We call them burner phones. They are supposed to be cheap. You use it for whatever you need and get rid of it to never use again. Usually phones like this are used to commit a crime or some illegal activity. That can be anything from making a phonecall to even avoiding taxes, avoiding being traced.
Yea dumb phones are probably more difficult to obtain right now then they've ever been. If you're in the USA your options pretty much only consist of the Alcatel Go Flip; from what I've researched every carrier will have 3g and 2g dropped by the end of 2019 and the 8110 simply does not work on our towers. The light(phone) at the end of the tunnel is that the 3110 and 8110 obviously have a following and any quick google search will reveal there is a demand for 4g dumb phones that is not being met. Yeah, I live in the boonies in France, and we'll prolly have 2G for another 10 years. We were one of the last areas to get 4G, so I know we won't get 5G until 2087, probably... Still, I'd love to have a 4G dumbphone. Just withOUT Google... GRR.
Here in Macedonia 2G would be supported for many years to come too. I recently bought a very cheap Alcatel phone in a store in my city (that phone is no longer available in my country) for 21 euros. The model name is Alcatel 2002d. It's a 2.5 G phone, it only has GPRS, no EDGE. The best thing about this phone is it's huge 1800mAh battery. It lasted me 15 days on a single charge. If you want a phone for calling and texting and you find this phone, I strongly recommend it, especially for it's long lasting battery life.
David Söderberg here in Australia all of the cell phone companies has shut down the 2G networks. They have used the 1.8 GHz band that used to be for 2G and it’s now getting used for 4G and the same with the 2.1Ghz from 3G to 4G in some areas on some providers.
Hi! Here's my criteria: 2G, no camera, dual sim, nothing besides sms/calling. Cheap. 20-30€ maximum. That's for Europe. If you travel far away, just go to a kiosk and get some cheap card+phone =) I remember that video you did, good one and thank you for this follow up. All the best
I'm really sad about the potential discontinuation of 3G in the USA at some point. I've used import Japanese flip phones here for years and they don't have matching bands for 4G service. Hopefully I will be out of school and living in Japan by the time this happens so I can continue to use their beautifully designed water resistant/shockproof phones.
What I'm after is a phone that is like a CB radio in the sense that the transmitter is far away from the mic and speaker, the further the better. When I go out its like watching the invasion of the body snatchers, people everywhere are glued to their magnetron's like moths to a flame.
Don't have to choose - still using My Motorola dumb phone purchased 15 years ago, and I pay the huge sum of $10 a month to use it. Figure I saved at least $10,000 over the past 15 years, never experienced the frustrations of a smart phone, no one can track me, turn on my microphone or video without me knowing, and I use a real camera (Nikon D850) and not the rinky dink toy cameras found in even the best of cellphones (ie:I compared the fairly new Samsung S22 to my Nikon - no comparison at all...). And I know enough to shoot horizontal video, meaning no narrow stripe of video with black on both sides - unless you only look at the videos on a miniature screen like a cellphome.
From my understanding in the UK - they are doing away with 3G but are keeping 2G for legacy devices - why not the other way around I don't know but the example devices they give was home alarm systems and dog trackers etc :s'
My days are numberd with phones , no dumb phone , no phone at all .Those 5G LED sreetlamps ae already being instaled testing them now in the UK .They do come with health hazerds that are deniyed by these corparations and media silence. Is anyone else aware of this yet ?

Now here is an interesting alternative for the privacy focused that many seem to have forgotten, the blackberry classic. It has 4g capability, but runs bb10 and doesn't have any spyware on it. While it does support the amazon app store, you can easily ignore it if you so wish and use the device either as a dumb phone at it's most basic state, or snap up some of the bb10 application before black berry world (I think that's what the app store on it was called, but I'm not 100% sure) closes down and make it into a basic feature phone.

