    We managed to get a decent amount to cover over the beds this year. We have two square plastic bins which we transfer from one to the other. I was really happy with the amount we got out of one for the allotment

      Thank you very much for your message Sharon. It’s surprising how much compost you can make and it’s great when we start to use it. Not only is it free it is also full of lovely nutrients which are perfect for the veg. It sounds like you are doing great with the compost making! Kind regards. Gary

    Great video Gary, so glad to see your videos continuing. I get about 8 barrow loads of compost each mid spring from just veg waste, cardboard waste, chicken house cleaning, and weeds. Covering the heap with black plastic and bricks to weight it down. I turn it about twice to three times during the summer, water it, add to it and re cover it. I’m not sure if I can better the method, I’m not able to move pallets or anything heavy so I rely on the wall at back and heap it up to 3ft high along about 8ft of wall.it gets full sun all afternoon and evening. I’d like to get more made but run out of stuff to mix with it😂😂 I do love to see the change from scrap stuff to rich compost…part of the pleasure of gardening. Well done with the videos, must be hard work. Much appreciated though.

      It sounds like you have a great system for making compost which works really well so I would keep doing it. It is great when all of that waste turns into fertile compost! Kind regards. Gary

    One commonly composted item which screams out for being mixed with a high carbon material is grass clippings.
    I add 25% by volume of shredded cardboard to grass clippings, which stops them turning into green slime.

      Hi Helen and thank you for your comment. The plastic compost bins will be ok but it does take time for the compost to decompose. I prefer the wooden pallets as this is larger and allows air in more readily. Kind regard. Gary

    I have used a plastic @darlec@ compost bin for years but have never made much compost and I think they look awful. May be this year or next I am gonna build a 3 compost bay from wood and see if that is any better. As I have just gone no dig my husband is already complaining about the amount and cost of compost

    • @TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen
      @TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen  Год назад +1

      Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, if you go no dig and don’t make your own compost it can get very expensive. Three bays is what I used on my allotment and you can make a lot with that, so definitely give it a go! Kind regards. Gary

    Any suggestions on the best multi compost to use. Peat free is awful but living in England we don't have the choice, for those who can't make their own. Thanks. Great video, as always.

      A lot of people are not impressed with much of the peat free compost they have tried and from 2024 the sale of peat based compost will be banned. At present in my opinion one of the best available multipurpose composts is Clover, which is peat based so that will also be disappearing in 2024 unless that come up with a peat free version. Kind regards. Gary

    • @harrybrown3657
      @harrybrown3657 Год назад +2

      Agreed.. The peat free composts that I've tried have all been expensive and containing a lot of sticks and other rubbish. So now, I'm just buying the cheapest from Lydl. It's no better or worse than more expensive offerings. I make my own too, but I'm reluctant to use it for seed germination due to the possibility of the odd small slug that might be hidden. Using Lydl's multi purpose this Feb, I've successfully germinated B'sprouts, greyhound cabbage, tomatoes, leeks etc..(all under cover for now) Best to sieve it first ☺

    • @TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen
      @TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen  Год назад +2

      @@harrybrown3657 thank you very much for your response Harry. You make some good points about peat free and I think also emphasise that the quality of what is available at the moment is not the best. Hopefully there will be improvements moving forward at that is the only option we will have to buy after 2024. I sieve my own homemade compost and that works well for the mid to large size seeds. Kind regards. Gary

    I don't think going 'no dig' is viable unless you're producing your own compost.
    I use over 3 cubic metres of compost annually for a 12m x 4m back garden & 13m x 6m 'mini allotment', including a 1.8x2.4m greenhouse & 3m x 6m polytunnel.
    That's not 3m³ when the bin's full, it's 3m³ of 9-12 month old compost & to produce that much needs a LOT of material.
