I watched this video years ago and thought it was amazing, I've kept it in the back of my mind for it such an occasion called for it. Well finally my husband got fed up with the premade crumpets going mouldy, no matter how they are stored, open or not, within 24 hours of being purchased. So I am going to make these finally! Thank you so much for your channel, I keep coming back to old videos and love all the new ones. You are an inspiration to me. I love the frugality, the creativity and I love watching you with your kids and husband, very much like my own family.
Hey that's awesome to hear! Comments like this keep me going 😊 always glad to be of help ... and doing these videos means I keep coming up with ideas so win-win for our family too lol!
Thanks for this, my daughter has just discovered the joys of crumpets but I'm not keen on spending that sort of money so this is perfect. I'm so glad I found your channel.
Fantastic video. I was looking for a way to bake crumpets in the oven, and this worked very well indeed. My trays are rubbish, but a bit of baking paper did the trick. The reason for making crumpets? I had a heap of "sourdough starter discard" that I wanted to use up. The starter makes a good rise, and the baking powder makes the bubbles. Totally agree that cooking crumpets in a pan takes FOREVER! Thanks again for the great video. Now... 100 biscuits? Maybe next!
Awesome thanks for the feedback! This was the first video I did a couple of years ago so video quality maybe not that great but I still make these regularly and the family love them! 😊
Again, loved this video! I just discovered your channel. Me and my family are moving over to NZ in a couple of weeks and i can't wait to try some of your tips and tricks!
Hi, Geroge Pierce by way of your Facebook comment, thank you. This video is a pleasure to watch and your views prove it. More keywords in your description might help your videos rank even more and a 'hook' on your thumbnail such as your tractor vid might get more CTR. BTW, beautiful kids and so well behaved, so include them as much as you can. Thanks for a great video, I enjoyed. I do not want to forget to compliment you on your quality content. Well done.
A group here has tried the grow and self mill some older variety wheats but the time and effort involved out weighs the benifits. We can buy organic wheat very cheaply to mill but have found we still need to bring in some white flour to produce good bread.
No I have tried round ones but never made a video on them ... they were just so time-consuming to make a small amount at once and I got too impatient lol!
This is awesome, I've always wanted to make my own crumpets. I had some 'homemade' ones at a cafe once and they were so amazing. Just wondering where you bought your amazing mixing bowls from?? 💜
Yeah as I say these aren't exactly like store bought, but they make a yummy breakfast! The bowls they used to have at the Warehouse but after one of mine broke I couldn't find them there anymore - I've since got a replacement from Stevens - so handy so have a massive bowl on hand!
Hi I"m on a block in Cust and to cut cost I get spray free flour and yeast from Farmers Mill in Timaru. Good stuff and can be picked up locally. For more on that drop a note with your contact to Box 91. Awesome way to do crumpets!!!
Great tip thanks - we're actually working on growing our own wheat to make flour at the moment (have already done a video on "part 1" - fingers crossed it works out!)
I don't see why not - I've actually started making them with the whey left over from making greek yoghurt instead of milk and that works really well, I imagine almond milk would be a bit watery like that (just guessing I'm not sure!), but would be interesting to try!
Just what seems to work for this recipe - and yes I use about one tablespoon for a loaf of bread too 🙂 ... we did a lot of playing with this recipe but if you find less still works well then great (probably depends on the type of yeast / room temperature etc too)
Yeah sometimes they can be temperamental - maybe if the room isn't quite warm enough or they don't rise as much they end up without as many bubbles, it was a bit of trial & error for us (although still nice enough!).
@@CheaperWaysNZ Thanks. I've just had two, and even after nearly 15 minutes in a 150 degree C oven last night, then toasting, they didn't seem quite done.
@@markchapman6800 Oh bummer - yeah as I say it was trial & error for us and we altered it quite a lot from the original recipe we were given - I wonder if your oven needs to be hotter maybe?
@@CheaperWaysNZ I thought that my oven's temp is a bit low, so gave it an extra 10 degrees anyway, but I'll make a note that even that wasn't enough. I've just given the remaining ones a once-over in a hotter oven, and I'll see tomorrow how that went (I've had enough for today :-) Thanks.

@@markchapman6800 same problem. On 150 degs, after 12 mins my batter was still liquid. So I then upped the oven to 170 degs and had it in there for 20 mins - it eventually set, but was totally pale and the surface had sealed over without popping. I think next time I will do it at 180 from the start, or even 200. Also, looking at the video the baking tray seems right down low, very close to the heating element of the oven bottom.
Ah ok ... that's where it's a bit variable! I put in 6 cups initially and then do the mix ... then I usually find it needsa around one more cup to make it the right consistency (hence why this is a hard recipe to write down!) ... I always find it mixes easier if I just start with six and when it's a smooth consistency I add more until it's the right texture 🙂
haha - well I think the definition alters depending on what country you're in - here in NZ they're usually very light, airy things (wow great description - lol), with holes in them, often served with butter and/or treacle/golden syrup. I think in America they might have a different name or crumpets might be considered something different … but rest assured whatever you call the thingies I make in this video they're great - lol
As I said - they're more a hybrid between crumpets and english muffins ... I've thought about re-naming them cruffins or something but I think that might already be a thing - lol - they're yummy regardless!
I’ve just discovered this crumpet recipe and am definitely going to try it. I’m a bit bewildered that there was no sugar to activate the yeast though, I didn’t realise yeast could work without any. You learn something new everyday. Absolutely love your down to earth videos. Thanks for sharing. ❤

Oh great thanks! Let me know how you get on … it took us quite a bit of trial & error but find these are a lot more filling than store bought :)
Nice recipe and great that you're offering tips to save. Thank you.
Thanks! The kids enjoy making these videos too so that's a bonus :)
They look fabulous and Im going to give these a go! Many thanks
Took a bit of trial & error for us, let me know how you got on!
I'm really impressed, I like cooking for the freezer, so will definitely be trying this...
Awesome hopefully they turn out good - they're quite the staple at our place now 😀
These look so yummy and easy , definitely going to try these tomorrow , thanks for posting
Yay hope you like them - as I say they're not like store-bought but so much more filling!
Found it thanks going to try these
This was super cool. I'm discovering your back catalogue.
haha yes the video that started it all - thought I was going to run out of ideas after the first few vids - wrong! lol
I make these in the pie maker but the way you do them is awsome ☺
Thanks! It was a lot of trial & error - lol
Thanks for sharing Sarah, going to have a go making them :)

I will gives these a try upon our return to New Zealand. Thank you for sharing. New Sub..

Yum, these look so easy! Did I dream it or did you also make a video on the round style crumpets? Searched through the archives but didn't spot it.

Hi Sarah what yeast did you use?
I just use the same Breadmakers Yeast that I use for bread etc
I don't have a hand mixer can I mix by hand with a spoon orcwhisk
You can do, but it does need a LOT of mixing, so I wouldn't recommend trying it without either a hand mixer or a stand mixer
You are good mom
Thanks! 😊
I love crompets
Us too they're very popular here!
hi my children have severe allergies do you think this will work with almond milk?
I don't see why not - I've actually started making them with the whey left over from making greek yoghurt instead of milk and that works really well, I imagine almond milk would be a bit watery like that (just guessing I'm not sure!), but would be interesting to try!
You can make them with 100% warm water if you want to.
Waoooooo good Wark 💖💖💖💖👌😍😋😋
Thank you 😋

That's a lot of yeast? When I make bread, it's about that many teaspoons, not tablespoons?

I tried this last night, and didn't seem to get as many holes as even you did. The bubbles sealed off rather than popping.