Solution: 4G dumbphone with an OS that doesn't spy on you and costs peanuts, that would be a used BB10 phone. It currently still has browsing capabilities and some functional apps but their smart functionality is dying pretty quick. But the phone and text functions will be around as long as 4G. Yet stillplenty of useful pre-internet functions like radio, flashlight, alarm, camera... The perfect disconnected phone.
@@DieselTrucker2018 That's exactly what I have (actually a Z30 on 10.3.3 to be precise). As a bonus I have to add, since turning off WiFi and data the thing runs for a week on the battery charged to 80% and run down to 20%, unless you use the phone/text a lot. Keeping the battery charge between 20 and 80 percent will help it last a long, long time.
It’s especially difficult if you’re living in a country where feature/dumb phones are absolutely not available and the government restricts anyone trying to buy devices abroad…
In the USA, I just bought a Nokia 6300 4G phone that I use with T-Mobile. It seems OK. I agree that it is difficult to find a basic phone that has good quality (reliable).
picked up the 3g nokia 3310. currently loving it. its day 3 and ive texted a LOT, browsed the web (tried), played snake a bit, made some calls, and still have yet to charge it. pretty cool. had the iphone 6SE which of course i loved but, between several games, and social media apps, i was just glued to it 24/7 and it was driving me crazy. a lot of anxiety when i have so many things to reply to and do the daily things on the games and whatnot. now ive gotten home, and breathed a sigh of relief knowing ive temporarly dropped it all. feels nice right now. cheers. and 50 bucks!!! cant beat that! slipped in my sim card (t mobile, US) and was off to the races.
Here is an idea. On my smartphone and guessing some other smartphones there is an option like "ultra stamina mode". (The name might change from brand to brand.) On this mode your phone kills every advenced smartphone application and google services to save power. So you're only left with calling, texting, clock/calendar, music, camera and pictures. At the end of the day you have a touch screen dumbphone with 4G and no google or other data copying apps.
Yes, indeed, Like how you have explained that around many different flavours. different providers and different countries. Hey Scottie, Nokia does sell a 4G version of the 3310. However, it's so rarely marketed and is only meant for the China. Runs on Yun OS. It's a very important phone that the global market never got 😒
It's really not easy. However in the country where I'm from, 2G is king along with the other bandwidths and tons of people still use 2G phones. I think it's a great idea to carry a dumbphone as your main call and text phone, and a smartphone for your entertainment needs (music, games, social media, movies, emails, Viber/WhatsApp/FB Messenger)
That's what I do. I still have a smartphone and tablet, but for daily phone + text needs, I use a dumbphone. Sometimes, it's handy to have the smartphone or tablet - like when traveling and you don't want to lug a laptop around!
Several Kyocera flips are 4g.. I have a Kyocera Cadence which is a super plain flipper and it's 4g--HOWEVER, I think it is run by the Android os. But one of their most popular is/are the Kyocera Dura xv and Dura xe, and I believe that ONE of those just runs on a proprietary Kyocera os.. and then the other runs on Android.. both 4g I believe.. Anyway, I've been researching 4g dumb phones for the past couple weeks, and I have found 5 or 6 of 'em.. Here are some: Kyocera Cadence Kyocera Dura xv/xe LG Exalt Alcatel Flip/Go Flip ZTE Cymbal Pantech Breeze
Hope this helps a little.. These things really ARE tough to find! I'd like to find a flip phone with: 1)4g 2)Push to Talk 3)a decent camera/camcorder 4)a decent display 5)wireless capability such as blue tooth (for music mainly) 6)long battery life (usually that's a given) 7)there was something else that's NOT coming to mind! The Kyocera Cadence does most of these and more, except PTT and the camera.. it takes horrible pictures, haha! [=
I am thinking of getting an old blackberry. Blackberry OS was known for its security and the Blackberry Bold 9900 is a 4g phone that has browser and email capabilities but on a 4g network. Do you think this is a good option Scottie?
Between these vids and the tribble and the feminist Alexa you have a new follower tonight! I dug my (3G) Nokia E71 out of the drawer last year & it's been running great (QWERTY keyboard!). Won't be supported forever but calls, SMS, MMS, all work great. 10 years ago was the most advanced phone on the market. Fortunately my provider (Mint Mobile in US) support team has been friendly & hasn't pushed me around about it either. My two cents to add, if you do go for a legacy phone, in the old days the advice was to always buy the OEM battery. But now that they aren't made any more, they're all counterfeit now, or past their shelf life, so buy third party so you have someone who's actually standing behind their brand name. I found a German company called Polarcell that works great. Also I have a feeling you would dig the "No Agenda" podcast. Just a hunch!
Kind of agree to your kaios critism. Have a cat b35 phone, after the latest OS upgrade, they added a "wonderful" easy-to-reach menu on left side of screen (kind of like the bottom menu in Apple OS). But there are only the "app store" and the google services, so it is completely useless (bloated). To reach most used functions such as alarm or sms, takes uncomfortable many key clicks.
I have a Nokia 8810 4G with KaiOS, and I'll be doing a vid on it soon. It's actually not too shabby. They don't even make you sign in to KaiOS or Google accounts by default. And the apps available are quite limited, so it isn't even close to a "full Android phone".
Having played about with the smartphones a bit here are tips for users who are forced to operate the thing: Disable the 4G, this can be turned back on if you need extra bandwidth momentarily but otherwise should not be used. Turn off the data, this can be toggled on to collect messages and emails as required but you should definately keep this turned off as the data packet seems to be more dangerous than the other signaling (except calls). It goes without saying you should have the NFC, WiFi and Bluetooth disabled. These tips are for those who are forced to use the device, those who are not should use aeroplane mode extensively especially EMF sensitives. EMF senstives should keep the phone a couple of inches from the body even in aeroplane mode as it may emit a small magnetic field which may cycle frequencies, I believe this is due to the CPU speedstepping and poor shielding.
@@DieselTrucker2018 If you were a person of special interest to the alphabet soup crew they can modify your phone to transmit in aeroplane, most of us are quite frankly not that interesting. You can confirm it is not transmitting with an EMF meter if you are the paranoid type. I spend plenty time on research dont you worry. If they want my data how am I supposed to stop them, they have all the hardware back doors in everything? Theres only so much you can do even if you are competent with technology.

