren and Stimpy, if it’s meant to evoke a certain aesthetic or art style like mushy clay, children’s drawings, or a dream sequence, or something completely different!
It's why stylized media ages better than any 'realistic' animation, it can maintain the suspension of disbelief so much easier because we innately know to disregard such inconsistencies with conventional expectations.
Camel started out looking like he was having a bad trip, when all along he was just dissociating... Damn.

While Raggedy Anne may not be the oldest Rag doll (being arguably one of the oldest known types of toys in human history), she was definitely the most influential going forward in terms of style with the red yarn hair, patchwork dress, and character personality to affect things like the doll from Bump in the Night and The Amazing Digital Circus, and so many modern dolls. It is funny to think THIS is also what Annabelle really was, and seeing the real one in its case is hilarious, I honestly can't watch those movies without picturing the large floppy doll in place of the overly ugly porcelain one they made for the movies.
Also pretty sure The Greedy inspired the Fudge in episode 2 of the Amazing Digital Circus, if not there is one other less appealing candidate for that inspiration.

So here's a fun fact. Not only was Joe Raposo the main songwriter for _Sesame Street_ for a long time, he was also brought in to do music for _Shining Time Station_ (the show created to provide a vessel for the _Thomas the Tank Engine_ shorts in the US, which also featured Raggedy Ann's voice actor Didi Conn as stationmaster Stacy Jones). One of the recurring segments on that show was a character using the station arcade's nickelodeon, which would cut to a music video made out of an original song and public domain footage. Anyway, in one episode, THE SONG WAS A COVER OF "HOME" FROM THIS MOVIE. It was even prefaced by a character half-recalling the song, as if the writers were acknowledging that it came from somewhere else.

Very true, but I still find the similarities between this and Toy Story funny.
The director of Toy Story got the idea from working on Brave Little Toaster in the 80s, so if anything Toy Story copies that, just in a way less depressing way.

There have been cartoons about toys coming to life since at least the 1930's, and stories about toys coming to life since at least the early 1800's (such as "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" from 1838 and "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" from 1816).
It's just a fun, whimsical idea that has been around for a VERY long time :)
Muppet/ Sesame Street veteran Joe Raposo wrote the songs/score for Raggedy Ann and Andy, while it's not his best work it does attract a small audience and works to the film's presence

I fully understand why this movie is known for being “weird,” but I hope that more people will give it further credit with TADC’s success. I grew up with a copy of this on VHS that my grandmother gave me, and it’s such a nostalgic and treasured part of my childhood (even though I remember being genuinely terrified by it, lmao). It’s a great piece of animation and I hope people will start valuing that more!
I love Raggedy Andy's songs, his voice is so soothing, and he's a great brother! Also the animation for this movie is INCREDIBLE
I did this restoration of this film, as well as the previous 2009 restoration. It was not available in widescreen prior to that. I also spent about 25 years restoring Richard Williams' other film The Thief and the Cobbler.
I liked this movie a lot more than I thought I would. I loved the heart felt moment between Raggedy Ann and Andy. The bond of family and the kindness that they can show for eachother, is a powerful one. / u \
The Greedy always freaked me out as a kid.
Not 'cause he was a scary monster, it was the horror of the kind of _existence_ he had...he was an intelligent, sentient being, trapped completely alone in some black pit in the wilderness-with no known history or backstory, perhaps even to himself. Without beginning and without ending-his very physical form never even the same from one moment to the next, and driven by a ravenous, unending sense of _hunger_ which he can only even try to sate, in futility, by consuming the only the thing in his entire world...himself.
Death doesn't seem to offer any hope of release. Or even the mercy of going insane. I could hardly imagine a worse form of Hell.
What does a being have to _do_ to _deserve_ that kind of existence? Or, even worse, did he not do anything at _all_ to "earn" his place in Gehenna-a creature begotten for the sole purpose of occupying a place of eternal torment.
P.S.: That one episode of "Bump in the Night" was existentially bizarre, too.

This movie hit incredibly hard, my baby sister passed away last year in June and it just... it made me feel I needed to do more and hold her closer in my life instead of pushing her away half her life. She was only 26. I should have been mote like Andy and she would still be here. Great movie.

