When asked the question - "Why do Scots play the bagpipes on the way into battle?" the reply normally given "so the enemy knows who is coming and how long they have left to live...!"
I'm an American and I just never get tired of watching these vids of the Scots. I served in the US Army 30+ years ago. After I returned to West Germany (yeah, it's been THAT long!) from Desert Storm, I was marching in damn near every parade just because I had that combat patch. I even marched with the Bundeswehr (West German Army) on a few occasions. But I'd have loved to march with the Scots! Just to hear the pipes and drums!
When its your first time in Scotland you're not prepared how Edinburgh blows you away, driving through the little villages stunning. In the city. OMG just beautiful. It was very weird as soon as you see the welcome to Scotland sign. It was a massive syi of being home. , Scotland you are the best, proud to be Scottish decendant . Awe the mascot just gorgeous, those bagpipes get me everytime... amazing.
I am in the Normandy plain following the route of my Dad with the 51st Highland Division into Germany. Listening the pipes and drums back home feels so right on this anniversary of D Day. Thank you for posting
I'm American, and I love to listen to these musicians play. The bagpipes are the hardest instrument to play. These people start playing from small children to adults, which is wonderful. When I need an uplift, I come here and watch these Bagpipe RUclips videos.
PIPE DRUMS IS IN OUR BLOOD,PIPE DRUMS IS CENTURIES OF LOVED FAMILY. Try NOT Listening for a week or So. Then Start Up PIPE DRUMS AND BE RENEWED LIKE NEVER BEFORE.NO SOUND COMES ANYWHERE CLOSE TO OUR PIPE DRUMS.GOD BLESS
Astounding! Jim this is your best video yet! What would the British Army be without the Scots? The tunes are extraordinary. How about a playlist when you have the time!
@@gtuneit Well as a Yank who knows nothing at all about British culture perhaps could YOU tell me the tunes (same or not) that Jim captured. It would be much appreciated. I have no shame in asking this but I was very impressed with such a uniquely British experience. I found it fabulous!
J 'adore regarder et surtout écouter cette parade ça m'hypnotise et on voit que les Anglais sont fiers de leur coutumes, j'aimerais tellement aller visiter ce beau pays un jour !❤
It would have been nice to see subtitles of the tunes the pipers played while they marched. Bloody marvellous, though! So marvellous ! [EDIT] And different regiments were involved too, weren't they? Names? Please, respect!
I love Scotland and I hope to visit it again! Several years ago I was at Paisley where a chemical facility owned by Ciba to learn how pigments were made
Nice vid. I sometimes wonder, as a musician myself who can't even read music, why the bagpipers don't need a sheet in front of their nose with the music on it, but some of the 'brass' players do.
Melissa saggers August is the best time to see the massed PIPES&DRUMS EDINBURGH MILITARY TATTOO..Summer highland games runs may to August, one of the biggest is the Cowal games. Enjoy BONNIE SCOTLAND 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
I LOOVVVVEEEEE how they went from a quick march at 0:37 to a slow march at 0:42 I know not If They Walked Thru a Portal lol or was that a moment I am high But did anyone else peep that
What clan tartan is worn that is blue and green? Clan Graham of Montrose asking, it resembles ours. Great parade. Makes getting over c19 not quite as bad. Thanks from NH USA 🇺🇸!
It’s official Name is Government A1 Tartan, initially worn by the Black Watch Regiment then later adopted as the official tartan of the Royal Regiment of Scotland
Pipe bands come in all different sizes. There is something for everyone. Piping takes a lot of effort and is a huge time commitment, but learning how to play them is worth both the effort and the time. High level competition bands have become larger over the years, in order to produce the sound that they want. It is an enormous feat for them to be able to sound like one large bagpipe. The notes and embellishments must be executed at exactly the same time through a set of several tunes. It is a capricious instrument that requires constant maintenance, but is so rewarding to be able to play. You and Robert do have a point, though. The number of pipe bands and Highland Games have dwindled over the years, at least where I live. The piping community is a dedicated one, though, so while it might be going through a lean period, I doubt that its light will be extinguished. This is a lovely video!
Congratulations to all the people watching this march who chose to record the experience on their smartphones rather than applaud and show appreciation to these guys... If I myself were marching through a town I'd hope that everyone was just looking at their phones and not actually recognising our effort. That would make me so damn happy...I love to see people living their shitty lives through social media rather than reality. What in the name name of Christ is wrong with you people? You all deserve a thump in the head to wake up.....
The Royal Navy band do not come to edinburgh for the opening of the scottish parliament so would not be in this video.. Usually it is mainly scottish regiment bands playing

I just watched a particularly dumb debate with an incredibly dishonest science denier. My brain is fritzing, and I desperately need a pick me up. Give me those dulcet tones of pipes & drums band! It's million times better than listening to pointless drone of an old grifter.

I'm a South London boy but the bagpipes put a shiver down my spine great sound
I love the swagger with which the Scottish soldiers march. Gives off such an air of confidence
That's because we are confident in our abilities and we know how good we look in our no1s

I walked that mile once so it has some strong memories for me. There were no pipers that day though. Thanks. LK. From Canada ❤❤❤😊

Thanks a lot for this video, I like to much scottish pipe . I'm Italian but I was in Scotland at 18en years old
Love it mate
The British do seem to stand on their traditions. Here in America it seems to be fire trucks that are always on parade.
I love the pipe and brass band sound!

Where are you from kind sir?
The US of A my friend.
i remember being young an marching in parades in full dress military uniform.
Wow. Going soon and can't wait. I wonder when this was filmed.
2018 for some of it
@@JimRamsayJWR I assume in August? I was surprised at the heavier jackets.
Nice vid. I sometimes wonder, as a musician myself who can't even read music, why the bagpipers don't need a sheet in front of their nose with the music on it, but some of the 'brass' players do.
Well historically there is no sheet music for the pipes its was handed down through the teachings a more skillful manner if you will
I was in a marching band and we memorized our music. I think musicians that cannot are phoning it in. I did it, so can they!
I used to play the bagpipe. Your fingers memorize it. You don't have to think about it.❤
How often does this happen? Would love to see it when we visit last half of September 2023.

That would be the black watch tartan worn by the soldiers, the pipers are wearing the royal Stewart or Cameron depending on the battalion.
It’s official Name is Government A1 Tartan, initially worn by the Black Watch Regiment then later adopted as the official tartan of the Royal Regiment of Scotland
Black Watch!
No.1A sett is a modern lightened version of the No.1 sett that the "Black Watch" (and other regiments) wore.

Badass
Is it my imagination or are the pipe bands getting smaller and smaller.
Yes they are. Fewer boys and even few girls want to learn the pipes these days. Takes too much effort

If the Scottish Parliament decreed the a War with Scotland existed with other events, these battles may of ended that War.
So sad watching everyone recording it on their phones, I think it would ruin the experience for me.