I'm still using an LG Convoy 2 from 2012. I've been told by Verizon I will need to upgrade within the next couple of years because they will be doing away with 3G. It sucks.
This maybe a stupid question but. Does rooting a smart phone and then being able to switch off start on boot, tracking, ads and so on provide a bit of a solution? Any body know?
You'd still have to effectively block Google's "Play" services and prevent the phoning home... IOW, you'd have to know what you're doing. If you install CyanogenMod/LineageOS instead, but then install all of Google's services, you're not safer than before. As far as I know, anyway...
I had in the past Nokia 515 and I think it was one of the best "dumb phone" ever made. Great design, high quality sound, gorilla glass...Now I have Nokia 8110 and it is not "the same"...the software(KaiOS) has so many bugs that I am somehow disappointed...I heard it will repair in the near future with an update, but I just wait and wait...by the way, I love how Punkt mp02 phone looks....
I am considering this one. Built tough, and easy to use. First to learn if how long I can use it before the system won't accept it. I will purchase if I can replace the dying battery, which you cannot on Sealed ones. They are throwaway basically.
I have a landline, but my children, who are now adults, insist on texting and never call me on the landline, unless they can't reach me when I have my cell phone off. It annoys them though, when my cell is off. But they don't call me on it. they just keep texting. I have been on the cell phone so much lately, as I have four daughters, my eyes are begging for mercy. I just want to sleep and dream ...it's so much easier than being awake. I have so much more freedom in my dreams...
I haven’t herd about Telstra shutting down their 3G 850 MHz network. Telstra has been using the 850 MHz band since analog cell phone days. I have been using Telstra for years here in Australia. I’m going to ask some questions about the 3G 850 network. I’m using the 4G network 700 MHz, 1800 GHz, 2600 GHz network most of the time. I rearly use the 3G 850 much these days
I've had a Nokia 8110, basically an early adopter. It was so full of bugs and slow, and crappy battery that I gave up after 10 days and returned it to the seller. Now I'm using a Nokia 3310 dual sim 2G version (2017 model) and it's much more stable and the battery lasts a long time. The extra features of the 8110 were tempting but they were so poorly implemented that it didn't matter in the end. So now I have this Nokia as my main phone and my old iPhone 7 as a backup (I turn it on everyday basically just to check whatsapp). Oh, I live in Italy and the GSM network is still supported by most providers here. I would probably switch to something 4G in the future, maybe the 8110 again if they fixed all the bugs in the meantime, or maybe some 3310 4G model if they make one for Italy
The flavours that Scottie talks about, (for Australia): 2G: 900/1800. 3G: 900, 2100 MHz with 42Mbps data (HSPA+) . 4G: Band 3, Band 7, Band 28 with 150Mbps downlink.
I have been doing research on basic phones and found the Sonim XP5s. It is a dumb phone, very durable, water proof and long lasting battery. It also appears to support 4G networks. On Verizon(United States) it is $288, but since it is durable and has 4G, it could last you a long time. It is designed for those who work hard labor. Looking on the Verizon website, it appears as though smartphones have become cheaper than most basic phones. Trying to eliminate the distractions that the smart phone creates.
Darren Lomax If you cant make your server and client for that app, its not secure. Also whatsapp says its encrypted but do you really believe that? If something happens, the goverment have rights to read whatsapp messages. Whatsapp grants it.
All of the 2g, 3g mentions are regarding your data connection. Why does that matter when the point of a dumb phone is to disconnect? If your dumb phone has a cdma radio then it will work on a cdma network, if it's a GSM phone then it works on a GSM network. It's much easier than you are making it sound. If a phone doeant support 3g it will revert to whatever speed the radio supports but that's only a concern if you want to be online which goes against having a dumb phone to avoid tracking. Cdma phones work on cdma networks such as sprint and Verizon. GSM phones work with at&t, and t mobile and whatever other networks there are. If it's an unlocked phone it will work with any carrier that supports the type of phone you bought, cdma or GSM.
After several nights searching for a 4G feature phone with just voice, text, e-mail & and possibly but not necessarily a Camera I came to the same conclusion as you...It's hard to find one that's not lacking in some way. I was close to buying the Nokia 8110 but reviews of the OS put me off. I'm pretty disappointed that none of the smaller Chinese manufacturers have not jumped on the bandwagon. The only one I've seen who has is XIOMI with their QIN phone and up to yet seems they are not quite hitting the buttons for me either.
I walked through Best Buy a few weeks ago. On the entire floor there was ONE TV that was NOT a "smart TV" and it had the shittiest picture. Guess I'm stuck repairing my old TV for the rest of my life.
Many used cars have trackers mounted in them. New cars do too. So get an antique car. No computer! Get a GPS receive only, get an old receive only pager, access the internet through a VPN far from where you live. Now for this phone thing... Preferably none. Best bet would actually be a sip connection through Wi-Fi encrypted voice link only. People who call you should be equally paranoid. They need compatible encryption set up. Hopefully rubber hose Oracle decryption will not take place. A dark net message dead drop might be useful. You also need a flying saucer to commute back and forth to a civilized world. IIRC it was federally mandated in the US that every car 2014 or newer have a black box type system. Given real cost of new vehicles I frankly wonder why many buy new when all they are buying is a shitbox.