Gooseworx has actually said herself that Ragatha takes direct inspiration from Ragedy Ann (specifically her version seen here) and even Jax (at least his voice) takes inspiration from Andy here !!!! Its how Michael Kovach got casted in the first place (he was requested to do an impression of him) The scene in the second episode of TADC with the Fudge Monster is also a reference to this movie where you can see Ragatha saying similar lines to Anne from a scene in the movie as well as the Fudge being a reference to the Greedy,, theres many other references scattered throughout the series so far as Goose has stated that this is one of her fave movies and she loves to sneak those easter eggs into her show :D

This trippy imagery in this film made me remember the animated film GAY PURR-EE. I rewatched it a few years ago recently, and I had no idea just how DARK that film was. Cat prostitution, attempted suicide…heavy stuff. I’d love to see you two react to that film one day.
Funny you bring that up, because it's director was originally chosen to direct this film with Richard Williams supervising animation. He died before production began though, so Williams had to take over.
That sequence in black and white always struck me as Richard Williams giving a nod to Winsor McCay's Little Nemo, there was a lot of old strips where Nemo was dreaming about sliding down an endless bannister.
The French pronounce Paris with a silent "s" so yeah, Babette is actually saying it accurately. Just like how Mexicans pronounce Mexico with the "x" sounding like an "h" syllable.

This makes me wonder where the line is between good cute and bad cute… this movie is filled with moments of whimsy and themes of love, but so is A Troll in Central Park. Yet this is legitimately precious and that is vomit-inducing. So what’s the cuteness threshold? How do you properly write adorable, lighthearted characters and stories?
It's hard to say. Adorable and lighthearted characters tend to be very hit or miss with people. But for me, the thing that sets this movie apart from A Troll in Central Park is it's tone. Sure, there's plenty of warm fuzzies here and there, but there's also legitimate tension and drama I can take seriously. A Troll in Central Park has the troll Queen, who loves to sing about how much she loves being evil, and how much she hates pretty things. Yet, not much happens. The Queen doesn't actually invade the city until the tail end of the movie. Most of the time in between is dedicated to flowers dancing while Gus and Rosie fight in the background. Meanwhile, in this movie, we have a villain that constantly eats himself due to never being satisfied. Crazier still, he tries to rip out Ann's heart so he can eat it! Like Saber said, the classic fairytale vibe carries it a lot. The world is just as enchanting as it is sinister.
This movie. Made me cry. So much.

It’s a trippy Toy Story based movie about two raggedy dolls doing this kind of Disney musical style adventuring outside of the house saving a French doll from a pirate. The story is all the place but however I loved the animation even the music. Some sequences of live action wasn’t necessarily great because of the budget constraints during filming. I loved Richard Williams making great things even Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I loved your stream watchings. Keep it up. 😊
If my stories get animated, I'd love them to be animated in a style familiar to this movie.
Not so much the acid-trip animation, unless the characters have a nightmare or something.
But to have that simple scratchy detail of ink and color, the focus on voices for voices not marketing, the musical sequences being simple when they need to be simple, or big when they need to be big.
All in all leaving a feeling of adventure or gingerbreaded nostalgia that could put a peppy step back in anyone who viewed it.

Circling back to their firdt comment on the death of voice acting in hollywood, I really lvoe the opening credits. Instead of the voice actors being credited first, the animators are credited. And I argue it is just as worthwhile for the animators to get their fame and recognition and praise as the voice actors. This movie has such a sweetheart spot in my heart. Fr.
This reminds me of how Del Toro's Pinocchio credited the entire animation team in the end titles before any of the celebrity voice actors. That's 7 lead animators, 16 senior animators, and 34 other animators.

Yeah, the problem with the “Cobbler and the Thief” was Richard Williams was a hyper perfectionist (probably ADHD) and kept missing deadlines and studios and producers kept dropping the project, until we got the hackney Disney knock-off nearly 30 years after the start of the original project.

This is one of my earliest favorite movies and is still #12 on my Top 20. It's definitely not for everyone, but the visuals and the music are still some of the best I've seen.

A fun fact...Anabelle, the original doll WAS a ragdoll not a french/porcelain doll. They changed that for the movies bc people generally find them creepier, and it's easier to believe that doll is evil. But I feel like, having a cute innocent ragdoll would, in that movie, fit the situation better. Because people would be charmed by the doll and it'd be less "wtf, this is an obviously evil doll, how stupid are these people?". I also kind of LIKE the porcalain dolls, I don't really find them THAT creepy, esp the ones that are in good condition. I remember there was this one magazine that had minature porcelain dolls with hair and cute victorian clothing. and you could collect them. and they had accessories such as beds and stuff. I remember having one or two but they broke.

There was actually supposed to be a live action/CGI Raggedy Ann movie, it was announced around 2012 (or earlier) and the previous puppeteer of Elmo (Kevin Clash) was supposed to direct. I believe that it either fell into development hell or it was canceled (which is probably more likely considering no news about it came out after that)

Fun fact: in the 1940's or 1930's the first animated short for Raggy Ann and Andy, added to the confusion of their relationship. The writers/production studio didn't read the source material/book series. So they didn't know they are brother and Sister. The plot was "accidental incest."