@@riverdeep399 I ordered it online through Tesco. I tapped Doro basic phone into a search engine and it is available everywhere.
Here in Sweden we still have GSM (2G) and its going to be supported for many years to come. Currently looking on auction sites for an old Nokia!
@@ScottiesTech what about a ubuntu mobile phone?
David Söderberg here in Australia all of the cell phone companies has shut down the 2G networks. They have used the 1.8 GHz band that used to be for 2G and it’s now getting used for 4G and the same with the 2.1Ghz from 3G to 4G in some areas on some providers.
@ David Söderberg Be Thankful!!
Yeah, the Japanese make some very cool phones. The first time I learned about them, I fell off my chair.
Got any models worth looking up I'm curious lol
Dude I’m more confused now than I was before watching this 😳🙄
What I'm after is a phone that is like a CB radio in the sense that the transmitter is far away from the mic and speaker, the further the better.
When I go out its like watching the invasion of the body snatchers, people everywhere are glued to their magnetron's like moths to a flame.
The CB is making a come-back and with 5G coming out... it WILL be back BIG TIME!! I already purchased a Uniden 980 SSB-
True that!!
In the UK 2G is likely to be with us until 2039. Much more likely to have 3G turned off sooner. Many rural areas only have 2G, older population, etc
Screw it, I'll just use my social skills
Where can i pick up some of those?
What phone do you use now? Since the towers now changed?
From my understanding in the UK - they are doing away with 3G but are keeping 2G for legacy devices - why not the other way around I don't know but the example devices they give was home alarm systems and dog trackers etc :s'
In Norway 3G are gone in 2019. And 2G are still ok because so much components is using 2G.

What about the Z30 smart phone? It runs BB10.3.1

Yeah, so far I'm loving the long battery life of the 3310.
I think I got that greenie yellow dumb phone you have on your workbench...from earlier. still got it hanging around the home somewhere...This has been very helpful again. Thank you Scottie.
@@ScottiesTech awesome. Here in my country prepaid is king, so some of us don't have to pay for data plans!
Here are some:
Kyocera Cadence
Kyocera Dura xv/xe
LG Exalt
Alcatel Flip/Go Flip
ZTE Cymbal
Pantech Breeze
I'd say the Blackberry OS certainly isn't "immune", but much better than Android or iOS.
There is also the Punkt. MP02. It runs on an extremly stripped down Android 8 secured by Blackberry without any Google services.
How can we be sure it is not collecting data?
Just a hunch!
what's your opinion on 5G being able to be weaponized/cancer causing?
Punkt. M02 is the one I've been looking at trying. Still pricy though
They can still get your data on airplane mode and actually even more so. Do your research!

Thank you for all of your fine print reading. Very informative.
2G has been switched off here in Australia.
I currently own no working cell phone (nor land line for that matter) and have no plans on changing this situation.

Librem 5...what do you think of this alternative?
Expensive
I am considering this one. Built tough, and easy to use. First to learn if how long I can use it before the system won't accept it. I will purchase if I can replace the dying battery, which you cannot on Sealed ones. They are throwaway basically.
I’m buying a flip phone soon
I miss my Nokia 3390 Gold. Anyone remember those? They were built like tanks and the battery lasted for a week.
For a different and expensive alternative, the Punkt MP02 is 4G. But also $350.
What about the Nokia smartphones from back in the day, like the symbian phones or even the xpressmusic ones?
I search for MONTH for a dumb phone here in Canada and it's SO hard to find quality in something that works on networks here...

The flavours that Scottie talks about, (for Australia):
2G: 900/1800.
The problem with a dumbphone is no secure messaging. We all need to kickstart a dumbphone with support for proton mail and Signal.
Signal is not secure
@@Mindplay591 its the same technology as WhatsApp isn't it? Military grade. Steve Griffith's of Security Now says its secure.
Darren Lomax If you cant make your server and client for that app, its not secure. Also whatsapp says its encrypted but do you really believe that? If something happens, the goverment have rights to read whatsapp messages. Whatsapp grants it.
No message you send over a provider is secure, none... Like not even an "I" , every messaging on anything over WiFi or a provider is unsecure
Years back before mobile phones took off, sbc(now att) had wanted to make the old pay phones into wireless hubs you could send and receive calls around. Of course the phone only worked around those, similar to modern WiFi solutions. Almost like this but not exactly. techpresident.com/news/25170/new-york-city-payphone-wifi-project-presents-opportunities-and-challenges

For sure I remember that coming up.
SWOM had an idea to run shortwave using the pld lines as a support structure for minimally powerful rf.
Using them like secure hotlines as well as antennae for the old rf handsets. A buddy and I automated many of the lights, stereo, thermostat, etc in hus warehouse home. All based on shortwave repeating at long distances using an older model telescoping antenna handsets. It was pretty neat being across town and recieving a set of clicks that meant the door bell had been rung and being able to speak over the intercom to them! Smart man
Authority can Suck it with Authority ,That sounds better than the complications of today doesn’t it.
I still have my old Nokia 7060. It might be interesting to see if it still works (battery??).
I can’t get anything but WiFi in my house... thought that was good🤦🏻♀️. Still hacked, which my husband just loves 🤬...
Any advice?
Follow Rob Braxman on youtube. He sells degoogled phones but cant keep up with the demand. They are being sold elsewhere if you hunt about
Got my Nokia 8110 4G the other day! :D
I think it's pretty cool that you are able to use a dumbphone. I use a free US Government cell phone from the Lifeline program. Sadly, they don't accept dumbphones. I use it sparingly. I haven't got around to it yet but my model is rootable so I can change the OS and not use Google. I know they record everything. I don't ever say or type anything over this phone I wouldn't say in a church.
Verizon announced that there 3-g was out the door not to G all of their 3-g hotspots or now Nolan void
I like the ones where the keyboard comes out of the side.
